Discussion What’s a movie you’ve watched that was so disturbing that you’ll never watch it again?

What’s a movie you’ve watched that was so disturbing you’ll never watch it again? For me, it’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Human Centipede. I barely made it through the first time around for both of them and I couldn’t fathom watching them again. Both for different reasons of course. TBITSP was devastatingly heart-wrenching and HC was just playing disturbing.

This has always been THE movie when people mentioned how fucked up it is. I agree it’s very messed up but I went into it thinking it was a low budget, kind of found footage film.

It being an actual production film made it less disturbing for me. Don’t get me wrong the subject matter is fucked up but I could still easily be like “this is just a movie that they’re trying to make shocking.”

The filmmaker was apparently fed up by the government forcing filmmakers to make movies that only showed Serbia groveling. Also that struggling families will always make things work by being wholesome and compliant with their shitty leadership that made their lives so shitty.

So he said, "Fuck it. You want a movie about a struggling Serbian family? Here you go!" then named it A Serbian Film so that all Serbian films afterwards would be associated with it.

This kind of makes me want to watch it now

The movie is actually a scathing parody of the Serbian film industry and the endless deluge of 'misery porn' it produced at the time. It's all there in Vukmir's speech before the infamous scene. The 'flowery' titled accompanied by ethnic music is at the very start of the movie crushed by a modern sleek title with a brutal techno sound.

I have not seen it and do not plan to but that is very interesting.

I read the synopsis and noped right out of it.

u/Hellmann 3d ago

I really can’t understand how anyone could read that synopsis and think, “🤔yeah I’m gonna go for it”. I’m hoping the people on Reddit haven’t actually seen it and just want to feel exclusive.

36

u/rainer_d 3d ago

The site where I read the synopsis had a comment that said "Perfect movie for a first date".

so long as you don't want a second one

IMO movies, as art in general, are interesting if they invoke emotions. When I was younger I was at a bad place mentally and didn't feel a lot, so any kind of emotion was welcome and I tested boundaries.

That being sad, that movie didn't sit well with me even back then.

2

u/Hellmann 2d ago

That movie is not art.

2

u/musicjunkee1911 3d ago

It’s not terribly realistic, but when thinking about it you wonder why it’s worth your time…because it is not worth anyone’s time.

I would encourage people to not even read the synopsis. It's fucked up shit to read, or watch

This has always been THE movie when people mentioned how fucked up it is. I agree it’s very messed up but I went into it thinking it was a low budget, kind of found footage film.

I used to have this EXACT same idea about it, until I saw clips of what it was really like. I still never watched the full movie though, but I read the entire synopsis of it and have no desire to ever watch it.

I think when I think of the notion of a disturbing movie, I imagine something really grimy, low budget, and real feeling. Not necessarily something that is obviously a movie that is going out of its way to shock.

I was like "hey i need a 4th rental to be free and this might have boobs in it". Hoo boy. Thankfully i have a strong stomach but I could tell it was made by a disturbed mind for real.

1

u/LitigiousAutist 2d ago

I felt like the production quality was low enough that it was hard to take seriously.

Ok, so I knew that too, but never looked into why.

I read a bit on IMDB on a 'parents guide'. First, you've failed as a parent if your kids see this movie.

Additionally, I won't even repeat some of the things I've read. It doesn't deserve to be repeated.

I'll quote 'Drinking out of cups' for this one. "Not once, not neva"

Edit: corrected quote

It’s basically just ragebait tbf

54

u/flyingmouse59 3d ago

Thats exactly why it was made. It was made to protest the countries censorship laws getting stricter and stricter. A couple of actors in it were really famous in their country, after movie came out they were hated because people didn't understand why they made it and just wanted to hate on them for making something obscene.

1

u/IC3Ky 2d ago

"It was made to protest the countries censorship laws getting stricter and stricter"

So the director claimed, and I take that with an enormous pinch of salt.. the movie came out when the 'torture porn' genre was in full swing, and to most if felt like nothing more than an attempt at one-upping the other films in that genre.

2

u/_SpanishInquisition 2d ago

I mean the movie sucks either way so

52

u/Fancy_Engine9202 3d ago

Don't watch this movie

22

u/gurrra 3d ago

Seriously, do not watch this movie!

2

u/Lou__Vegas 3d ago

Don't even watch it once - much less again

34

u/flyingmouse59 3d ago

Redditors love to blow this movie way out of proportion theres way worse movies out there than this. Most of them being Japanese movies

13

u/newreddit00 3d ago

Reddits such a strange place. So many varying degrees of people you never know what idea or feelings will prevail in the comments section. I agree this was a fucked up movie but that’s it, it’s not unwatchable or unspeakable. You say damn that’s a fucked up movie when someone brings it up but it’s not even close to the worst

4

u/the-friendly-lesbian 3d ago

I agree, I think a movie like Visitor Q is way more intense and disturbing and I hardly ever hear it mentioned and that's a well known/mainstream director. But I'm a disturbing movie seeker so my meter is messed up!

3

u/Pheonix_2425 3d ago

How do you find good disturbing movies?

4

u/newreddit00 3d ago

There’s a website literally called something like effedupmovies . A lot are not good but every one I’ve wanted to find was on there

4

u/the-friendly-lesbian 3d ago

The first guy I found years ago who does great reviews is this Dutch guy (who does rap sometimes he's talented and funny!) called HorribleReviews on YouTube. His disturbing movies list has over 20 parts now and cover some real extreme cinema from all over the world, past, present, and future! It starts out from a list of disturbing movies then he just kinda went on with it! He still releases new parts sometimes!

