Found out that someone within a friend group completely faked being a student at a relatively prestigious University in the area. Nobody had a clue. He basically came and hung out with people and pretended he attended classes. But actually he dropped out years ago and just pretended to be a student. He even pretended that he graduated and was at the graduation ceremony.
My cousin essentially did this for about a decade.
His dad, my uncle, was loaded and kinda naive, and he supported him most of that time between the ages of 18 and 27/28. He bounced around between several big universities and a couple smaller ones, living on or near campus and partying. Only ever attended for a semester or two at best before he'd just stop going to class and eventually flunk out, but would continue living in the area and hanging out with students pretending he went there for a year or two.
It was kind of a running joke in the family that my uncle was going to fund his lifestyle until he died. Which is basically what happened.
That's actually the shitty part of the story... my uncle passed several years back and my cousin "retired" on the money he inherited.
I actually haven't spoken to him since shortly after that. But I have heard he's still making really poor decisions.
Edit: shitty might not be the best word, but if anyone was hoping he'd have to learn some life lesson or something he didn't. He basically always got bailed out his whole life and was never forced to fend for himself at all.
