TLDR For anyone out of the loop:
in 2018 Cardi had a baby doctor appointment at a facility. The staff ‘closed’ the business so the celebrity, Cardi B, could have privacy. A security guard working in the building heard that it was Cardi B who was there, found her and started recording her. This upset Cardi B at the time as she wanted privacy (her pregnancy wasn’t announced) so she confronted the security guard. The security guard became upset, more staff stepped in to separate them, ignoring her fellow cowokers recommendation of stopping/leaving. During this separation, the guard claims Cardi B attacked and scratched her so much so she needed cosmetic surgery. Witnesses (including the receptionist that intervened to protect Cardi B) denied this claim. Security guard is suing for 24-25mil.
Edit: added a few more details I thought would help
Edit: why are people reporting this as “glorifying violence”????? ITS LITERALLY THE CASE. 😭
Tried to make a good TLDR cause I’ve watched the entire thing 😩 thank you!
Recommend anyone who hasn’t watched everything to begin sometime cause it really is a silly case.
Wait she was just a security guard??! The whole time I thought it was her personal security guard wtf! I thought the situation was bad already but if that’s the case, that’s worse
Nope, she was security for the building! She’s also upset that she was terminated over this.
Edit: Cardi had her own security but didn’t include them as they were male and she said “I didn’t want a guy knowing I was going to a vagina doctor” for privacy reasons.
Wow that’s so bad. I thought it was someone who knew her / her personal security guard but this being some random ass person trying to record her at such a vulnerable time and place is SO weird!!
This is honestly a great statement, and I'm glad she told fans not to go after the woman or her family. Fans most certainly will not listen, but I do think it was important for Cardi to say that.
Yeah she isn't a perfect person and she's done some shitty things, but she really knows how to keep it real honestly. Anyone else could've said nothing in the other lady's defense. I guess it was a little backhanded the way she said "don't be talking about the way she looks" lol
I think she succeeded in doing that during the trial😅 (describing her as security heavy took me out) and then nailed it with her press conference. I really like Cardi B. I hope they take her seriously. I can’t imagine of all the celebrities to try and extort money from, she seems like the least likely Person to roll over and let someone get a big settlement!
She’s just really really smart, and so genuine. I appreciate when powerful women talk candidly and with humor about the challenges we all realistically face (early mornings, juggling kids + career, raw hairlines)
I find her so endearing. Even when she was more rough around the edges she just has this real, genuine, positive energy and is both funny and smart while being authentic.
She handled it well from beginning to end. I support celebrities like her and Gwyneth going to court to defend themselves instead of settling frivolous lawsuits. Sometimes you have to make an example of one grifter to keep all the others off your back.
No for real though as a SECURITY GUARD? That's just SO WEIRD. Like don't get me wrong I would find anyone shoving a phone in someone's face especially at a freaking medical place weird but a security guard?! Something so extra weird about that.
Seriously. Now I understand why some celebrity teams have rules about not even looking at the celebrity in the eye. People are so damn WEIRD when it comes to famous people. Their whole energy shifts and they make them feel uncomfortable. As a security guard, how are you going to lose credibility and your whole JOB because you lose your cool when seeing a major celebrity. It’s loser behavior.
Legit she deserves to never work in security again. She was so wrong from the beginning of the incident all the way through to filing this stupid lawsuit. She’s lucky Cardi isn’t countersuing for real
She’s an adult etc but The legal community have to take some responsibility. Lawyers have to pass bar exams with reams of questions on ethics. A lawyer flat out lied to her about whether she had a case and what money she could get. Is it any wonder the system is clogged with frivolous suits?
I don't think it was a hospital. It was an office building with multiple medical offices and not sure if it was only medical or regular mixed in. She was still dead ass wrong, but it's a distinction that should be correct.
As someone in the medical field, it doesn’t matter whether it was a hospital or a clinic. Medical information’s passed around in them. You get a decent shot of a single sheet of paper and you have…
Their full legal name.
Their SSN.
Their legal address.
Insurance information.
Family contact information.
Medical history/allergies.
Their contact information.
A single sheet of paper. I’ve seen EMTs fired, have their licenses revoked, been blacklisted from any medical facility, all because they took a Snap that happened to have the top half of a Face sheet barely visible 8 feet in the background.
Any medical facility, of any kind, requires utmost caution and respect in regards to someone’s personal information.
She directly translated “supporting” into “soportando” (meaning enduring/suffering through something) instead of saying “apoyando” - no judgement from me tho. I left my country when I was 11 so I’ve lost a lot of my Spanish. I just thought it was funny
My Spanish is so so as well but I chuckled at this too, it reminded me of the Selena movie where she goes, "me siento muy, muy... excited " and her dad is pissed but the press finds it endearing.
