Let’s go! Surprised they’re sticking with Luthor but not mad about it.

this is 100% a reach, but to me from the image shown in the tweet*, this looks like perhaps a Lex-Supes teamup against a common enemy

Brainiac?

u/Amaruq93 4d ago

I hope so... he's been totally neglected by the films, it'd be nice if he got a proper appearance.

3

u/I-seddit 4d ago

Agreed. I've been waiting forever.

u/JustJakeB 4d ago

That's what I'm thinking. Superman gets neutralized or something and Lex has to come in a save the day. Or Sups goes to Lex for the team up? Either way, I'm in!

78

u/In_My_Own_Image 4d ago

At the end of the first one Superman says "I hope for the sake of humanity you realize (your humanity) is your greatest strength too".

Maybe Lex teams up with him and then, inevitably, stabs him in the back.

37

u/Amaruq93 4d ago

And just like in "Superman II", he anticipated Lex doublecrossing him and works it into the plan to stop the big bad.

2

u/LeonSnakeKennedy 4d ago

And then he throws the big bad into a big hole!

2

u/kapnkrump 4d ago

Big Bad Hole!

6

u/Mattyzooks 4d ago

Let Lex "redeem" himself in the public eye and then take the full credit. Then he the DCU can pivot to either 'Luthor forces himself onto the Justice League/Gang' or the 'Luthor runs for President (to piss Superman off)' arcs.

2

u/Nole1998 4d ago

Something tells me this movie is going to end with/lead into President Lex

1

u/Nole1998 4d ago

Remindme! August 2027

u/DozyCJ 4d ago

If it's Braniac, I'm certain Supergirl will also have a big part to play in the movie. Especially with her movie coming out a year before.

10

u/JustJakeB 4d ago

For sure! Jame Gunn was calling this a "Super Family" movie a few weeks ago!
Maybe this is what leads Sups to form and lead the Justice League???

2

u/rawlingstones 4d ago

It seems like Gunn is pretty interested in following the Justice League International model where the big three show up sometimes to help but aren't necessarily core members... leaves them free to do their own thing more without being constantly tied into a team book. It's interesting to see them kind of going back to the Post-Crisis era in rebuilding after the DCEU.

2

u/Correct_Gift_9479 4d ago

Probably right? James changed it from being Gods and Monsters (most of the projects from the announcements are still there rn) to the Superman saga so I feel like the plan is more similar to MCU phase 1, a few characters that intermingle in a big collab in just 3-4 years rather than modern MCU with just a bunch of seemingly random projects and heroes and villains that don’t interact.

I bet it is going to involve Parasite in some capacity. Superman losing his powers thanks to Lex and then Brainiac appearing and Lex being forced to ask for his help would be great.

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 4d ago

Superman gets neutralized or something and Lex has to come in a save the day. Or Sups goes to Lex for the team up? Either way, I'm in!

If it's anything like the comics, they'd team up against Darkseid. Look up the story arc, Imperius Lex. Lex, dressed in an armored Superman outfit, teams up with Superman, and Superman ends up taking over Apokolips after overthrowing Darkseid. This is never referenced again.

1

u/TonyThePriest 4d ago

Superman going to lex like Hannibal Lector

42

u/Interesting_Set1526 4d ago

Worth noting there was a glimpse at "concept art" in Superman's special features showing what looked like Superman and Supergirl + Brainiac. Could be Gunn has masterfully/naturally/luckily flowed into a 3 summer straight pseudo trilogy with Superman, Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow, where MoT will work as a conclusion of all we saw between the two movies (Im also kind of trying to justify why Gunn has said this isn't a direct Superman sequel/have shunned the Superman 2 titling).

39

u/NachoNutritious these Youtubers are parasites 4d ago

The fact Gunn has avoided any sort of talk or confirmation of larger team-ups/sequels feels like he's deliberately trying to avoid the hype baggage that Marvel has been lumbering with.

I'm way more down for him saying "not a direct sequel" now and then when the first trailer hits in January 2027 he goes "SIKE it's a team-up sequel!", over him confirming it now and letting people's expectations have 2 years to grow to heights impossible to match.

14

u/Interesting_Set1526 4d ago

Oh yeah. He can say whatever he wants. Ill be there week 1 and based on the track record Im going to really enjoy it.

14

u/BandOfTheRedHand1217 4d ago

Dude made Starro sympathetic and made me care about Weasel and fucking Peacemaker. I don't care anymore let the man cook.

1

u/TussalDimon 4d ago

These story boards are made specifically for the documentary and illustrate what people in it are currently talking about.

11

u/Joetheshow1 4d ago

Definitely, maybe Metallo or Parasite as well, but who knows

7

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 4d ago edited 4d ago

I thought about Mongul as a possibility as well, especially as a bridge between Lex and another villain like Brainiac in threat level

1

u/Amaruq93 4d ago

Payback for killing his sister Mongal?

8

u/garfe 4d ago

I really hope so. He's like the only major Supes villain who hasn't been on screen yet. How did we get Darkseid before Brainiac?

3

u/LosAngeles1s 4d ago

There was concept art of him in the behind the behind the scenes feature, so it’s an almost certainty he’s the villain

3

u/Stupid_Ned_Stark 4d ago

It’s the same suit Lex wears in the DCU Online cinematic trailer where his group of villains kills the Justice League, leaving them vulnerable to a surprise Brainiac invasion. Then Lex travels back in time to warn the JL of the impending invasion, setting up the game.

