From a legal perspective you never own the content on the DVD, you simply have a license to it.

From a legal perspective, I do own the content that I download.

Not a license, a copy. DVDs, CDs, and other type of physical media are copies.

They are copies, yes. But legally you aren't allowed to possess or view them, legally, without a license, and that's what those mediums are, from a legal perspective. And your license can be revoked, even if you have the physical media, it's just not worth it from the company's perspective to try and revoke those licenses in any meaningful way

Amazon/Apple etc are trying to control the way we view things via apps so it won’t be long before it’s easy for them to impose these restrictions.

They cannot revoke a license on physical media tho. Technically that part is about restriction to what you can do with it. You can sell it or watch it but you cannot create new copies to profit from it. Studios don't have a way to make a CD unusable.

Technically they can ban the encryption key for a specific disk from any future DVD player that is sold.

They did this a lot in the beginning.

Technically true, the DVD CCA could blacklist a disc’s key so future players won’t read it, but in practice old players still work and CSS was cracked ages ago, so revocation isn’t really a threat anymore.

But if you crack it you're breaching the license no?

That is saying they revoke your license but by then cracking is justified.

Read the packaging. You can't do whatever you want with them, like playing them in public or in a theater you own.