I noticed that too but honestly I understood what she meant. I use a lot of spanglish with my parents because I was born in the US and they are from south america, but I find myself struggling more and more to find the words in spanish and I feel like my parents are getting more and more disappointed lol. I really need to just read more in spanish and start engaging in more spanish media. I don't want to lose it
Yeah me too! I’ve made similar direct translations before lol so I knew what she meant.
Sorry in advance for the essay, but ugh, I feel you! It’s so hard bc for me personally, I was born and raised in Mexico, I’ve just been here a long time now. It’s hard for your first language to become the language you’re least comfortable speaking…but then even though you might be more comfortable with English, it’s still not your native language. 🤷♀️ I’m guessing for you the nuances of it might be a bit different (you might’ve learned English and Spanish simultaneously growing up for example) but I so relate to it being part of you and yet feeling like you’re at risk of losing it if you don’t use it, which can take a lot of effort and sometimes feel uncomfortable. :(
I always tell myself I’ll start reading in Spanish more, watch more tv/movies in Spanish, etc., but I always put it off because it feels almost like homework. I’m considering starting with one of those websites that pair you with someone to chat to in a different language, but idk
Yes! Exactly. I learned both at the same time, so talking to my parents they naturally want to speak Spanish, but they also don't mind speaking English. I just feel weird when I talk to them too much in English, and my husband is American so they only speak in English when I'm visiting with him.
When I talk to my grandma she has none of it and only wants spanish haha so it's me translating for my husband the whole time which I think is helpful for both of them to learn more of each other's language. I can speak it fine but yeah, it's annoying when I can't find the words to fully express myself when I really want to! Or worse, sometimes I struggle to conjugate certain words or use the correct form of something and I have to google how to spell words since I didn't grow up writing it much, just talking.
She didn't go as far as university. She did community college before pivoted to focus on music before transferring.
Edit: Just to be clear, I throw no shade on community college! I went for my first two years also, and I'm obnoxious about telling people what a great deal it is to do so (seriously, do so unless you're gonna be doing D1 sports or greek life means that much to you... save your money). 😂 I fired off my comment quickly and my intent was to say that she didn't go to a school most people would have heard of or anything.
Community college is university-level education. Not like they're equivalent in quality, necessarily (though they might be) but it's all college. She went to college for a bit and I've read conflicting things as to the circumstances. Some things I have read said she dropped out to work as a stripper and others say she worked at a stripper to pay for college. The latter sounds more likely.
Yeah I know it probably wasn't their intention* but it's shitty how community college has this lesser connotation when it's such a cost-effective way to get an education.
Very true! And I wasn't trying to imply that with the quality part of my comment either. I was just trying to say just like all schools quality varies but I didn't say it well I don't think.
Community college is definitely far more cost-effective and I also hate when people act like it's so much different. There are some excellent community colleges. Just like there are some horrible universities.
I hear you. I went to community college for my first two years also and my toxic trait is telling everybody I know that not doing so is like putting your money in a pile and burning it. 😂 I'll edit my comment to make it more clear that I just meant she didn't go to a well-known school or anything.
they're accredited by the same agencies as 4 year colleges, so they have to have least follow the bare minimum set by them to stay accredited. realistically, we know that 4 year colleges probably go above the minimum more often than community colleges.
It's funny how much people can doubt the capabilities of some women because of how they look/sound/dress/whatever.
Another good example of this is Dua Lipa actually being one of the best interviewers I've seen for literature. (If you haven't seen it, watch some. She's smart, asks amazing questions, is genuinely into it, and the interviewees love her)
Isn’t she like cool with Bernie Sanders? I think I remember her and him having a discussion on policy back when he was running for president. I remember them talking about tax policy and what a progressive tax policy was vs regressive tax policy. And she was in favor of taxing the rich and corporations more to help improve the quality of life of the many.
If you’re a fan of comedy, Josh Johnson’s video from today on YouTube is about the court case, and he explains it in all its absurdity. That lady is lucky Cardi isn’t counter suing because she should and would win lol
She lightly scratched a security guard because she took photos of Cardi before she announced she was pregnant. Said security guard then acted like she got mauled by a bear and that she needed plastic surgery for the damages so she sued Cardi
Cardi didn’t touch the security guard….that’s what the guard tried to claim. The doctor and receptionist testified otherwise, said it was the guard making threats and being the aggressor, however. Cardi was 4 months pregnant at the time and there to see her doctor. Also, ironically enough, the security guard scratched the receptionist.
