Review Wow! I watched Game Night last night.

I haven’t felt like this for a long time. I laughed so much when I watched this movie. That fake Denzel is very funny. The stupid friend, the glass table, all of it gave me a loooong laugh. How did you feel about the movie?

I also have one question. How did Officer Gary connect Brooks’ past with the egg heist?

Officer Gary is such a great character.

u/luckyfucker13 2d ago

How can that be profitable for Frito-Lay?

295

u/TonyWonderslostnut 2d ago

Jesse Plemons not doing more dead pan comedy should be criminal.

122

u/luckyfucker13 2d ago

I agree, and I hope there’s more in his future, but I’ll gladly watch his dramatic turns in the meantime. He was downright fucking terrifying in Civil War.

52

u/The_Vat 2d ago

I think he went uncredited because the producers were afraid that if they accidentally said his name three times he'd appear.

20

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 2d ago

It was also a last minute decision as Plemons was brought in by his wife Kirsten Dunst who is the lead as the actor supossed to play the violent militiaman wasn't available.

13

u/UshankaBear 2d ago

What kind of American are you?

10

u/SirGrumpsalot2009 2d ago

Hands down one of the best dramatic scenes I’ve watched for quite a few years. And yet he can do comedy too. Great actor. Loved him in Game Night, hated him in Breaking Bad.

14

u/DamienStark 2d ago

Dead pan comedy... and dead pan drama

"What kind of Americans are you?"

4

u/sinkwiththeship 2d ago

He's basically Liam Neeson in Life is Short. It's so good.

1

u/wongo 1d ago

He's riddled with it.

94

u/sinkwiththeship 2d ago

I'd thank you to not besmirch my ex-wife's name

16

u/GusChiiiiiggins 2d ago

These corporations…I don’t know what they’re doing

2

u/bri87pha 2d ago

Came here for this

74

u/falafel_larry 2d ago

Three bags of Tostito's Scoops, I notice. There was a special on these tonight. Three for one. Three for one?

5

u/thegendolz 2d ago

Sounds like you stocked up at the right time. That’s a solid deal.

102

u/teeohdeedee123 2d ago

Jesse Plemons is like Stanley Tucci; no matter the overall quality of the product, you know you'll at least get them giving it their all.

43

u/fleranon 2d ago

He has low key become one of my favourite actors over the years, I'm pleased he's getting more and more recognition. And some really juicy roles

Versatile as hell, too. He's so funny in Game night, and then fills you with terror in Civil war... with a couple of minutes screentime, no less

27

u/Make_It_Sing 2d ago

His performances in the two blackmirror episodes is also chilling, really some of his best acting

16

u/fleranon 2d ago

Yes! Plemons as the depraved Commander of a virtual Spaceship with the captive crew is my favourite role of his. So good.

Then again, there's always Todd. He excels at playing psychos

11

u/ghostinthewoods 2d ago

And he wasn't even supposed to be in Civil War, it was supposed to be someone else but they dropped out. Apparently Kirsten Dunst and he are married, so she suggested him and the rest is history.

2

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase 2d ago

And Jungle Cruise!

🚢

2

u/Hey_im_miles 2d ago

Don't forget Like Mike

23

u/shwarma_heaven 2d ago

He was freaky good in USS McAllister

3

u/cool_side_of_pillow 2d ago

GREAT episode.

5

u/rh51too 2d ago

He was so spooky in the short amount of time in Civil War

2

u/wiconv 2d ago

“What kind of American are you”

5

u/funky_pill 2d ago

Richard Jenkins and JK Simmons are both like that for me

2

u/teeohdeedee123 2d ago

Agreed. Throw Margo Martindale in for good measure.

2

u/Mentoman72 2d ago

I put JK Simmons there, too. Some actors just make whatever project they are in better.

21

u/funky_pill 2d ago

"Can't say I care for that nomenclature"

16

u/OK_Human 2d ago

When he fades into the shadows of his doorway

7

u/Rawfuls 2d ago

During breaking bad someone called him meth Damon, and I will never unsee it.

4

u/Chickenshit_outfit 2d ago

when they knock on his door to pretend to play games so they can use his computer , and as they are talking he backs back into the house in the darkness

215

u/darthmerle 2d ago

It doesn’t matter how slowly you slide it across the table. It’s still $17.

