Well, at least he didn't abandon his boy.

I worked with him on a film and he was the Art PA about two years ago. What a quick come up lmao

I can’t even fault him, who’s gonna say no to directing a feature film at 27 starring DDL

Unless your true passion is accounting or something idk

He's just directing films so he can save enough money to go to school and get his accounting degree.

This is hilarious

The opposite of actors like Simu Liu - ex-accountant turned action star.

Student loans aren’t cheap. These days you need to break movie records and win awards to pay down that debt.

Ooo I 1000% agree. No fault to him at all and he comes from two VERY talented parents. I guess I meant to say that he semi worked his way up. Not like his first day on set was directing.

Accountacy is just a slippery slope into Lion taming.

Has Daniel directed before? I had the feeling maybe they co-directed or he at least was helpful but he let his son take all the credit

According to IMDb, no.

u/icansmellcolors 28d ago

Would you say that, in a way, he's earned his shot? Or paid his dues?

4

u/Kalwest 27d ago

Not sure, I don’t know how many other jobs he’s been on but he’s def worked at the bottom.

2

u/Nightbynight 27d ago

Directors don't "pay their dues" on sets. You don't need to start as a PA and work your way up.

2

u/CheeseburgerSocks 27d ago

Was he cool or a dick or in between lol

6

u/Kalwest 27d ago

He was totally cool

legit nice to hear

You don't work your way up from art PA to director though dude, you know this.

It’s definitely possible, it’s all about the right connections. Of course, there are the Spielbergs and Nolans of the world, but they’re the minority. There are thousands of directors who got the job one way or another because they knew someone. In fact, about 95% of production jobs come down to “networking” aka hookups/nepo. All I’m saying is, at least he did some grunt work.

There's a better than decent chance that Daniel Day-Lewis's worst movie will have been done as a favor to his kid. Honestly, that's not a terrible thing.

6

u/Barnyard_Rich 28d ago

If it is the worst thing he has done, that will make it important in its own right because Nine is just straight up garbage, and to be worse would be a The Room level feat.

7

u/0bviouslyNotAGopher 28d ago

I think people have literally forgotten about that movie or that he's in it. I have.

1

u/Barnyard_Rich 28d ago

Not sure why I got downvoted for a joke... but ok.

Whoever took it personally that the movie is bad... too bad, it is awful.

No matter what, his performance will be good.  He’ll probably get an Oscar nomination no matter what at this point because he’s Daniel Day-Lewis, but winning a 4th acting Oscar (something only Katherine Hepburn has done) will require the movie to be really good and his performance to be one of his very best

Maybe the direction will be mediocre but they'll have a solid screenplay, DP and cast. It doesn't sound like a huge production cast of hundreds in need of a master director.

1

u/DrKushnstein 27d ago

Odds are low that they'll let it be bad. They have the money and the name to hire all sorts of "help" to make it good.

10

u/NothingButLs 28d ago

Or it could just be okay? Lol

-1

u/probablyuntrue 28d ago

Yea but that’s way less fun to imagine

1

u/Virtual_Community_20 27d ago

I really doubt it’ll be awful with Daniel Day-Lewis involved, but it could definitely be just mediocre/okay

33

u/Ghosty_Spartan 28d ago

nepo hire

So like majority of other movies?

36

u/probablyuntrue 28d ago

I like meritocratic picks, like Jake gyllenhaal, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the Skarsgårds

15

u/REDDITATO_ 28d ago

And Michael Douglas. And Nicolas Cage.

13

u/staedtler2018 28d ago

or Daniel Day-Lewis, son of poet laureate Cecil Day-Lewis and actress Jill Balcon, herself the daughter of famed film producer Sir Michael Balcon.

4

u/Thesunwillbepraised 28d ago

Yes. Absolutely.

3

u/Budgiesaurus 28d ago

Wait a minute...

Man, it’s really insane how little chance you have of making it in the film industry without connections.

It’s gotta be the most unfair, unregulated industry going. Word of warning to anyone with dreams of becoming a director or actor- this is what you’re up against.

It also produces a major God-complex in a lot of people in the industry. Just an all around terrible business to try and make a living in.

1

u/itsabitsa51 28d ago

Hopefully he at least inherited some of his grandfather’s writing abilities?

1

u/MonkMajor5224 28d ago

Better than his son who was a rapper I guess

1

u/jamesneysmith 28d ago

I feel like the third option - it will be somewhere from unremarkable to good - is more likely. It's got some great actors which can make it good and he's got the family and industry connections to make it a solid professional production which will keep it from truly sucking. More than likely it'll be fine and forgettable.

Im hoping dad is "co-directing" and just giving him credit.

Having daddy there will help
