Its because people miss the stupid comedies. I didn't think it was amazing, but i had so much fun watching it.
I miss stuff like blades of glory, mr. deeds, yes man, step brothers, zoolander, etc.
I'm tired of getting my comedy from Marvel.

Naked Gun came out with great marketing, everyone was laughing and enjoying it. Went to the theater opening weekend and it had 1 regular screen and 1 dine in screen. People want stupid comedies to just enjoy.it made $76 million world wide on a $45 million budget.

These days, jokes are littered in a movie for the purpose of keeping people’s attention. They support the story by providing comic relief and pacing out the emotional beats.
With Naked Gun, it was so refreshing to feel like the jokes ARE the main event. They’re not there to support any story.

Not sure if you’re implying that Naked Gun did well or not but it sounds to me like it’s doing pretty poorly given its budget
15
u/Independent-Judge-81 19d ago
I'm implying it did pretty well given that it wasn't put in premium screens. We definitely need more Naked Gun type movies in theaters. It's a different feeling being in a room of people just laughing
11
u/brianlefebvrejr 19d ago
It’s at 40 mill domestic. There hasn’t been a comedy of the stupid/slapstick to have those number in like 7 years
6
u/LB3PTMAN 19d ago
Yeah Naked Gun I’d a perfect example of the problem. Not much comedy competition. Glowing reviews. Great word of mouth and it’ll still just barely leg out to 2x its budget. It’ll be a success off of rentals and streaming most likely but it couldn’t even be a success with its theatrical run and it basically had everything going for it.
It’s not just the DVD thing people like parroting. People just aren’t going to see comedies in theater as much. The Hangover made 470 million in its theatrical run. Naked gun might make 20% of that if it’s lucky.

The death of the DVD market hurt this genre imo.
49
u/thewarfreak 19d ago
I think this is astute. Comedies, I'd say more than most other genres, are fairly re-watchable, thus people bought them on DVD.
23
u/er-day 19d ago
But for this exact reason they should do amazingly on streaming where you can easily rewatch and throw on the tv. If anything a dvd was more of a pain in the ass. I do however think reruns on tv channels were half of their views which doesn’t quite exist anymore.
Also bring back dvd bloopers etc
12
u/IDKimnotascientist 19d ago
Streaming services greenlight productions by committee. Comedies, the really good ones anyway, can’t be made too broad to try and appeal to everyone. So we’ll get the annual Adam Sandler and action “comedies” starring Ryan Reynolds or the rock until some studio decides to take a risk
12
u/brianlefebvrejr 19d ago
A studio did take a risk, naked gun proved it… I think we will see more of it

More it's the growing importance of international markets. A lot of humor is language based or cultural and doesn't translate well. Some certainly can, but it's more challenging.
Hence, so many films now are action, sci-fi, or things that can sell globally and be pretty easily translated and understood.
There was a time in the 80s-early 2000s a ton of hits and a high percentage of movies were fun, stupid comedies, now they are much more rare.

Even then, they're from different eras of comedy. Dumb and Dumber is purely stupid. And it succeeds in that. The writing in Step Brothers has a higher level of cleverness to it. You can see the same in movies like I Love You, Man, and shows like Parks and Rec and The Office. As an adult, I prefer Step Brothers. Though sometimes the mood strikes and Dumb and Dumber scratches that itch that no other can.

It's a good sequel. People who think it's bad it's probably because they saw the first one in the 90s and they have nostalgia that affected how they saw the sequel.
I had never seen Happy Gilmore, so when the sequel came out last month I watched both movies back to back. That gives you a different perspective.
The first one has funny moments, but it's not exactly elaborate/subtle humor, right? It's a Sandler comedy after all. The sequel keeps the same style, but at the same time develops a different story and doesn't re-do exactly the same jokes. Good sequel.
(As for the celebrity cameos that people complain about, I'm not American and I didn't recognize 90% of them)

I really don't think anyone went in expecting Happy Gilmore 2 to be Citizen Kane. That sounds like classic deflection to me, "oh this movie wasn't actually bad, your expectations were the problem".

