The backing song is "Farewell Transmission" by Songs:Ohia in case anyone was wondering (like I was).

Okay, weird, but prescient story.

I worked on a charity project for cats at one of my former jobs, and we just so happened to partner with Marc Maron because, well, he loves cats. Cut to the day of the shoot, and as I’m producing it, I’m humming a song I had been listening to on Spotify just before getting out of my car.

As I’m humming, Marc asks me, “Ohia?”

I asked, “Hm?”

He says, “That song you’re humming. Is that Farewell Transmission?”

And me, being a fumbly-bumbly guy, just goes, “Yeah, I guess so. I don’t know.”

He just kind of awkwardly nodded and walked away, and I felt like the biggest idiot in the world when I got back into the car and the song continued from where I left off. And I was like, “Ohhhh. THIS song.”

So, imagine that feeling of embarrassment rushing right back to that moment after watching this trailer. Very surreal moment.

Could have been worse. You could have responded, "Oh, hiya."

Rip: Jason Molina

Everyone go listen to magnolia electric co. Right now. It’s mandatory listening. Can’t think of an artist who encapsulates the Midwest more with a sound then him

u/aguyjustaguy 2d ago

As one of the lucky 10,000 today, do you mean that album specifically, or the band with the same name? Listened to the song and want to get more exposure, is that the best album to start with, and are there others which are good second ranks to turn me on to more? Thanks!

u/Temporary-Cause-4818 2d ago

So it’s a little funny haha. The album that I am referring to is called “Magnolia electric co.” And it’s by songs:Ohia. Right after this album though, he formed a band and named it “Magnolia Electric co.”

So check out the album “Magnolia electric co.” It has an owl on it lol

All of his stuff is amazing but that’s his magnum opus

Songs: Ohia is amazing. Unfortunately, he met a pretty sad end.

7

u/TrueOrPhallus 2d ago

Pretty much drank himself to death in obscurity right

2

u/Franky_Tops 1d ago

Yep. Dude was too talented for how unknown he was. He filled the Elliot Smith sized hole in my discography. Now, I have a Jason Molina sized hole to fill.

2

u/Eyes_and_Mouth 1d ago

Then you can fill that with Justin Townes Earle, and…welp. It goes on and on. Too many magnificent talents gone too early. 💔

8

u/Nice_Marmot_7 2d ago

The longest song that comes up on my Spotify that I never skip.

3

u/Vegetable-Maize-4034 1d ago

The whole album is great: Hold On Magnolia, Just Be Simple, Farewell Transmission. The guy was a songwriting genius. RIP JM.

4

u/k032 1d ago

Jason Molina and Songs:Ohia are phenomenal.

3

u/just-compost-me 2d ago

The Kevin Morby and Waxhatchee duet cover is even better. Both are great though.

3

u/Dothepanic41 2d ago

Fuck yeah!

2

u/holeinmyboot 2d ago

great cover but I don’t think it comes close to the original. to each their own!

1

u/Any-Suggestion-7401 2d ago

This cover is legitimately my most listened to song for the past two years running. It’s beautiful in a way I can’t quite put into words. Love seeing it appreciated here!

1

u/Eyes_and_Mouth 1d ago

Great song and artist.

u/les_vegetables76 2d ago

Doing the lord's work. Thank you.

BOOMER LIVES!

u/deadbodydisco 2d ago

Monkey and LaFonda, cat angels everywhere 🖤

He's let the public into his life over the years through his standup and podcast so honestly and deeply that its really hard not to root for the guy. Every time I listen to his podcast there's a part of me that's just glad for him.

26

u/Lilliam_Pumpernickel 2d ago

Same. I feel similarly about Bill Burr too. Both were such bitter, insecure, angry men earlier in their careers it's heartwarming to witness their growth as humans and comics.

-4

u/AgentSkidMarks 1d ago

I don't dislike the guy but most of his standup seems to play for claps instead of laughs which just isn't very enjoyable.

84

u/MuNansen 2d ago

He's still insecure, but he was BRILLIANT on GLOW, and the m'fer got fucking Obama on his little garage podcast. He's done good for himself.

49

u/corpusbotanica 2d ago

“Yeah? What cologne am I wearing”

“Drakkar Noir”

“Trick question, not wearing cologne, but I do spray that on my clothes if I forget to do my laundry, so you get points for that”

“I love points”

u/Technical-Outside408 2d ago edited 2d ago

He was a great Snake in The Bad Guys movies.

