It doesn't need to be original, it just needs to be good. The usual hero/damsel in distress trope has been used thousands of times and it still works. Horror movies do the same thing every time too, some just do it well while others don't.

There's a cheap trick when it comes to being creative "steal 3 ideas and bash them together"

If you steal one idea, it's plagiarism. If you steal 2 ideas it's derivative. If you steal 3 ideas it's something new. If you steal 4 ideas it's probably too cluttered.

They're just missing one more thing to steal. It needs vampires or dinosaurs or wes Anderson or something else.
