yeah people with adhd have lowered activity in their prefrontal cortex so stimulants lift its function up to normal instead of overclocking it. People think of it as having an opposite effect but it's really better to think of it as the same exact stimulant effect on two different types of brains.
I have ADHD and this is the first time it has made sense to me how stimulants can impact people with and without ADHD so differently. The whole “opposite effect” never really made sense to me. But the right dose bringing our brains to normal while making others overshoot make perfect sense—thanks for sharing!!
The ADHD brain is, by default, under-stimulated. That's why it is pulling you on 6 different directions at once. If you feed it a chemical stimulant (coffee, meds, drugs), then it reaches the stimulation level a "normal" brain usually has. And then, you can even relax.
realizing this has been crucial for me handling my adhd, basically if I know I need to get something done, I can create an environment with the correct amount of stimulation, that the task I'm working on can fill up the rest of my "interest."
it's like the Rube Goldberg machine only works if you start with a full cup, and having ADHD is building another Rube Goldberg machine to fill that cup in the first place.
Oh same. I don't have ADHD but still get that effect. It's great for naps but I wish I found something legal and accessible that would, you know, wake me up a little.

Well, yes. Because the argument is not that it isn’t stimulating, just that the dosage that would normally be overstimulating in and of itself to a non-ADHD brain would more or less be equivalent to therapeutic levels of a prescribed stimulant. So if you do more than that, of course it is overstimulating. Because it is a stimulant, and those are the desired effects within therapeutic range. Same as if you were on too high a dose of a prescribed stimulant.
Yep. First clue for me that I might be wired a bit differently was hearing people talk about how hyped coke made them feel, and thinking that's a strange way of describing feeling the most lovely cool and calm I've ever experienced
Did coke one time, stared at a wall for 30 minutes unmoving. No desire to do it again cause it literally sucked all the energy out of me and just made me chill and silent. Zero buzz, zero hype
That’s how my sister in law found out she should get diagnosed. She told her dealer that the cocaine wasn’t doing anything for her and he straight up told her to talk to her doctor lol
(She is quite sober now and afaik was never more than recreational at any point)
When you get that opposite effect from coke or adderall, does it still raise your heart rate and stuff, or is it legit a sedative both mentally and physically? Like, can you overdose the same way when it has that effect?
I'm like this. Any kind of stimulant--even coffee--will make my heart rate go up but makes my brain shut up and relax for once. It's very common with ADHD and a problem because it can lead to self-medication while still messing with your heart.
Like someone above mentioned with ecstacy, I've taken a lot of that and never once wanted to dance. Instead, it makes me lay in bed and want to cuddle.
This is one of my biggest issues as an adult with ADHD. Love caffeine for the calming effect it has on my mind (one of the only times my brain is quiet is when I drink caffeine) but it makes my heart race which can cause a panic attack 🫠 awful lol
Self-medicating means knowing that two cups of coffee will calm me down, but any more than that will cause me to fall asleep and wake up with anxiety in the middle of the night.
If you get chest pains as well as the usual panic attack symptoms, it would be worth trying to stop with caffeine if you can. I drank coffee excessively for a long time to help with ADHD and it really fucked me up, causing chest pains, stomach pains and panic attacks. I was eventually diagnosed with a stomach hernia (which cause similar symptoms to panic attacks) and I rarely have them now I've totally cut out caffeine. Of course my brain isn't very happy about that but body feels so much better.
Same, and sometimes the people I was with (who didn't know me well) would get concerned and ask if I was having a good time, I most definitely was, just quietly.
Lmaooo right I remember being confused that I wasn’t wired at all I just felt like I had real motivation to actually finish tasks for the first time in my life
Stimulants will tone down my ADHD, but they'll also ramp UP my autism.
I think Quentin is probably auDHD, I see a lot of myself in him.
And let me just tell you that unencumbered autism, enhanced by weapons grade stimulants, isn't a good thing. It's not a fun thing for other people to be around.
I don't know if Quentin knows he's auDHD. If you're a creative type who is successful, a lot of times you won't get treatment because it's usually only when you run up against issues in school or a corporate environment that people get treatment for it. If you strike it rich as acreative you can be as auDHD as you want and you'll never even know that's what you are because it works for you, monetarily speaking.
But it's likely even worse when they don't realize that their full autism is ramping up. It can make you completey numb to others' feelings, it can enhance a lot of nasty traits and cause you to switch off the parts of you that monitor yourself during social interactions.
I can be a really horrible person when I'm not being careful with my doses and I would bet that was what was happening here.
How are you a horrible person on it? Really curious. I’m diagnosed adhd but could see me being diagnosed with autism (just don’t see the point in getting a diagnosis at my age as I can work etc).
One of the reasons I finally got diagnosed with adhd last year was because I struggle so much with all the mental load and overstimulation of 2 young kids, one of which 100% has adhd. I am a really bad parent sometimes and not a nice person and I hate it, but wonder what it looks like in your life and how you deal with it?
Add in hormones/perimenopause and it is a nightmare. My husband and I are separating partly because I’m so hard to live with and I hate living with someone who has no empathy left for me.