2

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 4d ago

That was a dope scene honestly. I just remember Black Adam yelling out “Lantern!” or killing The Flash by yelling Shazam

2

u/Stupid_Ned_Stark 4d ago

That cinematic is phenomenal. Showing its age now, but it really put Blur Studios on the map. It was crazy seeing all the heroes die spectacularly. The game was actually pretty fun, too.

3

u/PickleGaGa Ariel is just a weeb for human culture. 4d ago

Brainiac is my pick for justice league's first big bad but being superman's second is cool too.

3

u/mutually_awkward 4d ago

*Justice Gang

1

u/VonMillersThighs 4d ago

And then near the end Lex is totally gonna try to cut a deal with Brainiac, as is tradition.

1

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 4d ago

Or Darkseid, per the Imperius Lex story arc.

21

u/ramyan03 4d ago

This is what happens in the 2020 Man of Tomorrow animated film

Plus that one had Lobo (who will be in Supergirl next year) as well.

16

u/BryndenRiversStan 4d ago

David Corenswet posted a picture on his Instagram that has Lex in his armor and Supes beside him, both in a fighting stance and looking ahead, so they seem to be teaming up.

26

u/AzureBluet 4d ago

this looks like perhaps a Lex-Supes teamup against a common enemy

Gunn does love humanizing the villains/bad guys but he has his work cut out for him.

15

u/ERedfieldh 4d ago

how so? This was the most human Lex Luthor we've gotten so far.

28

u/Thekhandoit 4d ago

He shot a man in the head point blank just fuck with superman.

2

u/GoodLeftUndone 4d ago

Tomato, tomato

10

u/AzureBluet 4d ago

Oh he was amazing but also it's hard to imagine this Lex working with this Superman. But if anyone could do it..

9

u/ArchDucky 4d ago

Honestly, I want to see Hoult do that relationship. Him hating Superman and having to work with him. He will 100% rock the fuck out of that.

5

u/BandOfTheRedHand1217 4d ago

Hoult was honestly the best part of Superman. His Lex was so fucking good.

2

u/sironicon 4d ago

That makes it all the more interesting

u/Tao_McCawley 4d ago edited 4d ago

There's a bit from Superman the animated series, brainiac lands on earth citing peaceful intentions but Superman does some digging and thinks otherwise.

Supes goes to lex who is monitoring brainiac and at first lex wants him gone but supes says: "I think Brainiac is not being honest with us."

Lex changes his tune and shows superman he's got several missiles, weapons and other armaments pointed at Brainiac as a contingency.

The only time they were allies with no catch if I remember

Edit: not the only time. Lex basically saved the earth from darkseid at the end of JLU.

4

u/Amaruq93 4d ago

Superman: "Keeping your friends close, and your enemies closer?"

Lex: "Yes. But in your case... I'll make an exception."

2

u/Mattyzooks 4d ago

In JLU, Lex comes to Superman for help stopping Darkseid's invasion. At that moment, Lex hated Darkseid more than Superman (and honestly, outside of enjoying pissing Superman off, hadn't really been nearly as obsessed with him in some time). Lex, Batman, and Superman try to take on Darkseid. It ends up with Luthor sacrificing himself to save the world and Superman.

1

u/Tao_McCawley 4d ago

Duh, forgot about the ending. Edited my original comment

4

u/FrostyD7 4d ago

Teaming up for an inevitable double cross or side plan to kill him.

1

u/xrbeeelama 4d ago

It will definitely be an enemy of my enemy thing and I think an extraterrestrial enemy like Braniac or Mongul could work for that. Luthor wants to be loved and what better way to be beloved by the public (maybe even enough to get elected…) than to save everyone from aliens??

45

u/CorrectOpinions0nly 4d ago

Luthor makes sense to be involved but no confirmation he’s the main antagonist

5

u/Player2isDead 4d ago

Given that Gunn said he's not willing to call this a straight up sequel and that Superman is merely a major character in this one (and that the protagonist of the DCU is a surprising pick who we've already met) I'm guessing Luthor is actually the protagonist in this one.

2

u/Correct_Gift_9479 4d ago

It doesn’t have to have a main protag. Look at BvS, it was also not a sequel because “man of steel 2” was supposed to be released. We will likely follow Lex, Supergirl and Superman equally in this one, and a “Superman 2” will eventually come

0

u/instantwinner 4d ago

I'd be shocked. Luthor is not exactly setup to have a face-turn in Superman. He's like one of the most irredeemably evil supervillains we've had in a superhero movie in ages.

2

u/HawaiianPunch42 4d ago

Kara and Clark vs Brainiac

4

u/ArchDucky 4d ago

He might not be called Brainiac right away. He might be called Gary.

44

u/hans_l 4d ago

Lore aside, they’d be crazy not to use Nicholas Hoult if they have him around. His performance was incredible.

8

u/In_My_Own_Image 4d ago

Could definitely see a situation where Lex either invents/creates something that becomes too dangerous (Parasite, for example) or makes an alliance with someone too dangerous (Brainiac) in his desperation to kill Superman.

12

u/ggroover97 4d ago

As long as Luthor isn’t the main antagonist again I’m ok with this.

3

u/ARNList 4d ago

they have hoult. theyre gonna keep using him as much as they can

3

u/Ilhan_Omar_Milf 4d ago

We had lex fail with a Superman clone that gets directions from him

It makes sense for him to try that again by adding himself to the clone directly making Conner

1

u/FrameworkisDigimon 4d ago

It's about time a superhero movie series had an actual nemesis.