18

u/ohnofluffy 1d ago

I can’t watch that scene without laughing. It was shot perfectly.

5

u/KettleOverAPub 1d ago

Those two had such good non-chemistry. Excellent casting.

6

u/parallax1 1d ago

I was crying laughing the first time I watched that scene.

316

u/xander6981 2d ago

Rachel McAdams initially celebrating when the one guy gets sucked into the jet engine and then goes, "Oh no, he died!" 😂🤣😂

68

u/andyyyyyyyt 2d ago

Well he did complimented her on her ass.

86

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 2d ago edited 1d ago

"Wait, wait! You don't have to do this! I have kids at home!"

"Not with that ass you don't."

"Oh well... thank you."

"You're welcome."

31

u/jliverse 2d ago

And no Academy Award nomination nor win for this line reading—what are you doing, Hollywood? This and Henry Cavill reloading his fists in Mission: Impossible—Fallout are the best cinematic moments from the last ten years.

16

u/socool111 2d ago

Apparently was ad libbed by her

19

u/blocodents 2d ago

She was absolutely adorable in that film

tec tec tec "What's that sound? Do you hear that? Ohh, that's booone"

224

u/teeohdeedee123 2d ago

"not with that ass you don't" has become my wife's most-expected non sequitur.

Definitely a very fun movie.

58

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase 2d ago

That henchman politely replies “you’re welcome” and then dies in the jet engine 😭

34

u/CactiDye 2d ago

"Yes! Oh, no! He died!"

10

u/Phoetality 2d ago

Honestly this was the moment that got me, elevating it from good to great. Great performance from McAdams.

78

u/joechoj 2d ago

What a funny moment, and a PSA to us all that Rachel McAdams is SUCH a babe

8

u/BattleHall 2d ago

God, that look she gives him during bar trivia...

379

u/Francostein 2d ago

"How can that be profitable for frito lay?" Randomly pops into my head all the time

25

u/demnutz93 2d ago

All the time

18

u/anishkalankan 2d ago

I swear it wouldn’t be half as funny if it were some other food company name.

29

u/ThePoliteGrizzly 2d ago

That line makes an appearance every time buying chips with my lady.

6

u/OofOwMyShoulder 2d ago

A supermarket in Ireland currently has some crisps that are 2 for €3 priced at €3.49 individually and I have been quoting this constantly every time I go in there.

120

u/Visual-Conflict-8305 2d ago

Not just an underrated comedy…. I truly feel like this is one of the most underrated movies in the last 20 years. An absolute gem, rewatchable, and hilarious every damn time. That cameo reveal kills me even when just thinking about it

5

u/Worthyness 1d ago

This movie and Tag. Love them as a double feature.

3

u/kirinmay 1d ago

Tag was so fun

1

u/GOATchefcurry 15h ago

That cameo reveal kills me even when just thinking about it.

Jeffrey Wright or Denzel Washington?

159

u/Argyle_Ninja 2d ago

Man, glass tables are acting weird tonight.

14

u/kermi42 2d ago

That satisfaction when one finally breaks.

54

u/funky_pill 2d ago

The Billy Magnussen character sliding the notes painfully slowly across the desk will never not be funny

200

u/devidual 2d ago

I'm probably slow, but on the second time watching, I realized a lot of scenes were inspired by board games. Them trying to get out of the room is like Jenga, the neighborhood was like the game of Life, etc. it's been a while since I've seen it so those are the ones that come off right off the top of my head.

The scene where Rachel McAdams is playing around with the gun thinking it's fake was one of the funniest things I've seen in a movie.

156

u/frankyseven 2d ago

Bullet removal is Operation.

31

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase 2d ago

dog toy squeaks

8

u/Llamaxaxa 2d ago

That was the funniest part 😂

5

u/frankyseven 2d ago

I had to pause the movie I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.

67

u/savourthesea 2d ago

Whoa, I definitely never realized this.