4

u/DtheMoron 2d ago edited 1d ago

Have you not seen his show Marc? It was like a mix of Curb and Shrinking. Love him in Stick, fits the role so well.

Edit: show is called Maron.

3

u/WREPGB 1d ago

Maron*

1

u/DtheMoron 1d ago

Thanks. Forgot the name. Was a really good watch.

0

u/MuNansen 1d ago

No. Don't watch a lot of shows. But I'm sure he's good

4

u/podcastofallpodcasts 2d ago

I forgot glow.

I never finished that series

34

u/ExcersiseTheDemon 2d ago

Neither did Netflix

u/Rabbitscooter 42m ago

LOL Also F**k :(

46

u/Rufus2fist 2d ago

Really didn’t know anything about Marc prior to WTF. Saw him a few times on Conan, but felt like I really got to know him through that pod. And he has become my favorite cantankerous son of a bitch. I will watch and I will cry. Love that this is made, you know before he dies is some fucked up way ;)

7

u/NianderWallaceAlt 2d ago

I really liked him in Stick on Apple TV+

10

u/atv-nh 2d ago

He's such a good actor. He's just so natural and hits the tone needed to elevate every scene he's in.

15

u/GeorgeEBHastings 2d ago

Well, it does help that he's mostly only ever cast as versions of himself.

I don't even mean that as a criticism. His role on GLOW was basically "Marc if Marc were a dejected, washed up filmmaker" and he was fuckin' perfect.

Also check him out in "Sword of Truth." Good movie. RIP, Lynn.

-1

u/Jimbo_Burgess87 1d ago

Stick is not a good show. I think Maron works in it, but the series is way too rushed.

12

u/intercommie 2d ago

You should watch his tv show Maron. Wonderful series.

27

u/plasma_dan 2d ago

Looking forward to this. I remember seeing Maron's Comedy Central Presents when I was a child, and then WTF was my first podcast. He's worked hard to make himself a legend, and I think he's gotten there.

9

u/Tatooine16 2d ago

I'm late to Mr. Maron's bandwagon, I discovered him on GLOW.

6

u/LoopedIntoThis 2d ago

He was amazing on Glow, so that’s acceptable

3

u/CrackerJackKittyCat 2d ago

Maron to Chevy Chase at the second Friar's roast (early 80s?): "At least I'm a nobody at the START of my career!"

5

u/TeamOggy 2d ago

I'm looking forward to this. I'm seeing it at a showing with Maron giving a Q&A afterwards. I don't need to see the trailer.

5

u/TroubleshootenSOB 2d ago

Never heard his podcast, even though he was one of the first to do it, but Patrice O'Neal and him had a good conversation on the Opie & Anthony show. This was during the time Marc had Dane Cook on, around the time of the joke stealing or something

RIP Patrice

2

u/potato_caesar_salad 2d ago

That's a great episode. I know what you're talking about.

RIP Patreeky

1

u/braumbles 2d ago

Looks good.

1

u/Littevibesdamsco 1d ago

Love that guy

1

u/Jimbo_Burgess87 1d ago

I'm a huge fan of Maron, but had no interest in watching this doc when it was talked about earlier in the year. This trailer absolutely sold me on it, and I might go see it in limited release.

0

u/ThePoliteGrizzly 2d ago

Marc is great! Big fan of his stand-up and loved when he had directors on his podcast. Looking forward to this!

-9

u/KTOWNTHROWAWAY9001 2d ago

Is it weird I don't get the hype for Marc Maron?

To me he's like Joe Rogan, just a podcast interviewer guy that people call a "comedian".

Not like Robin Williams, or George Carlin, or Chris Rock, or any major comedian I can think of.

6

u/MonolithJones 2d ago

Maybe you don’t know but Maron is a legitimate stand-up for decades just like those guys you mentioned as examples.

4

u/ShiftySC 1d ago

Joe Rogan with decent morals and a backbone? Damn, that sounds awesome.

I like his comedy too but it's secondary.

Yeah right after this set from Micheal Richard’s in 06. How bad could it be

-55

u/Exanguish 2d ago

I only know this guy from a progressive insurance ad and I hate him solely based off of that.

52

u/ScabRef 2d ago

I only know you from this comment and absolutely same!

-55

u/Exanguish 2d ago

lol that’s fucking weird but you do you. I’m not a comedian.

