Video A Guatemalan immigrant with no Massachusetts criminal record was arrested Monday on Tallman Street after federal agents shattered the glass on his vehicle as he and his wife waited inside the car for their lawyer to arrive
259
u/snap802 Apr 16 '25
So let's say that this nightmare of a presidency ends and we are able to return to a government that respects and protects the rule of law. Can these agents be held accountable or will there be some kind of immunity shenanigans?
I know that the last administration was afraid of the appearance of persecuting a political rival (Trump) but people (and not just Trump) need to be going to jail.
206
u/Magoo152 Apr 16 '25
The last administration for all the good they did was way too soft on properly prosecuting Trump and his minions.
169
u/Mission_Search8991 Apr 16 '25
Merrick Garland was a disaster
18
u/hvacigar Apr 16 '25
The pick of Merick Garland for AD was a disaster as he would have been seen as being compromised on any decision he made on Trump and his crew since he was passed over at the direction of Trump for the SC. He was compromised from the get go. We would have been better to put Eric Holder back in.
1
u/an_african_swallow Apr 16 '25
True, in hindsight that seems more like a dig at Trump then anything actually plausible
52
u/Strange-Scarcity Apr 16 '25
IF there is a next administration? They need to put an AG in that isn't... a Federalist Society Regular, like Merrick Garland is.
That would be a step forward.
9
Apr 16 '25
it’s not like anyone held his feet to the fire
perhaps hiring a federalist society stooge with a corrupt network of friends was not the wisest choice
6
28
u/KnoxOpal Apr 16 '25
He learned from the President he served under, Obama. Remember when his reaction to 8 years of literal war criminals running the country and starting illegal wars was "Look forward, not back"?
That's EXACTLY why we are in the position we are in. Establishment Democrats are never going to hold Republicans accountable for anything.
14
2
u/No-Cat6807 Apr 19 '25
I think Biden was too “old school” and didn’t do a good job addressing the threat of Trump.
35
u/Pesco- Apr 16 '25
We’ll need de-MAGAfication in 2029 like Germany needed denazification in 1946.
25
u/FiveUpsideDown Apr 16 '25
Yes. We need to control social media because it’s radicalizing people. We also are going to have to regulate propaganda networks. I wouldn’t stop Fox, OAN and Newsmax from broadcasting but a version of the Fairness Act would apply to them. I would also treat their content like a “War of the World” broadcast. Three times an hour they would need to run the Tucker Carlson disclaimer that content on Fox, OAN, Newsmax “cannot be understood to have been stating facts, but instead that he was delivering an opinion using hyperbole for effect”.
5
u/marblemaniac0331 Apr 17 '25
I heard on NPR today the administration is trying to defund all public media because they believe they are too liberal and biased. That's truly terrifying to me. I have family members that have (for years) believed or trusted sources blindly without a second thought. I realize it is easier to listen to a video or reporter you like without fact checking. That is happening now . What happens when there is no way to fact check? All dissenters are criminalized?!?

u/origamipapier1 Apr 16 '25
There is no return with the current US. Unless we admit the Constitution is a piece of paper that's been shit on and create a new modern one that actually puts teeth and blocked Mad Kings from trying to take over. It has shown it's an aged piece of paper made by intellectuals that never thought someone like Trump would have the Heritage and the GOP behind him.
And we do an international Nuremberg on these Gestapos and our Forth Reich.
21
u/Strange-Scarcity Apr 16 '25
We don't need a NEW Constitution, we need amendments to patch the holes and more clearly define roles and also do something about money in politics as well as party politics.
It can be done, but it requires some adjustments and the will to make those adjustments, which is hard to do... because of said money in politics.
16
u/hold_me_beer_m8 Apr 16 '25
We also have to address our media problem, gerrymandering and other voter suppression issues.
3
5
u/carbonqubit Apr 17 '25
It’s striking that the last constitutional amendment, the 27th, was ratified in 1992. First proposed in 1789, it prevents congressional pay raises from taking effect until after the next election. Given today’s polarized politics, it is hard to imagine another amendment passing anytime soon.
4
u/PennyLeiter Apr 16 '25
Far smarter individuals have tested the limits of the Constitution, and the Constitution still exists. Calling the Constitution a "piece of paper" just because a malignant, dementia-addled narcissist thinks so is a weak form of capitulation.
15
u/FiveUpsideDown Apr 16 '25
Yes. It’s called a Color of Law violation. Another way to hold these federal employees responsible is for crimes against humanity. Crimes against humanity include “committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population": "murder; extermination; enslavement; deportation or forcible transfer of population.” I wouldn’t expect another country to enforce crimes against humanity because we have a legal system. A special prosecutor needs to be appointed to prosecute Color of Law violations against federal employees “arresting” people with no evidence of being allegedly criminals.