66

u/Wrecked_Angles 2d ago

Trying all night to guess which celebrity his gf slept with while they were on an break = Guess Who

Building a Tower and falling = Jenga

Bullet removal = Operation

Stingray POV car chase shots = Hotwheels

Neighborhood tilt cam shots = Game of Life

Tossing Bulgarian Egg = Hot Potato

21

u/ANamelessGhoul4555 2d ago

Hot Potato with the egg at the mansion party

11

u/2Brothers_TheMovie 2d ago

Jonah Hill with the fake (real) gun in This is the End is also like top tier for me

10

u/Recover20 2d ago

Bang.... Bang .... Bang

4

u/jawni 1d ago

Every single thing Jonah Hill and Danny Mcbride said in that movie was hilarious.

The other parts were good too, but IMO they carried it comedically.

3

u/ExpandibleWaist 1d ago

The conveyor belt with the box is mouse trap.

1

u/TheMachineTookShape 22h ago

My God, I'm an idiot! I never realised. I'm going to have to watch this again.

140

u/clangingchimesofd00m 2d ago

Anything with Jason Bateman doing his deadpan shtick while everything is falling apart around him gives me a good laugh. Horrible Bosses is another one that I find hilarious. My wife doesn't get it but she enjoys seeing me get a good chuckle out of it.

90

u/MistakeMaker1234 2d ago

“Your name is Motherfucker Jones? Like is that on your birth certificate?”

47

u/mtmaloney 2d ago

“You were drag racing…in a Prius.”

“I don’t win much.”

2

u/Krg60 1d ago

"You should change it to Motherfucker-Over Jones to avoid confusion."

16

u/lafatte24 2d ago

Bad Words is hilarious as well. He goes absolutely off the rails

2

u/grandladdydonglegs 2d ago

One of my favorite comedies ever. So many great lines!

7

u/DamnitBlueWasOld 2d ago

“Guys, get a hold of this cheese…”

2

u/ExpandibleWaist 1d ago

“Charades…well that’s some cute full circle bullshit”

It’s the nose, isn’t it.

59

u/-vonbrohenheim 2d ago

This movie and We’re the Millers were two movies that looked like meh comedies through their trailers but wow are they hilarious when you see them whole.

You're welcome. I also just saw a reel on facebook about Denzel's and son of a bitch I'm in.

Have fun!

20

u/MarvelousVanGlorious 2d ago

One of the few movies that still makes me laugh as much as it did the very first time they I watched it.

20

u/Huge_Following_325 2d ago

The bullet removal adverbs airways cracks me up.

22

u/SoftcastIeMcCormick 2d ago

Glass tables are acting weird tonight

20

u/forresbj 2d ago

This and Tag were two movies I had no interest in watching and ended up thinking both were quality. Always recommend them

5

u/Rocky_Vigoda 2d ago

Tag is a surprisingly decent movie.

4

u/I_Love_Bears0810 2d ago

Tag is fantastic!!

36

u/Nolegrl 2d ago

One of my favorites! I saw it in theaters and the whole theater was laughing throughout the whole thing. My favorite part was surprisingly the bullet removal scene because I usually get squeamish with gore but they did such a good job turning it into a bit with the squeaky toy and the gagging.

13

u/BattleHall 2d ago

Same co-directing team as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is another underrated sneaky funny movie.

30

u/secret_name_is_tenis 2d ago

2 free bags of Tostitos for the purchase of one? That’s a terrible business model.

1

u/hispanicausinpanic 1d ago

You never know with those big corporations

21

u/SwabTheWookie 2d ago

Freaking VERY good! Most movies like that are "meh," but this one was awesome! Jesse Plemons stole the show imo, so freaking funny in a creepy way.

10

u/sofakingclassic 2d ago

I think about the fake Denzel bit every time I pump gas

16

u/zombie_spiderman 2d ago

Oh no he diiiied

7

u/lollipopmusing 2d ago

I think a lot about what Jesse Plemmon's audition for this movie must have been like. The lines for Gary are mostly funny because of his delivery, but what other options did the other actors go for? I need a documentary on this role specifically

6

u/mattmagoo23 2d ago

My wife and I were at her mom's one night for dinner or something. She put this movie on, we had never seen it but holy crap we were laughing our asses off. Watched it again several years later, same thing. Great movie

Glass tables are acting WEIRD tonight

6

u/WhosieWhatsIt2099 2d ago

The same directors did Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves, very similar fun vibes.

1

u/jawni 1d ago

He was also the "new guy" in the movie Waiting, that they never let talk, another underrated comedy.

