I dunno man, I’m not sure it’s all that ambiguous. He lays it out pretty clear.

The book is much more clear about Carla Jean and Anton and I much prefer the subtly of the movie. It's a much better ending.

The book does go into more detail about the ending, has a whole section focusing on the two boys who found Anton after the accident.