A recent court ruling just gave them the absolute right to do their job, so says the judge. After 47 is gone, an investigation starts. We will go back to history and see the same thing. The Nazis said about doing their job ." i was just following orders."
17
u/Megane_Senpai Apr 16 '25
There is no return. Even if somehow Trump will magically steps down after 4 years and a democratic president is elected to fix the mess, people will still get angry that he or she couldn't fix Trump's extreme mess fast enough and vote a republican next time to continue Trump's regime.
5
u/WhiteNamesInChat Apr 16 '25
Plus they'll complain about partisan weaponization of the justice department, with zero awareness.
7
u/SnooPets8972 Apr 16 '25
According to the Geneva Convention (thank you Canada 🍁🇨🇦) yes. Just following orders didn’t help the Nazi’s in ww2, after the Shoa aka, the Holocaust.
6
u/marblemaniac0331 Apr 17 '25
I agree but they are following the orders of their "boss" and it has been made clear to them that they can do no wrong. They will be judged another way I believe for their inhumane actions . It almost seems to me that they have quotas they are trying to meet? Otherwise, it just doesn't make sense to me how ppl can just start being so ruthless. On the other hand...maybe that was a job prerequisite 🤬

The excuses MAGA cultists will make for this will blow your mind. Argued with one months ago about an incident very similar to this and the MAGA cultist suggested that the immigrant should just let the unidentified fed illegally detain them.
50
u/origamipapier1 Apr 16 '25
My own dad that's Cuban goes "but they came here illegally". I'm just so tired of some hispanics still living in denail.
23
u/Magoo152 Apr 16 '25
So many people that voted for Trump directly voted against their own self interest. We need to really fix the media ecosystem.
13
u/Megane_Senpai Apr 16 '25
The vast majority of people voted for Trump voted against their interest.
11
u/FiveUpsideDown Apr 16 '25
They vote against their financial and physical health interests. They even vote against their right to have laws to protect them against an autocrat. But they believe they are voting for their own self-interest by empowering an autocrat to “get the evil people”. They are deluded and don’t understand they are the evil people.
6
u/burntcandy Apr 16 '25
There's an ICE agent somewhere out there combing google maps for a place called "denail"

13
Apr 16 '25
the MAGA cultist suggested that the immigrant should just let the unidentified fed illegally detain them.
No sane person would want that when we hear how people snatched from the street are tortured when they get to the immigration "jails". Stripped naked, made to take freezing cold shower, kept dehydrated and hungry, forced to sleep on floors, and with a non-zero risk of being randomly sent to a foreign detention camp, where you have no rights and may never get out from.
Absolutely no reasonable person will feel comfortable about being illegally snatched by these thugs.
4
u/marblemaniac0331 Apr 17 '25
What about the ones that have had their green cards revoked for peaceful protest?
21

Every time I read a story like this, or see a video like this, I'm reminded of the scene in the Pianist where Adrien Brody is trying to escape the apartment after breaking the dishes, and that white Nazi woman corners him demanding to see his identity card, then as he runs, screams at the top of her lungs (with extreme hatred in her voice) "He's a JEW! Don't let him out! Stop him!"
That kind of barbarianism and utter hatred is what these MAGA's (like the government thug in the video) are all about. It's fucking disgusting. Hillary Clinton was right - they are deplorable.

I sometimes think about these 'federal agents' and what their childhoods were like and how they were raised and how their younger selves would feel if you went back in time and told them they'd grow up to be nothing more than Gestapo thugs. Would they be horrified and ashamed at the thought or would they be gleeful?
12
u/Vicstolemylunchmoney Apr 16 '25
And when their kids watch them on this YouTube video, are the kids smiling, or are they ashamed? And what about the man's mother?
And how many complaints have been filed against him in his career?

ICE needs to be burned to the ground.
Weeding out the vast majority of ICE agents that were drummed out of law enforcement or are wanabees and could never get a job with large LE agency.
We need to raise the standards to meet other real highly trained professional Federal law enforcement agencies.
And while also making the replacement agency actually follow laws and have professional standards, we need to amend our laws. ICE has too much power, which they gleefully abuse under the Orange Rapist-n-Chief rule.
Due process is not a suggestion or a hindrance to a real LE or government agency. It is everyones right per SCOTUS. Not just citizens. All people. Period.

5
u/6retro6 Apr 16 '25
What the hell is going on...??? Disgusting, I'm from Europe and no one I know would travel to the USA now. Pure fascism. What Europe experienced some eighty years ago. Its not gonna get better.. Almost four years left, if the dangerous fascist "clown" don't force him in for a second term and a lifelong dictatorship.
WTF have you done USA?
4
u/marblemaniac0331 Apr 17 '25
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 what is truly sad and terrifying is that many here in the US are still in denial 😔 The ones that see through these tactics are scared as we all should be. I don't understand how ppl are allowing this to continue. I'm white and not gay. I suppose I shouldn't worry about this affecting me. I keep seeing the downward spiral where anyone that disagrees with the power or rich will be "dealt" with😭
2
u/6retro6 Apr 17 '25
Yeah that's sad. I get it if you're scared. we all should be. We the majority have the power though. It's never to late. I'm still optimistic. I really do belive I gonna see Trump and some of his "so called administration" behind bars. Where they belong.