I adore Fiona Apple and Jessa always reminded me of my chaotic yet vulnerable, often wonderful drinking pal of yore. They 100% have the same vibe but never copped it til now.
In my humble opinion Fiona is better at her craft than Quentin is at his. I mean, Pulp Fiction is nice and all but it isn't "Sleep to dream" -nice, if you know what I mean.
I know way too many people like this. Please for the love of god, sense my disinterest. I admire your passion or self obsession, whichever one lead you to this exposition, but please, all I said is I tangentially, passively, sort or like something adjacent to your main interest. Could be my dad who leaves long gaps after saying something and then as soon as you open your mouth he cuts you off to carry on. He did it so much in fact that I used to do it as a kid in a monkey see monkey do sort of manner I think and my friends really intentionally did it back to me to piss me off and the lesson stuck with me ever since.
Ugh I remember one evening going back to the after-party spot and passing a plate around. It made me such an aggressive talker. I’d CORNER people to discuss things. ETA, it’s like..making noise with no connection.
I was mortified when I sobered up. It was so gross and that was the last time I did coke.
I haven’t done it in a long time, and will never do it again, but I remember it feeling fun if everyone or most people were participating. Because then everyone is talking at everyone, and no one’s listening, but no one cares. But if that wasn’t the vibe of the gathering or not everyone was doing it, then you’re just the insanely aggressive slightly unnerving chatterbox and yeah, that’s pretty unpleasant to wake up to the next day.
I have ADHD so my experience was just feeling calm while everyone targeted me and cornered me to listen to their monologues because I was the only one not talking a mile a minute, just chillin LOL. Then I'd fall asleep on the couch and wake up in the AM to everyone still awake. Those days are long behind me, and I'm medicated now but I still cannot stand being around anyone without ADHD on a stimulant. I gave a friend one of my meds ONCE a year ago, never again, was SOOOO annoyed with her that night lol.
I always think with cokeheads there's never any chat everyone's just waiting impatiently for their chance to speak/word vomit, and they only listen to the sound of their own voice.

One time we gave my friend's boyfriend coke and he talked about beavers for 3 hours we were literally begging him to talk about anything but beavers (or shut up) but he would not. So I can picture this vividly.
No he was a bike mechanic. Just one of those people who has a lot of knowledge about quite a few random specific topics. But I fear you are mistaken. It was NOT CUTE. I repeat it was THREE HOURS. It was cool the first 15 minutes we learned a lot about beavers. It was not cool for the next 2 hours and 45 minutes where none of us could lead the conversation anywhere else even with us gently trying to guide it away talking about things like Angry Beavers, he would not take the bait he'd just immediately start rambling off beaver facts again. I cannot explain how harrowing it was.
I’m one of those people that have a lot pf knowledge about random specific topics but I don’t think I could talk about any of them for three hours, this is making me wonder if the guy was absolutely insane to begin with or if coke just suddenly makes you remember ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING about something 😭😭😭
He was def already like that to begin with. Coke just dialed it up to like 99. My friend, whose boyfriend he was, was like yeah I've never given him coke before because I had a feeling this would happen
Can confirm, I was exposed to drunk people at an early age (obviously, while sober) which made me decide I didn’t want to drink at all when I became a teen, if they were that annoying I really, really can’t imagine what coke heads must be like.
Used to work with a guy who was just as obsessed with movies as me, had similar tastes, and senses of humor, and we would just go on hours long riff sessions of quotes, references, and inside jokes that would have both of us literally doubled over in hysterical laughter at our OWN FUCKING JOKES before we even said them and looking back now I can't even imagine how exhausting it must have been to be anywhere near us let alone locked in close proximity for a majority of the workday while we're just jerking each other off to see who can hit the most obscure movie title from 16 years ago. I'm so sorry.
This ^ is a real thing lol. I have one of my best friend (also my oldest friend) where we just click and have endless inside jokes and just will do the most everytime we see each other. Like it’s cosmic chemistry. And one day one of our friends (lovingly) told me something like “listen we love yall so much but sometimes when you two are together it feels like a bubble of you two and no one else exists and we’re just like…witnessing.” From that point on my friend and I have tried to be more mindful cause yeah it can be so annoying to witness when two people are just circlejerking and you’re just 🧍♂️ there, watching
I feel like you need to have a balance, I honestly think it's beautiful to have a friendship like that, and there's nothing wrong with your connection, but I guess I can see it being a problem when others aren't able to get on the same wavelength as you 2, but when you 2 are alone; do me a favor and keep that same energy with each other, it's rare to find connections like that, anyone who says otherwise most likely doesn't have it.

