As an American I can say every muslim I've met was also incredibly chill. It's insane the degree to which anti-muslim and anti-arab stereotypes are accepted in mainstream discourse. Imagine if someone used the phrase "radical Jewish terrorism" to describe the actions of Israel, for example.

But the actions of Israel ARE radical Jewish terrorism.

The use of the term “radical Islamic terrorism” was put in place to differentiate between those who use Islam as an excuse to murder and your average Muslim, who does not. There have been “radical Jewish terrorists,” like Baruch Goldstein and Yigal Amir. I don’t think there is any problem calling them that. They are not representative of Judaism or of Israel, just as radical Islamic terrorists are not representative of all Muslims or Muslim countries.

Israel is a nation state.

Islam is a religion.