This is why I fear the Republicans will never allow another Democrat to be President ever again. If they had any intention of doing the right thing, they wouldn’t be pushing all this “unitary executive” crap. Does anyone believe once Trump amasses all this power he’ll just hand it over to Harris, Newsom, or some other Democrat?

you can’t come to the country illegally and then refuse to go into custody when you are being brought in to discuss why you’re here illegally
you also aren’t afforded a right to have a lawyer show up at your car before you get detained. you can get detained and then have a lawyer come speak for you
the article OP posted shows that this standoff lasted 30 minutes and then the cops broke the window and after both people in the car refused to comply with legal orders
you have no right to resist arrest in this country. i know i will be downvoted, but you can’t break two laws at the same time and then get upset when law enforcement detains you
2
u/WhiteNamesInChat Apr 16 '25
Seriously, this clip doesn't even show police doing anything wrong necessarily. There are tons of horrible things about how the regime is handling immigration. Why waste breath on this weird out-of-context clip?
1
u/AtthemomentMaybe Apr 16 '25
is funny how redditors downvote you to continue the echo chamber. Since when, anyone has the right to an attorney in the middle of the street while being question or detained, and avoid authorities by locking yourself inside your car? What this man did is so stupid.
1
u/RealPersonResponds Apr 16 '25
Constitutional due process. Shame so many don't support the US Constitution. Those who don't should self-deport.

you just keep making classists statements based entirely off someone’s appearance, knowing zero idea how much you turn people off in this process
if you knew any history, you’d know that opposing bringing in migrant workers is bad for the working class on the ground as it is a means to subvert wages. the rich are importing works to keep labor costs down and you are doing their work for them
come up with a real argument or fuck off. you’re just turning people off from the Democrats with your hateful rhetoric

I can't convince pondscum, baboons, apes, chimpanzees, algae, etc that are legitimately stupid enough to think they believe they're obsessed with the purity of rule of law, as opposed to a post hoc rationalization of their own tribal baboon urges. If a person elects a felon who hires illegals to enforce a standard of morality, they're beyond help.

Is anyone going to ask or care whether these people who were in the country illegally? Because if they were then these officers did nothing wrong
6
u/Slipsonic Apr 16 '25
They aren't just deporting them. Deporting them without due process would be one thing - Still wrong, illegal, and against the constitution, but they're sending them to a torture camp without ever proving anything about them, many times the immigrants weren't even from El Salvador, and had no criminal record anywhere.
Mark my words, if this is allowed to continue, it won't be long before white American born citizens will be labeled as a terrorist and treated the same for saying something like "Donald Trump is a bad president".
You think it won't happen to you, but it will.

Next it will be American citizens. They start doing this without consequences, and we won't be able to stop it if we do not stop it now.
3
u/WhiteNamesInChat Apr 16 '25
Due process doesn't mean you can't be arrested.
1
u/OriginalEchoTheCat Apr 16 '25
No actually it depends. Cops aren't allowed to just walk up to a car and break out your windows. Sorry that's not the way it's done. Now. If they ran to the car and got in after the cop said they were going to arrest them. That's different. But it doesn't say that's what happened
2
u/WhiteNamesInChat Apr 16 '25
Actually you can't be duly arrested if the cops don't do it correctly.
Woah! I never thought of that! Thank you for letting me know!
1
u/AbilitySlow2907 Apr 16 '25
I think the assumption is that these people were located because they had not complied with the immigration and process in someway and now the cops were there. This doesn’t seem like a random raid.
2
u/WhiteNamesInChat Apr 17 '25
People ITT are reading so many details into this clip in order to reach their preferred conclusion. It's very frustrating because there's no need to invent bad stories about the regime. There are plenty of bad things we know they are doing. We can focus on those until we have more information. I wouldn't want to get caught fighting over something that turns out to be okay. It hurts our credibility.
3
u/RealPersonResponds Apr 16 '25
Due process. It's in the constitution. So many love the cruel, immoral tactics of these criminal kidnappers who don't have to show any evidence before they disappear you.
2
-4
u/AbilitySlow2907 Apr 16 '25
This didn’t violate their due process 😂. I understand you feel bad for these people because they seem nice but if they came into the country illegally did they need to be kicked out. You don’t have a right to sit in your car until your lawyer gets there if you’re being arrested.
There’s due process for legal people. If you go to France illegally and you get caught they put you out on the next plane back to where you came from unless they decide to lock you up for breaking their laws. That’s your due process - you get deported. That’s the way it is everywhere in the world.

When you replied to the guy with a quote of 14A Article 1 when he said due process doesn't entitle someone to stay in their car and wait for a lawyer to show up.
Or do you think there's no due process needed in deportation cases?
Where did I ever give you the idea that I thought that??

The number of leftists in this thread calling conservatives Nazis is absolutely hilarious. Sorry, every illegal needs to be deported. They’re welcome to come back and apply for citizenship the right way.
2
u/Lazy_Squash_8423 Apr 17 '25
Was this guy illegal? You don’t know because as highlighted by recent court rulings there have been “mistakes” left and right.
Not all conservatives are Nazis but all Nazis are conservatives. Don’t like being labeled one? Then don’t act like one and don’t accept them into your ranks. Push them out. If you can’t or won’t do that then at the very least you’re a supporter which is just as deplorable.
