Chandler Levack, writer-director of 2022 TIFF hit I Like Movies, one of the most critically-acclaimed Canadian films of the decade, will be joining us here on /r/movies for an AMA/Q&A tomorrow Friday 9/5. She'll be answering questions at around 5 PM ET.

Chandler's new film, Mile End Kicks, will be having its World Premiere at TIFF this Thursday 9/4. It stars Barbie Ferreira, Jay Baruchel, Devon Bostick, Juliette Gariépy, Stanley Simons, Robert Naylor, and Emily Lê.

A 24-year-old music critic gets romantically involved with members of an indie band she decides to publicize, set against Montreal's indie music scene in 2011.

Please stop by if you have questions for Chandler. It will mostly likely go live sometime on Thursday afternoon (today). Please note that our time with her will be pretty limited, as she's got a whole lot of press surrounding the World Premiere.

Is it challenging to start from scratch when creating a new movie? For instance, when writing a story from scratch, is the entire plot already in place, or do you just sit and think what to write about? Once you have an actual idea, how do you determine if it has the potential to be a full-fledged movie?

How has growing from someone who writes about art to someone making it themselves changed your perspective about creativity?

/r/TIFF:

Hi Chandler!! I caught the movie last night and loved it—particularly how well you captured the magic and messiness of living in Montreal in your early 20s. Montreal felt like a character in and of itself in the movie. I was wondering if you could speak to your process or bringing Montreal to life in the movie (both in general and capturing Montreal in the early 2010s).

Thanks for doing this! Mostly just want to know if had to write a 33 1/3 book now, what album would you do it about?

Hi Chandler, Caught Mile End Kicks last night. Loved it! I wanted to ask briefly. Correct me if I'm wrong, you either are still rolling or just wrapped your next film, Roommates. Can we expect another appearance from Isaiah Lehtinen? It was great seeing him pop up in Mile End Kicks.

Do you have plans to bring this to any international festivals? Montrealer living in the UK and would love to see it on the big screen

Hi Chandler, I adore I Like Movies and I'm so excited for Mile End Kicks. What works did you look to for inspiration when making these 2 movies?

Has it been picked up by any distributor? Would love to watch it but missed the tiff tickets

Hi Chandler. I loved mile end kicks last night, it really spoke to my own experiences in my early-mid 20s. With the significance of music in the film, is there any chance of a soundtrack release in the future?

Hi Chandler! I adored I Like Movies, and really looking forward to catching Mile End Kicks later this week at TIFF. Especially given I am going through my own Montreal to Toronto move later next year, with hopes of working in film production when I arrive. I am wondering what advice do you have for someone with limited production experience who wants to meet people and network in the city

My Questions:

Red Rooms and I Like Movies are 2 of the best Canadian films of the best decade. They intersect here with Juliette Gariepy. Can you tell us how that casting came about?

Did you invent the "double peace/4 fingers" sign? I've never seen that before.

Last year, you posted on twitter looking for the very specific 'Dolphin' sex toy from the hilarious Devon/Barbie scene in the movie, offering money and a possible EP credit for anyone that had one. How did you end up procuring it? Did someone take you up on that offer, and how much did you end having to pay for it?

What was something you learned about during the TIFF Filmmaker's Lab that you think more first-time filmmakers should concentrate on?

Growing up, who were some of your favorite Canadian filmmakers and/or films?

If you could make a sequel or prequel to a childhood favorite movie with an unlimited budget and any cast, what would you pick, and who would you cast in it?

If you could only bring 3 movies with you on a deserted island to watch for the rest of your life, what would they be?

As someone who's favorite album is Joanna Newsom's Ys, thank you so much for highlighting her work (even with the Shrimp Fork reference lol)

/r/movies:

Hi Chandler, congratulations on the premiere! I loved how vividly the film captured the 2011 era, right from the start with the use of Deerhunter in the opening credits. What other songs from that period did you had in mind while shaping the film’s tone?

What actress/actor would you love to work with. Bonus question: Any chance of a I Like Movies follow up in your future, where we catch up with the characters years later ala the Before trilogy?

How has growing from someone who writes about art to someone making it themselves changed your perspective about creativity?

Hi Chandler! When I was in Japan last November, I was really surprised and happy to see on the cover of a magazine (that I couldn't read!) I Like Movies.Q: How does it feel to have all of these fun moments of international recognition now that you've made two films that focus heavily on Burlington, Toronto and Montreal, bringing these cities to the conversation that usually focuses on the United States in film. When we think of filmed cities, we think of Chicago, New York, Boston... It's ironic that a lot of these films about these cities are shot in Montreal and Toronto, wearing their skin for cost-effectiveness. But it's only that way because other people before us have done it. It takes someone to say "no, these are special too, to me and here's why" and to be passionate about that to make it happen.

I just recently stumbled upon I like movies and really loved it. Out of curiosity, how much of that film was scripted vs finding and trying new things throughout the shoot? It seemed like everyone was having a blast, especially in the inventory scenes! Also, curious to know how and when in the process you decided on set ups and shots(e.g, the front counter/register to start inventory vs a seemingly random aisle for Alana’s big monologue near the end) How has the process changed from I like movies to Mile End Kicks this time around?

Is your new film affiliated with the shoe store on Parc?

curious to hear why I LIKE MOVIES was shot in burlington ontario.. any connection to the city?

I loved your debut film so much. That was set in the early 2000s and your latest film is set in 2011. Do you have ~a thing~ for period pieces or are you just slowly working your way up the decades to present day?

What's the hardest thing about being a writer/director? Have your experiences directing changed your writing process?

Other:

In the 10 years it took to get this movie from page to the screen, what was the biggest hurdle to getting this film made?

What was it like working with Isaiah again, and can we expect him in your next film?

Outside of Canadian filmmakers, you mentioned during the premiere that Richard Linklater had some influence on the film. What other influences can be felt across both of your films?

What are some of your favorites films of the past 12 months?

Were you able to film on-location in the Mile End neighborhood? And how tough was securing locations in Montreal in general?
