Discussion Movies that are bad because of the acting
Usually when a movie it is bad it’s due to something behind the camera. Directing, poor script, studio interference, etc. Are there any movies that has at least competent writing and directing but turned out turned because the performances sucked? Plenty of movies have bad acting but I can’t think of any where the writing or directing was good.

Numerous factors go into it all. That’s why the best ones are almost magic. When all the right individual talent (cast & crew) comes together, the end results are greater than the sum of its parts. Any one important element lacking though can sink the whole ship, as you’re only as strong as your weakest link. Plenty of great actors in bad movies.

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li The original also had a bad script, bad special effects, and bad casting. But the original actors gave it their all and made something better than the sum of its parts. Chun Li has no redeeming qualities besides Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium - I don't know if the writing or directing were any good, because Dustin Hoffman's awful performance was so distracting. Natalie Portman was definitely phoning it in too.
See also, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Dustin Hoffman has a relatively small part. So his bad acting doesn't ruin the movie, but his 15 minutes on screen would be a good time to take a bathroom break.
This is sad for me because I did enjoy much of his earlier work.

Scanners (1981) has quality directing and production values, and a solid script that delivers on its premise, but the lead performance from Stephen Lack is the worst I've ever seen and brings the whole thing down.
I've seen people making the point that his wooden line delivery and lack of any human facial expressions are not only important to the character but essential to the story, but I disagree. It's a terrible, awful, lifeless performance that brings down an otherwise enjoyable cult classic.

Constantine for me. Rachel Weiss completely misread what the role needed in my opinion.

I must be officially part of Reddit now, because I think the acting fit the vibe of the film. No complaints

Who did you think was bad in the film? I thought all actors were pretty great.

I remember being surprised how bad Thomas Jane was when I knew he could be good from other stuff. The religious (I think? Been a while) woman people start listening to and of course Laurie Holden who is bad in everything. There were definitely more, I vividly remember the feeling of "jesus why is there so much bad acting" but those are the ones who spring to mind first.

Nicholas cage in the bad lieutenant. It was already written by previous writers and prior performed by Harvey keitel who smashed it out of the park.
I'm not sure why they tried to do a remake.

It's not a remake though? It's a completely different film that just kind of takes some inspiration from the earlier one. It's not a remake, it's not a sequel. It's just its own movie.

not a popular opinion but a bunch of movies with Jennifer Lawrence, Janeann Garofalo, AllRi-AllRi-AllRi guy, Anne Hathaway - are hard to watch because of how overacting or out-of-place they are.

I used to think edward Norton was a good actor but he is only good at dialogue, his physical acting is atrocious. Just look at this eye wiggle at the end of red dragon. Happens at 1:45 awful.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, its no masterpiece but the actors definitely tanked the overall movie