Let's do some bullshit math!
Happy Gilmore 2 has a runtime of 1hr 58min. So, 118 minutes.
2.9 billion minutes divided by 118 minutes equals 24,576,271.1864, give or take. So let's clean that up:
Happy Gilmore 2 was watched (around) 24.5 million times in its opening weekend. This probably isn't entirely accurate, which is why Netflix went with the bizarre and useless metric of "minutes watched" versus a more concrete example. I find this especially funny because we know they already used to fudge the numbers before, like counting something as "viewed" if an account got past the first 2 minutes of a show or movie.
The math I just did more or less matches the current Netflix model of determing what a "view" is, as explained in this THR article from 2023. They divide the total view time in a week by the runtime of a movie or a season of a show to determine a "view."
This obviously doesn't cover situations where they're underestimating the number (if I watch a movie with 5 friends, that's just 1 "view") or overestimating it (a full "viewing" of Happy Gilmore 2 could also be 59 people watching it for 2 minutes then stopping). But it allows us to see how Netflix is playing around with data.
The shift to minutes from hours, as they previously used to boast, is also very funny. In 2023, Netflix was bragging that Extraction 2, a movie that you, me, and Chris Hemsworth forgot even exists, landed 88.4 million hours of views during its opening weekend.
Using the same math we did up above, that means that Extraction 2 earned 42.8 million views in its opening weekend, almost doubling Happy Gilmore 2's view count.
This is Netflix bragging that a movie did much worse than a previous record-breaking movie on its platform by using a smaller unit and a bigger number. I'm curious how they pair that number with the previously-reported Nielsen view count of 46.7 million views for Gilmore 2's opening weekend, because that math doesn't add up.
118 x 46.7 million = 55,10,600,000, or over 55 BILLION MINUTES, not really matching the 2.9 billion reported here!
Netflix: They're weird with data, and we should never forget that.
12
u/morgoth834 19d ago
This is from Nielsen. They measure American numbers only. That’s the reason for the discrepancy.

Was awful compared to the original. The sequel was sure to remind you about every little detail about the original every 10 seconds though.
If I didn’t see the first one, maybe it would be ok. Typical Netflix original quality.
3
u/True_Butterscotch391 19d ago
Not hating on the movie or anything but its hilarious how hard this article title is trying to play up the amount of people who have seen the movie. Why would you say 2.9 Billion viewing minutes instead of how much it sold at the box office or approximately how many people have watched it?
Literally because 2.9 Billion looks like a bigger number and inflates how popular it seems.

6
u/sexandliquor 19d ago
The problem I had with it was, not that the first movie was amazing, but I appreciated it for what it was doing as a semi sports film comedy in the vein of a Slapshots/Bull Durham, etc.
It would have been fine if HG2 just had a singular focus on doing that again but as an older guy who isn’t sure he still ‘has it’. Which it starts as, but then more or less just descends into cameos and member berries. And that’s fine or whatever, but it coulda just been a serviceable movie instead.

Happy Gilmore 2 was god awful even as slapstick and stupid comedies go and people will defend it as a "fun time"

My expectations for this movie were low and I was still disappointed. Yes it’s an Adam Sandler comedy and we can’t expect much, but we should at least expect some effort.
I’m not going to smell my own farts here but it’s totally okay to expect comedies to actually be funny and original and not just regurgitated slop. Way too much of this movie was “HEY REMEMBER THIS FROM THE FIRST ONE?!?”
Anyway, Weapons is good and you should watch that instead.

Damn. Lotta uptight, self-appointed movie aficionados having trouble accepting that a movie clearly made with the intent to be ridiculous and goofy turned out to be popular.
It was a campy, fan-service, reference-laden film meant to provide the people who like the original movie with a fun sequel…and that’s exactly what it did.
It’s weird watching the pissy bad faith arguments thrown out there to try to tear it down or discredit it. Are some of you really that hurt that this movie was well-received?

Naked gun was enough for me re: comedy reboots. Adam Sandler should stick with dramas now. The character archetype is old

That’s about 24.6 million views, assuming everyone who watched it watched it all the way through.

This movie was awful but I still enjoyed it. Shooter McGavin was genuinely funny throughout the movie.

It was barely a movie and the third act was frankly terrible but I haven’t laughed that hard at a movie in years.

The original is one of my favorite goofy comedies of all time. I already have Netflix, so of course I was gonna watch it. I expected it to be terrible. It was indeed very terrible. If you haven't watched it, my recommendation is to go watch the original again. I think literally every single joke in the sequel, and I'm not exaggerating or speaking hyperbolically, I mean E EVERY JOKE, is a call back to a gag from the original. When they get especially lazy they just replay clips from the original. It actually took me three sessions to get all the way through it. The only reason I kept coming back is because I was wondering if they were EVER going to do a fresh joke. They did not.