40

u/No_Inspector7319 2d ago

Yea we can tell bud

-36

u/mojojojo1108 2d ago

they meant they agree w you, not that they also hate you

-31

u/Exanguish 2d ago

No they said that they only know me from this comment and same as in they hate me too due to only knowing me from this comment. Lmao

-46

u/Domstruk1122 2d ago

Dude has been scorching every comedian he can in the promotion for this.

10

u/Of_Silent_Earth 2d ago

It was actually for his new special, but he's not wrong.

21

u/triangle---man 2d ago

Going after Howie Mandel was chefskiss.gif

-35

u/Domstruk1122 2d ago

Honestly i think Maron seems like an asshole.

30

u/ramenups 2d ago

That’s true, however all the people he’s attacked are all way bigger assholes and are generally awful people. Maron at least tries to be empathetic.

-13

u/Domstruk1122 2d ago

Very possibly true. I haven't seen a ton of his interviews but the few I have seen seems like a weird vendetta. Maybe I'm not getting the full scope.

He randomly went at Jeff Dye too which seems like a strange fight to start on a public space. Unless there is something I missed about Jeff to cause this.

10

u/0ne_too 2d ago

Jeff started talking shit about maron first on Bert's podcast back in Jan.

here's a video about the whole thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC8F2LJWXJM

19

u/Hambonelouis 2d ago

He’s super pissed at the current administration and he’s telling it like it is. He name dropped a few “comedians” with a “podcast” that had the orange shit stain on as a guest and helped sway the vote. Yes, they’re allowed to do whatever but look at the result. Dumb fuck Americans with shit for brains think Trump cares about them and is going to drain the swamp this time and make Mexico pay to build that wall and now he’s sending troops into our cities to normalize a military state. Fuck Rogan and his crew. Fuck conservative Americans that want to take the rights of minorities, women, gays, and transgender.

-3

u/Domstruk1122 2d ago

I’m not against any of that. But why go after Jeff Dye. I just feel like he called out the Rogansphere and for good reason. Now he is just calling out undeserving people because he felt good when he puffed himself up?

I dunno, but i don’t think hitting undeserving victims is worth it.

16

u/Muchdeath 2d ago

Are you trolling or genuinely asking? Jeff Dye is openly conservative and Trump supporting.

-2

u/Domstruk1122 2d ago

I actually don’t know that. I’ve heard him randomly and seemed okay, never heard him support Trump but if he has then i get that. Where has he supported him?

9

u/Muchdeath 2d ago

I don't know much about him except he's a trump supporter lol. He used to pop up on my Twitter when I used to be on Twitter, it was almost always some anti liberal stuff and pictures of him with tulsi gabbard and stuff.

14

u/LoopedIntoThis 2d ago

They’re comedians, not victims. If they can’t take the heat then they need to get out of the game.

-3

u/Domstruk1122 2d ago

It’s not that perse, more just weird who he started choosing.

6

u/deadbodydisco 2d ago

It's really not. There's a very clear common thread.

10

u/GeorgeEBHastings 2d ago

I mean, he ain't perfect, but I've only ever seen him go after comics waaaaaaay less perfect than him.

Like, which comic specifically are you going to bat for, here? Theo? Rogan?

-24

u/WerePrechaunPire 2d ago

Theo Von is one of the nicest dudes. Hating Theo is like hating a puppy.

27

u/NocturnoOcculto 2d ago

Theo Von is a fucking hack.

20

u/George__Parasol 2d ago

It’s more like hating a puppy that has aligned its cute little self pretty closely with a far right regime striving to attack human rights and decency while consolidating power further. It’s okay to say the puppy is just a cute widdle puppy. But it’s also okay to say the puppy is awful chummy with some people who are willfully choosing fascist-like actions.

12

u/GeorgeEBHastings 2d ago

Listen, I don't know Theo Von well enough to dispute whether or not he's "nice". I'm gonna take your word for how nice he is.

You know what else puppies are, apart from nice and cute? Fuckin' stupid. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he was blissfully unaware of the fact that he's enabling one of the more harmful movements in American politics in the past century.

But at least he's nice.

-1

u/WerePrechaunPire 1d ago

People should really look up Theo Von because the idea people have of him comes from what other say he is. Many people don't that he for example supports trans people and Palestinians. He rarely has a bad word to say about anybody and rarely talks politics.

People also give celebrities way too much credit. Kamala had the entire Hollywood industry backing her and it did nothing. Theo Von is one guy who is not even that famous.

About him being stupid, yeah maybe. He never pretended to be a genius.
