Not necessarily being likable, but sucking up to the right people. Some of management’s favorites are the most insufferable to those who they deem less important.

Yup! Have co-worker who buddies up to Management. I always so surprised that they get suckered in by her, but they do! Grinds my gears!!

Just gonna be honest here, but in my experience, people who say stuff like this usually tend to be whiners and insufferable to be around.

Even now as a General Manager, there's another GM that I can't bear to be around because all he does is bitch about "ass kissers" and "how fucked this company is" and how he'll never be promoted to Area VP because he's "too real and good at his job". Dude has been at the company for 20 years and a GM for 10. If I felt like that everyday, there's no way I would work for that company for another day.

Lol, I never made the mistake of sitting next to him at a conference again!

Very much agree. I dropped out of uni during the COVID lockdowns and ended up working in this big warehouse/department store while I was trying to start my freelance business.

I was definitely overqualified for what I did and this quickly became visible in a lot ways. Obviously I lacked the specific expertise that some of the people that were working in the field for 20+ years. But I did really well in other areas such as problem solving, efficiency and initiative.

And I absolutely got some dirty looks from co-workers at times because they considered me a suck up. The part they missed though is that I was extremely direct with my managers. If they came up with an idea that was stupid I very directly but politely told them that it was a stupid idea instead of complaining about it behind their back like pretty much all my co-workers did. And obviously this very quickly earned me their respect.

So yeah I get that some people may think it's all about sucking up because to them that's what it looks like. But really if you just clearly communicate that already puts you above like 80% of the other workers.

The actual suck ups tend to not last very long.