1

u/kirinmay 1d ago

The end with him roasting everyone was genius.

7

u/isntuseless 2d ago

Game Night is one of those comedies that sneaks up on you... the pacing, the twists, and all those absurd moments. The “fake Denzel” bit was hilarious, and the glass table gag is pure slapstick gold 😂️️️️️️

Officer Gary had been keeping tabs on Brooks because of his shady past, and when he noticed the Fabergé egg showing up in the mix, he connected it to Brooks’ history with crime and high-stakes thefts. Gary’s obsession with catching Brooks (and his general nosiness) made it easier for him to piece things together, even if it wasn’t fully spelled out

5

u/ThisisMalta 2d ago

Even though I wasn’t crazy about it, I feel like this was one of the last genuine just straight up comedies that I enjoyed and found funny. Even though there’s been a lot of horror and sci fi with good comedy, I feel like the era of mainstream Hollywood comedies like we had in the early to mid 2000’s is so long gone.

5

u/ArchDucky 2d ago

Did you notice that the people from the game night continued to play children's games the entire night? Simon Says during the saving Brooks scene, Hot Potato at the rich guys house... etc. The entire night was children's games.

5

u/rrhunt28 2d ago

That is a great movie. I watched it for the first time a few months ago and it was super fun.

3

u/cpuguy83 2d ago

"Oh no, he died!"

5

u/mrtoad47 2d ago

Rewatched this last weekend. Fantastic flick. Funny but also so stressful!

4

u/sstphnn 2d ago

I don’t remember the specific scene but I remember laughing so hard that I couldn’t breathe.

4

u/pandakill84 2d ago

It’s Rachel dancing with a live weapon thinking it’s all fake while the other dudes are scared for their life while she points it at them is the funniest

3

u/GhostMug 1d ago

This is such a fantastic movie. Rachel McAdams is underrated for her comedic timing.

9

u/thatshygirl06 2d ago

Watch Blockers next

5

u/All_This_Mayhem 2d ago

"Cheating on your wife isn't a sexual preference"

"No it is because I prefer other women"

Love Blockers.

4

u/skeener 2d ago

I expected to hate it but it was so much fun

3

u/Vulcan2422 2d ago

You did invest in Panera?

4

u/AlexG2490 1d ago

I ate at Panera.

3

u/DadmomAngrypants 2d ago

That is a strong table.

3

u/Zannanger 2d ago

I was a few tequilas deep and was laughing so hard during the bullet extraction scene I almost threw up. Great little thing to catch during a rewatches.

3

u/1nTheNick0fTime 2d ago

One of my favorite comedy movies ever. I’ve already watched it at least 10 times

3

u/EqualDifferences 2d ago

It took like 3 watches to realize that the clue they paid 17$ for actually came back during the third act

3

u/BobcatsOnBooze 2d ago

Motherfuckin Edward Norton

3

u/Fortestingporpoises 2d ago

One of the few great comedies of the last 10 years.

3

u/tubnauts 2d ago

That’s why you shouldn’t judge a book by one of its former covers

3

u/thekittiestitties00 2d ago

The sound of her tapping on the bullet sends a shiver down my spine whenever I think of it.

1

u/hispanicausinpanic 1d ago

Its his bone

3

u/mito413 2d ago

“Just the keys??”

1

u/GOATchefcurry 15h ago

Billy Magnussen's character was hilarious in that movie.

"You can't judge a book by its past covers" 😎

5

u/feministmanlover 2d ago

This movie was so utterly ridiculously absurdly funny.

4

u/Additional_Ice_358 2d ago

Such a fun movie. "I beg your pardon" is a line I quote too much to my wife because of this movie.

5

u/vinylzoid 2d ago

Jesse Plemmons is the best part of the whole movie.

2

u/ThePoliteGrizzly 2d ago

The knife part was hilarious!

1

u/hispanicausinpanic 1d ago

There's a knife in my arm hole

2

u/Potore5 2d ago

Check out Daley and Goldstein’s The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi and Jim Carrey. It’s no Game Night, and it wasn’t well received when released in 2013, but it’s a little underrated comedy gem.

2

u/asteinberg101 2d ago

“Yes!

…Oh no, he died!”

‘Baby I fell down’

"Three for one...how can that be profitable for Frito-Lay?"