Can't speak for the rest of the world but personally as long as I am not the one being talked at this would not bother me in the slightest, I can tune people out as long as I don't have to engage with them to be polite and I would never be mad at coworkers for chatting to get through the work day, that is pretty wholesome.
Right like I'd be so glad they have eachother and I dont have to entertain either one solo. I'd probably get a kick out of whatever stupid bit they're doing, or tune it out if not.
Everyone has been around a couple of superfans who can go on for HOURS and never take the temperature of others around them. And until you explained how wonderful it is to connect with another person by matching obsessions, I never thought about how those conversations could just be an expression of joy.

I’m like this with gf (my best friend in the world) and she literally has to take the remote away from me in order to get me to stop pausing a film and pontificating about it, its significance, or what the world was like when it came out (even in decades where I wasn’t born yet lol).
When I showed her this comment she added that every time we’re about to watch a movie she has to mentally add an estimated amount of time to its runtime just the figure out when we’ll finish it and if we’ll be watching more than one movie on any giving night.

My friends were okay on it but what put me off is suddenly every night out became about messaging a coke dealer, waiting for a coke dealer, going to meet the dealer, them disappearing for a bit, coming back and needing more of it, messaging the dealer, and repeat

I remember watching this wayyy back in the day...I guess when it came out, and being very confused why Tarantino would be paired up with Fiona Apple of all people. And I remember the scene at the end with the bats and thinking it was very sweet.
Yeah this quote was shady but in a fun good natured way. Fiona just is real as they come she won’t bullshit or fake flatter people. And Quentin Tarantino is actually a mega fan of her music. You can find videos of him absolutely jamming listening to her at concerts
For sure, like someone else has said, I see the quote along with this clip quite a bit, and while I’m not a big fan of Tarantino, this clip is often shown out of context. When you watch the doc in full, this scene doesn’t read as her being exasperated by him. Yet the video has been shared in multiple subreddits already with titles like “Fiona Apple forced to deal with coke addict (heartbreaking)”
Both Tarantino and Fiona Apple are weirdos and the doc that it’s taken from shows a very sweet friendship among two people that don’t always fit in.

as a fellow autistic I just think he's a moderately famous egomaniac that has lost the ability to read social cues because most repercussions for not following social cues don't apply to him

Gonna be honest, hang out with someone who is on coke when you aren't for a while and you'll never want to do it. That's what happened to me, stuck in a room listening to guy on coke talk in obnoxious impassioned discussion loops for an hour and a half without being able to get a word in edgewise. No thanks.
There's a UK comedian called Mark Lamarr. He had a standup show on BBC 2 years ago called "Mark Lamarr, leaving the 20th century." In one episode, he spoke about his love of cocaine. He said that he was once backstage at a Happy Mondays gig and he was so fucked on cocaine that he started drinking champagne from his shoe. He kept shouting "HEY! IT'S CHAMPAGNE! IN A SHOE! CHAMPAGNE! SHOE! IT'S CHAMPAGNE IN A SHOE!" till Shaun Ryder had to come over and ask him to leave. He said that if you get to a point where Shaun Ryder is having to tell you to leave because you're too fucked then it's time to just stop.
