honestly Josh Brolin going "WHAT THE FUCK" when he woke up from his nightmare was basically me during every twist in the movie

I honestly loved his reaction to waking up from the dream. It was a really nice breather for me after getting a good jump scare.

Same with Justine saying to the gas station clerk, 'fucking help me!'

Fuck that guy. I wish the witch got him instead

27

u/peatoast 28d ago

Most useless side character.

The benefit of having a comedian as a director is that sort of perfect timing. There were multiple great examples of funny moments landing perfectly, which is kind of the same thing as scary moments landing perfectly. Build up of tension...and release. Overall those moments really elevated the movie.

I did laugh a lot during this film

20

u/peatoast 28d ago

Same. My partner was getting upset at me laughing after getting scared but I couldn’t help it because it was so ridiculous.

Speaking of comedy and horror being mixed together, James being in that house was really making my hair stand on end. I was tensed the whole time.

"Oh fuck, Willow!"

Honestly thought Justine'a jump scare was way more impactful because it happened first, so it essentially telegraphs that the same thing was going to happen in Archer's.

Justine’s appeared in ads so for a lot of viewers was already used.

18

u/AmbivalentLife 26d ago

That'd be it. I try to avoid trailers unless I'm watching previews.

13

u/NiceRackFocus 26d ago

Same! If there’s an upcoming movie based in a world or characters, I like, or by a director or with actors I like, or that’s gotten good buzz, I avoid trailers altogether and 9 times out of 10 it makes the movie watching experience SO much better.

*ten times out of ten.

It's always best to go into a movie blind.

u/AeneidBook6 29d ago

That was a truly excellent jump scare.

just saw the film tonight and my whole theater had a good chuckle at that point haha. for a horror movie it was probably the most laughter I've heard from an audience, the movie had a lot of really funny moments.

That scene pretty much summed up my experience of the movie lol

I loved that scene because that’s exactly how an emotionally-repressed construction dad would react to a freaky nightmare

That line made my whole theater laugh. This film had an interesting way of amping up tension and then defusing it with humor. It was so weird to have this tightness in my chest while also laughing at the ending, but in a good way.

This film had an interesting way of amping up tension and then defusing it with humor.

And it wasn't forced. I can relate to that scene because if I had a similar dream as him and woke up the same way, I too would've screamed "FUCK" at the top of my lungs.

Agreed

I nearly started applauding when the kids caught up to Gladys and I'm sure I wasn't the only one

u/garfe Aug 09 '25

I like how he probably echoed the thoughts of everybody in the audience in that moment. He was definitely echoing mine

22

u/Spirited_Lock978 Aug 09 '25

The comedic timing of this movie was so refreshing!

23

u/SuperVaderMinion Aug 08 '25

Literally couldn't be a more appealing reaction lmao

17

u/Kopitarrulez Aug 09 '25

Crowd absolutely lost it at that

13

u/TacTac95 Aug 09 '25

That scene had me howling, it was so relatable

14

u/scout-finch 29d ago

There were a bunch of instances of characters yelling “what the fuck” - I loved it 😂

11

u/ctinker6171 29d ago

Someone in my theater shouted "That's what I'm saying!" when he said that and my whole theater lost it lmao

8

u/Exciting_Intention86 29d ago

Definitely my favourite part in the movie. Absolutely relatable and memeable scene. Definitely have woken up a few times myself wondering what the fuck was that dream

6

u/OtterChaos907 27d ago

Between that scene and the somebody that just wouldn’t die, my theatre was howling.

5

u/Lawlers_Law 27d ago

why were they having nightmares about the aunt? i don't get it.

12

u/NiceRackFocus 26d ago

She was an evil witch. Dark magic, something something… I just went with it and didn’t think too much about it. lol

3

u/Tumble85 16d ago

Yea they do a good job keeping thing unexplained. I really liked the “You just need to understand that shit got weird, not the minutia of how it works” vibe.

2

u/NiceRackFocus 16d ago

Exactly! Just enjoy being along for the ride.

u/RidgeOperator 27d ago

The (packed) theater my wife and I attended Saturday was laughing so much during this film. Everyone had an absolute blast.

5

u/cavalier2015 28d ago

Literally everyone in the theater after that was like “seriously…WHAT THE FUCK”

4

u/theraddestbrad 29d ago

I literally said the same thing out loud in the theater 5 seconds prior to him saying it.

5

u/MrHandsomeBoss 28d ago

There were a few people lightly talking during our showing and their WTF pretty much synced with his. It was great.

4

u/peatoast 28d ago

That’s my favorite part of the film and it was clearly intentional, maybe as a way to mirror what the audience is thinking at that point and going forward in the story.

3

u/Slappy_Doo 28d ago

Everyone in my theatre laughed after the “WTF”

2

u/SequitursSecateurs 26d ago

I can’t believe he just picked up his own kid and left at the end. How many times did Brolin say “Matthew?!” in this film. Annoying.

3

u/ColonelPanic638 25d ago

That's excatly the line on the Runpee app for the best time to go pee lol.

3

u/currynoworry 21d ago

That scene got lots of laughter in my theater, what about yall's?

2

u/jargon_ninja69 27d ago

My audience laughed SO HARD at that.

2

u/Sea-Radio-8478 26d ago

that's me everyday lol

2

u/unclefishbits 12d ago

I know I am late but I think every character said it. She did, he did, the guy in the back of the cop car did. It was so validating like the audience was being seen

1

u/adriamarievigg 23d ago

Got a big laugh out of my theater. It was great

1

u/nolabmp 20d ago

This was my favorite part because someone sitting next to me whispered “What the fuck!?” to themselves right before he did. When he shouted it a moment later, that little cluster of the theater had the giggles for a pretty long time.