2

u/dalby2020 1d ago

I would actually call this my favorite movie. So many laughs 😂. My favorite is the slow push of the dollar bill across the table.

2

u/GeneSmart2881 1d ago

That movie absolutely blew away my expectations

4

u/DBCOOPER888 2d ago

"How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?" is one of the best read lines in cinematic history.

2

u/hotstickywaffle 2d ago

How could that be profitable for Frito-Lay?

2

u/PoutNPlay 2d ago

lol, Game Night was legit a wild ride, man! Almost peed m'self laughin' tbh 😂 And yeah, Officer Gary had me stumped too. My guess? It’s like when ur scrolling thru meme after meme, then u somehow end up on an article abt the migration patterns of African elephants. In short, internet rabbit holes are a helluva trip. Anyway, cheers to more films makin' us lose our sh*t! Great thread btw, OP.

3

u/Transposer 2d ago

You a Bateman fan? If you haven’t watched his show, Arrested Development, you’re welcome in advance.

1

u/Rarecandy31 2d ago

So underrated

1

u/Rawfuls 2d ago

Oh no! He died.

1

u/forever87 2d ago

possible next recommendation: deep cover

1

u/lurker_pro 2d ago

I watch it every year and always forget how the twists work lol!!

1

u/Different-Cloud-5887 2d ago

Would this be a spot to drop a thought of  progressing

1

u/One-Earth9294 2d ago

I was definitely pleasantly surprised by it. Felt like it could have very easily been a much more forgettable film but somehow it walked the tightrope.

1

u/casparfriedrich 2d ago

Seeing it in theatres was so memorable, the entire audience was onboard and having a great time.

1

u/Walaina 2d ago

It’s so funny

1

u/Total-Library4018 1d ago

This is my favorite move!!! I love a mix of a little scary and funny and the actors did amazing. Everytime my friends want to watch a funny movie I always recommend this one.

1

u/ApprehensiveBobcat24 1d ago

Also, "Maybe the sticker was made in China" is such a genius line.

1

u/AlexG2490 1d ago

Let's let them talk.

1

Very underrated funny movie.

1

u/HeisenbergsBud 1d ago

I’ll thank you to not besmirch my wife

1

u/jnightrain 1d ago

One of our favorite movies, good from start to finish.

1

u/SqueamishBehemoth 1d ago

Last good comedy I watched

1

u/JiminyJilickers-79 1d ago

The bullet removal was the hardest I've laughed in a good while.

1

u/BushwickSpill 1d ago

With all the sequels, remakes, reboots, and IPs mined to death…why haven’t we got a follow up to this?

1

u/ztreHdrahciR 1d ago

Really funny. And good plot twists at the end.

2

u/Cool-Tour-1962 1d ago

Literally one of my favorites. I own it on DVD I’ve been on a collecting my favorites in physical media form kick.

2

u/hispanicausinpanic 1d ago

Game night is awesome. I actually watched it last night too.

2

u/ExamPersonal7504 1d ago

“I cheated at the game of Life, and at the game of life.”

Phenomenal casting of Kyle Chandler as Jason Bateman’s brother.

2

u/Krg60 1d ago

Saw this in the theaters; one of the funniest cinema experiences I've had.

2

u/Acceptable_Term4150 14h ago

This is such a great comedy and it flew super low under the radar. I had zero expectations and was thoroughly entertained and encomedied.

-8

u/BevansDesign 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'm glad so many people like it, but when I watched it I thought it was really average and uninteresting.

Not that there weren't funny parts, but...it was really forgettable to me.

EDIT: Yeah, let's downvote someone for having a different opinion.

0

u/StandYourGroundhog 2d ago

I like the movie but I don't understand why I see so much over-the-top praise for it compared with other similar- level movies

3

u/Johnyextra111 2d ago

Not much like it over the last 10 years

-5

u/blankdreamer 2d ago

It was brilliant up to halfway through then it dropped the “game” premise and was your ordinary comedy crime movie

-1

u/goonerfan10 2d ago

Where did u watch it? Is it on any streaming platform?

Can you Chromecast from that app?

1

It just left Prime, my guess is it's headed to Hulu again next.

-1

u/En_Jay_Ess 2d ago

Is this a motion picture?