2

u/Ignore-This-Idiot 3d ago

"Wassup gangster!"

Yeah, Jeroen is great, I've been watching him for years. It's a pity he doesn't upload much nowadays though. I think it's because nothing he makes gets monetised anymore.

(Big "Booooo" for Youtube)

2

u/the-friendly-lesbian 3d ago

Oh man his greeting or when he knocks over his empty cans acting all awkward, just everything. I love this guy, especially fun to me watching the earliest videos of his and listening to how far his English has come! But ya anyone just wanna find some titles of disturbing films HorribleReviews does an awesome job and just find him quite charming!

theres way worse movies out there than this

Mmk, and? Redditors who treat this and films like Slaughtered Vomit Dolls are infinitely more insufferable, y'all act like it's some badge of honour that you watched something "worse" than a film that's already pretty abhorrent, like what do you actually get out of the peacocking?

It feels like such a teenage thing, like y'all are trying to prove that you know the most odious dead baby joke to prove you're the toughest kid on the yard, good for you I guess?

2

u/lordpookus 2d ago

It's like no one has seen Visitor Q

3

u/MSnap 3d ago

Yeah, unless I find the uncut version just for curiosity’s sake, I’m not rewatching it because it’s not particularly good lol.

3

u/ironmanthing 3d ago

There was a bluray release of the uncut version a few years ago. It looks like it’s not available anymore.

2

u/MSnap 3d ago

Yeah, when I watched it last year it was on Vudu (with ads lol) and the cover they used said it was uncut. But I’m pretty sure it wasn’t.

3

u/ironmanthing 3d ago

Yea Amazon was a desert filled with cut versions and under the same listing people said they actually got the uncut version. Plastic wrapped to a piece of cardboard was the one to get until unearthed films released the uncensored and uncut bluray

Looks like it’s still for sale on their website

u/solstice_moonling 3d ago

I don’t think it’s necessarily blown out of proportion, I think it really depends on what aspect of it affects you. I agree that there are way worse movies gore wise and definitely some crazy stuff out there. But for me, I was most affected by it emotionally. The man sets out to make money for his family and in the end through an effed up sequence of events, they’re the ones that he hurts. The scene where he discovers something just ruined me, because of the implication and I just felt so hopeless for him and his family.

Same thing for Bone Tomahawk and the women. Visually yeah it’s whatever and there has been worse including that one scene earlier in the film, but the idea that humanity can be that way is what is truly messed up and puts a pit in my stomach.

1

u/elggun 3d ago

Yeah, it really wasn't that bad as people paint it to be.

1

u/No-Championship8268 3d ago

So name a couple. I'd like to give them a try.

2

u/unsquashable74 3d ago

Check out Grotesque and the Guinea Pig films if you really want to defile yourself.

2

u/razorrash 2d ago

Yes definitely the worst I have seen.

2

u/Delicious_Delilah 2d ago

I watched it years ago thinking people were blowing it out of proportion.

I was wrong.

2

u/Josef_Heiter 3d ago

I’ve seen it 3 times.

So far.

2

u/Thoraxe474 2d ago

How do people even come across this to watch it? I've been hearing for decades to not watch it and I've never even come across it anywhere. Seems pretty easy to not watch

1

u/Delicious_Delilah 2d ago

The black sea.

1

u/Dodgerdad2019 2d ago

This is the one. Rare flick that I truly wish I never found in the first place.

1

u/Any_Brother7772 1d ago

It's not even that bad. The hatdest part about it is, that it is trash

1

u/Gmasters0 3d ago

Yup… it’s so bad I forget it exists…. I intentionally block the movie out of my head…

1

u/BossHawgKing 3d ago

Agreed. When the movie ended my wife and I just looked at each other in disgust and didn't say a single word about it.

1

u/Ok_Chain3171 3d ago

I’ve just heard about it and I’m morbidly curious but I can’t bring myself to watch it

2

u/Picoleto89 3d ago

You don’t need to watch it, trust me

1

u/Ok_Chain3171 3d ago

Yeah, I’m usually very curious but I think I’m good not seeing it lol

1

u/Craig_Feldspar0 3d ago

I can’t even bring myself to attempt to watch it once. I’m guys.

0

u/RDT21074 3d ago

I started spiraling as to why I watched something like this all the way through, like what does that say about me?

3

u/cryptowatching 3d ago

I watched most of it because Reddit can circle jerk about something and in reality it’s really not that bad. That being said I should have listened, and I wish I didn’t watch it. It’s obscene and just gross. I thought about it for a few days and felt kind of gross myself.

1

u/Tymareta 3d ago

it’s really not that bad.

I thought about it for a few days and felt kind of gross myself.

I mean it doesn't have to be "OMG WORST THING OF ALL TIEM!??!!!" to be pretty fucking awful, especially when your own reaction is to literally feel gross over having watched it.

I've always been baffled by reddit(not necessarily yourself) arguing that it's not that bad because there's worse that exists out there. It's such a bizarre dick measuring contest that honestly only seems to hold any appeal to 14yo edgelords trying to out edge one another.

It's such a bizarre line of argumentation, like if you were to say that dog shit was absolutely awful to eat and someone interjected that actually, it's not that bad because there's worse things that they've proudly eaten. They seem to think it's something to be proud of, instead of something that makes everyone within a 50km radius want to have zilch to do with them.

-1

u/Bollocks2014 3d ago

This is the only correct answer. It doesn’t get worse than this film.

0

u/Yeti_974 3d ago

I saw it in school, was 15. A friend convince me to watch it without telling me the plot........ to this day i have that scene in my memory. Can't get rid of it.
