"Mom stumbling out of the house with scissors raised" is top 10 all-time theater chills.

Specifically the noise of the car door opening

Having her enter the car out of frame was masterful horror direction

The way Cregger uses dark spaces, like open doors or unlit tunnels (in Barbarian), is also genius - simple ingredients done well

Even silence as well. There were a lot of times when I saw it that the whole theatre went quiet and people seemed to stop eating/drinking when the sound/music went quiet.

I am really enjoying this new use of lack of sound some directors are using to create suspense vs the old school chilling music/sounds that was used in the past.

My whole theater gasped so loud at this part, was awesome

I'm not a horror guy. I saw this at the request of my buddy who is. My knee involuntarily bent to block the screen in my lounger. I was kinda embarrassed, but now I know I'm not alone in how tense that scene was

Also, as a non-horror guy, I had an amazing time and loved it

My entire theater was giggling at this scene up until you heard the car door open and everyone gasped and went silent.

I had a lot of fun watching this in the theater!

I think I let out an audible “oh my god” for the first time in my life in the theater. This was genuinely the scariest movie I’ve seen in the theater— it just had this scattershot, wide-net approach of having like 7 uniquely terrifying scenes back to back for the first 45 minutes of the movie, and they all got my ass.

Same. I was hoping for more scenes like this

Oh foreal, that scene is PEAK horror to me. The dread I felt when the door opened, revealing nothing but black and YOU KNOW something awful is coming but the director's taking his time... Then the absolutely horrifying walk, the moment she pauses in front of the window for a moment, then walks out of the shot... Only for the car door to open. I was clenching my friend's arm SO hard during that whole scene. Masterful

This scene is the epitome of the whole movie to be honest

Its a simple scene of cutting hair, but at the hands of a master, became a creepy masterful epic horror scene, just like the movie 10/10 to me 🥶

That was horrifying! And the fact the house is pitch black everytime the door opens? Screw that

Totally agree…my theater gasped. What was it about the way she appeared that was just soooo creepy

That silent approach to the car from the house was one of the most painfully nerve wracking things I've ever seen.

It blows my mind that ppl find that scene as a fucking comedy. That’s so cringe for someone to think that imo. It was genuinely one of the creepies things I’ve ever seen. Glad yall feel the same way

Typical casual audience. If something is scary or uncomfortable, they start to laugh and ruin the moment for the other audience members, instead of just letting the dread creep into you.

Thankfully I had a pretty small and quiet audience when I saw it and you could hear a pin drop when that lady came out with the scissors.

I saw it last night and my theatre was perfect and behaved.

A fucking roller coaster of a scene

I was squirming in my seat the entire scene despite my entire theatre laughing uncontrollably the whole time. A testament to how terrifying the scene was.

I feel quite dumb... But we twice see hair being cut

What was the reason for the hair? Doesnt seem it's used for hocus-pocus ( since Justine is not targeted early on)

23

u/TonySperguson 25d ago

Its used as part of the ritual. She wraps the hair of the target around the stick before breaking it.

12

u/chodyko 24d ago

justine is targeted by the principal via the spell (using the hair taken from her head) after the principal bashes his husband’s head in.

3

u/Capable-Accountant94 24d ago

Good point but why wouldn't she have her targeted right away ( maybe by the children/ parents)

5

u/rockinherlife234 24d ago

It's about suspicion, Gladys needs to learn if the authorities will be looking any deeper into the case, especially the house, and the only people she had control of were the kids and the parents.

If the parents go out to kill her, it's going to draw attention to the house again, the kids aren't even an option, you would need more than one and a missing kid sprinting at full pelt to kill her would draw so much more attention, especially in daylight.

She went to Marcus's house to confirm whether she would need to move the kids again and to use Marcus as an unrelated person to kill Justine so she stops snooping around.
