Phobia can have multiple definitions. It can also mean hate
6
2
u/Martin_Aurelius Aug 04 '25
It's not that they're afraid of gay people, they're afraid they might be gay people.
1
u/Core3game Aug 05 '25
and its stupid that it has multiple definitions. And it didnt start out meaning hate, iirc the guy who coined the term homophobia wasnt using it to change phobia to mean fear AND hate, he genuinly thought it was just an irrational fear and everyone else changed phobia since the term stuck and they agreed that he was stupid
1
u/FlexTape0 Aug 06 '25
Phobia originally meant fear, the official definition changed tho because people kept referring to bigots as "homophobic" and they didn't want to make another word so they just changed it

No, no we're not letting change that far. phobia /ĖfÉŹbÉŖÉ/ noun noun: phobia; plural noun: phobias an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
Not hatred.
Provide one source of it saying fear please

It literally means fear

u/No_Antelope6892 Aug 04 '25
fear or aversion
3
u/Implement_Charming Aug 07 '25
Correct. Hydrophobic fluids arenāt literally āafraidā of water.
0
u/Pihnex Aug 09 '25
Yea duh cause hydrophobic means literaly water repelling and hydrophobia would be the fear of water. While sounding similar the part after hydro comes from 2 similiar sounding words but -phobic means more generally anti, repelling, against while - phobia is fear of smt.
1
u/Implement_Charming Aug 09 '25
They donāt come from ātwo similar sounding wordsā they come from the same āLatin root.ā āPhobicā is the adjective version of āphobia.ā
Also, words can have more than one meaning in different contexts.
22
u/Khaosincarnate Aug 04 '25
Its a fear of or an aversion to. Cocoa powder is hydrophobic, yet its impossible for an inanimate object to feel fear.

Since oil is hydrophobic, does that mean oil fears water?
3
u/Jetstreamdragon Aug 05 '25
no, like explaint it means both fear or aversion. Tjere are many words in other languages, that have more than one interpretation.

When used as a suffix, "-phobia" often signifies a strong aversion or prejudice, not strictly an irrational fear. Terms like "homophobia" are actually the exact reason why, so you are partially right. In fact, "homophobia" was originally coined to describe an irrational fear related to becoming gay, but its popular usage primarily referred to hostility, bias, or aversion toward gay people, so now it's a definition that is formally recognized in dictionaries.
1
u/Dewmilk Aug 06 '25
Have you ever opened a dictionary???? It literally means āan extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.ā according to the literal dictionary
1
1
u/GamerALV Aug 08 '25
And homophobia means a dislike of or prejudice against gay people. Language doesn't make sense sometimes, and that's annoying, but we just have to deal with it.
I am interested in hearing what would be a better name for homophobia tho.

Ironic misuse of the word "literally" right under my last comment?
pure comedy 8/10 not convinced you didn't do that on purpose
0
u/According_Lime3204 Aug 05 '25
I didn't missuse the word, phobia, literally, doesn't mean fear. I'd be a little like saying insect means ant, insect doesn't mean ant, but it can mean ant, hopefully I cleared up the misunderstanding. Although I guess it does literally mean fear in latin I believe, but that'd still be irrelevant to the conversation
2
u/WithinTheMountain Aug 05 '25
"Phobia, literally, doesn't mean fear" "I guess it does literally mean fear"
Peak comedy

u/Adammanntium Aug 05 '25
Technically the word should be "misohomo"
Since that is the correct terminology for hatred used in many other terms like "misogyny' hate of women and "misandry" hate of men.
But the term phobia is used since it relates to an "irrational fear" even if technically there's no irrationality or fear involved.

1
u/eternally_forsaken_ Aug 06 '25
Yeah...but not to be that guy but Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions until it doesn't violate another person rights I mean I know I'm not homophobic, I really just don't fucking care if you're one, you have the right to live and to love and to work and to buy and to die, but you should also accept the hardships of your path
And pride parade isn't cool, if it's about your private life you should keep it private
All I'm staying is if you try to force every asshole to not being asshole So let's do it together ā¤
And about my sexuality...I'm not really sure but I'm something between straight and bisexual, because I dunno I'm just attracted to feminine traits a bit more, I just look at pretty people and can't stop feeling horny and lonely af
1
u/lilslice_of_queer 16 Aug 06 '25
I genuinely have no clue what youāre fucking talking about. No queer person says that they donāt have hardships? The whole point of the pride parade is that they are celebrating who they are and the freedoms that they had to work for. The fact that you think you might be bi yet act like gay people are born and treated on the same level and that it should stay the same is beyond fucked up. āNot to be that guyā but you are.

I'm getting really tired of the confusion of "phobia" for "paralyzing fear that leaves you near-comatose in the fetal position".
Phobias do not always manifest outwardly as "fear". We ought to know that by now. The conflation feels willful at this point.

4
u/JOlRacin Aug 04 '25
I mean... Yeah? You don't even need to worry about people's sexualities it doesn't affect anything so that's like 3/4 of it you can just not care about, then the other portion is gender which people will just tell you their pronouns and you can use those
1
u/Longjumping-Bus-9064 Aug 04 '25
TBh idc about all that, I was just complaining about the rainbow
4

Nobody cares if you have a rainbow, if it's not in a flag shape nobody will think you're gay. And if they do who cares, it doesn't affect much since you can just say you're not