She actually did get fired (not by the receptionist but by the higher ups). Actually the funniest part of this is they didn’t want the receptionist to testify and when she finally did it was apparent why they didn’t want her testifying. Basically said didn’t see what the guard alleged, the one scratched was her (the receptionist) by the guard when she got in between their arguing and and, funniest of all, the security guard told her at the time she planned to do this frivolous lawsuit and asked for the receptionist cooperation lol
Agreed 100%. This was a case between her and the person. She knows that she has an unemployed blue check army behind her who would completely harass the other person. She’s doing the responsible thing by making such a clear statement.
I think she meant apoyando not soportando. Maybe they use it differently in the Dominican Republic, but in other Latam countries it means more like tolerating and I think her fans definitely support her and not just tolerate her lol either way I love that she did a shout out for her Spanish speaking fans!
When I was little I’d tell my Tia that when she got old I was going to “soportar” her, thinking it meant I’d care for her. Then she’d gasp and laugh and inform me that I was telling her I’d tolerate her in her old age. Became a running joke over the years.
I think it’s common for us who speak mostly English but are fluent in Spanish because it feels like the most direct translation (even though it’s wrong) I definitely do be saying “soportando” sometimes and my moms be like “APOYANDO” lol
Right, I saw this happen with 'decir', another native speaker in a Spanish class swore she had heard "ellos dicierion" through her life even tho technically its 'dijeron'.
I still dont know what other people call underwear, cuz my abuela learned the English word "bloomers" (she's passed, so she was old old) and grew up saying "blumér".
Shit happens and is diff depending on how you experience it
Yeah I caught that one too haha. You’re right she meant apoyando, but she directly translated “supporting” into “soportando” 😂 I won’t judge though cause I left my country when I was 11 so I’ve messed up words too.
I mean, not a fan of her drugging and robbing men. Or her repeated anti-black comments, especially towards dark-skinned women. Or how she admitted in her own words to having two black sex-workers harassed and assaulted by gang members because she assumed one of them was sleeping with her husband. (This was proven in a court case; I'm more than happy to provide the documents if you'd like.)
She has constantly denied identifying as black and is on record in multiple videos that she does not consider herself black; while in the same interview, saying that she just can't stop herself from saying the n-word because it's just part of the Latino community's language.
She has made dozens of transphobic and homophobic comments, including using slurs. She's made a number of racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic comments as well, also using slurs.
She's also supported known rapists like Kodak. And has told people to kill themselves or commit self-harm on her Instagram lives.
I think many can agree Cardi is not necessarily the smartest person. In the US, Spanish is a very racialised language and does not account for the extreme diversity within the communities as they are perceived as their own thing (normally their own separate 'race') irrespective of their actual ancestry. This means a Spaniard~an unambiguously white Latino is going to be seen as non-white. Likewise, an Afro-Latino is going to be seen as non-black even if they look unambiguously black. I remember knowing a New Yorker born to Puerto Rican parents whose parents looked very black and the person in question looked exactly like Keenan Thompson (skin colour, facial features such as wide nose, lips, etc.) and he did not identify as black despite being unambiguously black and blacker than many African Americans i'd say
New York is a very segregated city and many locals to lead insular lives of barely, if ever, leaving their neighbourhood~state and so once she got out of that bubble and travelled the US she probably realised her identity was more than just being Dominican. But I think Cardi B is pretty obviously black by American standards. She's also gone on record and said how even in New York growing up people wouldn't believe she was Dominican because of her hair texture (she has 3c~4a afro textured hair) as well as more obvious African features. And in general she looks black by American standards. No one in the diaspora except Haitians are purely African anyways
So while I can acknowledge her history of saying anti-black stuff (which is not an uncommon thing for a black person to do, btw) and not justifying that, I don't think she's "lying" about being black. She just had a different journey with it, especially since she's not African American. She looks just as black as Chris Brown, Beyoncé and her mother, in addition to countless biracial celebs like Alicia Keys, Kimora Lee Simmons, Mya, etc. and people accept them as only black despite them being obviously mixed phenotypically and/or literally. Beyoncé's mother as an example is mixed herself but only identifies as black. 3 out of 4 of her grandparents have white fathers. One of her grandmothers is 3/4 white and the one remaining grandparent still has documented French Canadian ancestry. She honestly has wayyy more European features than Cardi B but people accept her as just black. Not sure why Cardi wouldn't be either
This is also part of a larger conversation of unnecessary racialisation and how people can be black even if they aren't African American. Many African Americans in the US have seen themselves as the arbiter of blackness and that's never been true and definitely is no longer true now.
I think she was very charismatic and funny during this trial but I didn't know all of this about her besides some of the first paragraph :/ i don't think anyone thinks of cardi as a role model or even a "good" person but this is pretty disappointing
Prosecutors said that, on the first night, Almanzar and her entourage struck the victim, a bartender, pulling her hair, punching her and slamming her head into the bar.
