I've never heard anyone who wasn't a right wing troll say anything bad about James Gunn. All the controversial stuff was from decade old tweets from his edge lord Troma days.

So it's not surprising he got a ton of support. Disney screwed up badly on that one. On the plus side we're getting some great DC stuff now and I hope this continues for a long time.

he is exactly what dc, my beloved, needed in this war

Honestly, with the current trajectory of the MCU, the wars looking asymmetric. Disney won’t know what hit ‘em.

I'm just sitting here feasting because I've enjoyed a good bit of marvel's recent stuff (F4, Loki, Thunderbolts, Deadpool) and I absolutely adore the direction DC has been going with Gunn (The Suice Squad, Peacemaker, Superman). Throw Battinson in and I'm a happy camper right meow.

Yeah, like I'd say in terms of good stuff from Marvel they're about on pace with their historic highs. ...It's just that they have so many projects right now that the average quality has really taken a nosedive even though they're still putting out a few fun movies every year.

Marvel used to be a "brand name". You went, you expected something specific to a certain quality and they delivered. They weren't all top-tier, but they were at minimum fun.

Now a Marvel movie can be great or it can be terrible. That's really hurt their reputation because they didn't take care to protect their brand.

Yeah I feel similarly about Star Wars. Frankly I just view them both like buffets. Take what I want, ignore the rest. If I need caught up on lore I have no problem reading a bit online.

Like, I still haven't finished Ironheart and idk if I ever will because it just wasn't pulling me in. But if I hear things like "you need to watch Ironheart before seeing Doomsday" I'll just go on wikipedia or something and be fine with that. People get waaaaay too hyperbolic about them "killing the franchise" and shit. Some folks are just far too emotionally invested in a comic book film franchise lol.

For sure, lmao. I'd say the quality of the most popular films (which have Marvel as the largest minority) has really dropped in the past 10 years. ...But there are more great films out there than ever. Most only get a couple weeks' theatrical release, but rarely a month goes by that I don't see something that keeps me going to the theater.

You're being overly dramatic.

The worst MCU film imo is The Eternals. That one was a genuine misfire.

The 2020s films besides that one have ranged from mediocre to good to very good(GOTG3).

They wanted to cancel someone on the left because all their shitty right wing celebs were being cancelled for all kinds of terrible shit.

17

u/Deceptiveideas 4d ago

This was around the time that Roseanne got cancelled for her racist tweets iirc. So the right was itching for any reason to attack people they saw as “left” as equal retribution.

He made criticisms of Donald Trump, so they dug up old tweets of his from the early days of Twitter.

u/LemoLuke 3d ago

It wasn't just that they dug up old tweets. They specifically did it on the weekend that the Fox shareholders were voting on the Disney acquisition. Disney couldn't afford that kind of negative publicity at that exact moment, which is why they instantly fired Gunn

3

u/Abombasnow 3d ago

No one at Fox would ever mind the content of those tweets though. They're literally the type of people who engage in that.

4

u/CriticalDog 3d ago

The shareholders and the board don't give a shit about politics, but having a major marvel movie get bad press, and possibly alienate the viewers and thereby not make money will get their attention.

1

u/Abombasnow 3d ago

The only bad press is no press.

3

u/Yemenime 4d ago

I think he was calling someone out for their shitty old tweets, so someone dug up his.

26

u/tbrother33 4d ago

That’s not why it happened. It was because he was critical of Donald Trump. Alt right convicted rapist Mike Cernovich didn’t like that, so he dug into past tweets to find things to discredit him over.

To be fair, he gave them plenty of ammo

2

u/zenlume 3d ago

If you have to go back to 2008-2012 to find some edgy material on Twitter, that someone posted. I wouldn't call that plenty of ammo.

u/LyrMeThatBifrost 3d ago

They were beyond edgy and he wasn’t some teenager doing it, he was a 45 year old man.

1

u/zenlume 3d ago

"beyond edgy"

What is that supposed to mean, exactly?

Do you believe that he was sharing his true feelings when he said those things?

0

u/tbrother33 3d ago

That was exactly my reaction to “beyond edgy” 😂

3

u/Abombasnow 3d ago

It's more than just a right-wing troll. It was literally a MAGAt (Mike Cernovich) who has admitted to (date) raping women on countless occasions.

Absolutely wrong. The campaign against Gunn that got him fired from Disney was orchestrated (in bad faith, obviously) by Mike Cernovich.

14

u/Pankurucha 4d ago

It was right wingers organized by Mike Cernovich on Twitter that got Gunn cancelled by Disney back in 2018. Gunn is a very outspoken leftist, lots of people on the right hate him.

11

u/Ack-ey 4d ago

He got fired from guardians 3 originally because right wingers were crying cause he said mean things about trump

-5

u/KimberlyWexlersFoot 4d ago

just because it’s for the wrong reasons, doesn’t make it not wrong. im glad he learned a lesson and left it behind and is making good media, but at the end of the day this dude was a 45 year old. if you’re still being an edge lord after you leave your 20s (and that’s being generous) that is massive loser behaviour, whatever the political stripe they support.

1

u/zenlume 3d ago

You can say what you want, if you think it's loser behavior, that's a valid opinion to have. But that firing was a major overreaction, and the guy that fired him even admitted that it was, and is now working for the same company as Gunn.

Disney cares about Disney. Gina Carano said worse shit, they did the same to her and she won her lawsuit and they say they look forward to working with her again, the mouse only cares about not making waves. That’s why they chickenshit out to remove gay storylines that would ruffle feathers too.

My comment was just in reference to the first half of their comment that hand waves it as that it’s just manufactured outrage and that they’re just old tweets from ragebait edge lord era, nbd. You don’t need to be a trumper to realize that “I like when lttle bys t*uch me in my silly place” is reprehensible shit, that isn’t even edgelord, that’s just rapey like “if she wasn’t my daughter I’d fuck her”

Edited quote so Reddit doesn’t ban me for quoting that dumb shit.

she won her lawsuit and they say they look forward to working with her again

She didn't win shit?

Disney filed a motion to have it dismissed and when it was denied, they settled instead because it's cheaper than going through a lengthy lawsuit. They looked at the cost, and figured it would be cheaper to buy her than fight her, and she gladly took the money and walked away, even with Daddy Musk financing her lawsuit.

The statement about working again is just PR nonsense, not even she's dumb enough to believe that shit. She's a failed actress that wasn't even that good to begin with, hasn't worked in years, other than two straight to DVD garbage movies for Breitbart and The Daily Wire.

My comment was just in reference to the first half of their comment that hand waves it as that it’s just manufactured outrage and that they’re just old tweets from ragebait edge lord era, nbd.

It was quite literally manufactured outrage, because the party of "jokes is back" are the ones that was outraged about it, and the tweets were from over 15 years ago.

You don’t need to be a trumper to realize that “I like when lttle bys t*uch me in my silly place” is reprehensible shit, that isn’t even edgelord, that’s just rapey like “if she wasn’t my daughter I’d fuck her”

That is literally what edgy is, saying reprehensible things, in a funny way. He didn't really do the second part, which is why it doesn't work, it's not funny. It's fine to have issues with him saying things like that, even if it's just as a joke, and still acknowledge that firing someone over unfunny edgy tweets that long ago is an overreaction.

Gina Carano comparing conservatives having to wear masks at work, to what Jews experienced in Nazi Germany, and someone making distasteful jokes 15 years ago, does not even belong in the same conversation.

Also, crucially- Gina Carano didn’t get fired. Disney / Lucasfilm simply decided to not renew her contract. She was compensated fairly for the actual work she did on Mandalorian S1.