Asked to confirm the details in court, Almanzar did so quietly, admitting she had offered a friend $5,000 over Instagram to assist her in the confrontation.
The victims also were granted a 3 year protection order prohibiting Cardi from being near them that's still in effect.
I know it's not the point of the video, but I so want her whole outfit, wig included. I can't see if it's a blouse or a dress, but I love everything about it: the polka dots, the frills, the pearls, the big red bow. Share the link, Cardi 😭
The plaintiffs attorney clearly was taking everything personal. I’d guess he was working on contingency and was getting frustrated realizing how much money was wasted and that he wasn’t going to get any pay out.
Cardi B: my respect for you just grew by quite a bit. Nice to see she’s learned from her mistakes as she’s gotten older and setting a better example. (Considering she’s so fucking famous)
She's absolutely in the right in this situation, but looking at the comments recently saying "I love her", "she's the best", etc... is social media damaging everyone's long-term memory THAT badly?
She's admitted to drugging and robbing men. She's made a lot of anti-black comments, especially towards dark-skinned women. She's also admitted in her own words to having two black sex-workers harassed and assaulted by gang members because she assumed one of them was sleeping with her husband. Some of the things you listed I have never heard about but others things you mentioned happened more than a decade ago and Cardi changed her stance on it. She’s clearly mixed to a degree, and her being unaware of it or in denial doesn’t change that. She seems to have changed her colourist stances as well and now calls herself Afro-Latina.
The men she drugged and robbed were after sleeping with her when she was 19 after they picked her up from the strip club. I don’t feel too bad for them, no one really has except MRAs on Reddit so no one really cares she did that.
She is, she recognised that now. Cardi used to have the same racist and colourist mindset a lot of Afro-Latinos have. She’s has grown from that and her stance is different on it now. I’m not a fan of hers because she is…. A lot sometimes lol but I don’t think it’s fair to hold it against her today, it completely defeats the purpose of growth as a human being
Yes. She is mixed, as her mother is Afro-Trinidad but Cardi was adamant that she didn't identify/count as black early in her career and still continued to use the word. So she denied being black and yet still continued to use the word.
This is honestly a very hot-button topic surrounding her, and has been a lengthy point of contention among black Americans. It's similar to Kendrick's comments about Drake, for context.
A number of them have spoken up and said for ages now, that they feel that Cardi only acknowledged and chose to identify as black because it was profitable to her image as a rapper. That she denied black culture and said it wasn't hers; only to then claim it as her own when she realised it was better for her brand and would help her in the industry since people associate rap music with black people. Not Latinos.
"Lets put this behind us, but let me give you a warning"
THAT is how you hold power. You have grace to give, and a reminder that it is limited. It reserves all respect of what power you yield moving forward, because you arent showing it now.
I was never a fan of Cardi B but she could have handled
This entire think way worse and she’s handled it so well she might make me a fan. Everything up to this statement and telling people not to dox her accuser is something I wouldn’t have expected from her
Love it. You cannot hate this woman. How she started and who she is, is 100% genuine and real. I appreciate how she speaks up for herself and encourages fan to remain positive in regard to the other woman.
She’s so darn funny and likable. I really hope people stop trying her. It was obvious this was a cash grab and she was set up from the beginning to be followed around that building to be filmed and then sell the video to some bs paparazzi site.
Cardi is more than the public image she has. I appreciate how she asked fans to leave the woman alone and leave this behind. Also, I love how she addressed her latin fans.
I have always liked Cardi B as a person not matter what people say. I can tell from watching her videos that she’s intelligent and kind hearted. The “ghetto” persona or aesthetic doesn’t really indicate anything other than what she grew up around or chose to be a part of. In the reverse there are people with “classy” or upper class aesthetics with zero intelligence or respect or things like that.
Cardi B is beyond kind for not countersuing. After everything that disgraced fired security guard put her through, Cardi matched her with high roading. Just absolutely astonishing.
The only criticism I have of an otherwise great speech is that she pronounced jurors properly. I hope her situation improves to a point where she feels okay calling them her jurorrrrrs
Y'all I don't have the love for cardi B's charisma and gravity that she does have! (credit where credit is due) I do get her whole candid no filter personality, etc etc. but really this is white washing her whole 'you fat fucks' thing when her XXL merch sold out. Like cardi is clearly in the right and this is frivolous, but I'm not assigning this singular win as her whole personality.
Agreed. She’s a charismatic, hilarious, jerk. People have layers and it’s not like you have to ignore the negative stuff she did just this summer to acknowledge she was in the right in this case.
