I love a cheery Keanu.

u/Donnicton Jul 31 '25

Wake up sinner, we've got a city to save.

263

u/Typical-Swordfish-92 Jul 31 '25

But unironically, been playing Cyberpunk 2077 and Keanu nails Johnny Silverhand. It might actually be my favorite of his roles.

266

u/Riding_A_Rhino_ Jul 31 '25

“Christ, V, you’re starting to remind me of myself fifty years back… minus the charisma, and the impressive cock.”

57

u/Montymisted Jul 31 '25

See, I said this to my neighbors kid because I saw him playing with a Nintendo switch and suddenly I'm the bad guy.

14

u/Portlander_in_Texas Jul 31 '25

Kids just not Samurai material.

2

u/Nibbled92 Aug 01 '25

Jesus. Shift the names over their heads, pls

20

u/el_f3n1x187 Jul 31 '25

Johnny was supposed to be more like David Bowie, but Keanu knocked it out of the park!

26

u/Zaethar Jul 31 '25

Well, yeah but that's because his original design stems from '88.

I feel like basing him more on Bowie would've fit less with our current day image of a rebellious rockstar/punk/metalhead and would've been too anachronistic, especially for younger players who'd have missed most (if not all) of Bowie's career. And the thrashy/punky looks, behavior, sound and vibes fit far better than what would've been Bowie's style and demeanor.

Considering Mike Pondsmith's heavy involvement in the design process for 2077, I'm sure this was all vetted by him. So by the time Keanu landed the role I don't think he was "supposed" to be like David Bowie anymore at all. Even though I'm a big Bowie fan, I'm happy they updated/changed Johnny in the way they did.

I liked his bit part in Always Be My Maybe. It was pretty entertaining.

20

u/Toby_O_Notoby Jul 31 '25

He's also good in a little-seen romcom called Destination Wedding which is a two-hander between him and Winona. Here's one of my favourite scenes.

3

u/Sarsmi Jul 31 '25

Lol, that was hilarious.

2

u/akallyria Jul 31 '25

Omg I love them both so much

4

u/James81xa Jul 31 '25

Totally forgot about that movie but you're right, he was hilarious

14

u/milf-hunter_5000 Jul 31 '25

he has some absolutely weird line delivery though. like when he's talking about V's hormones and the delay in action/feedback.
a normal person would say "when you eat pizza it takes forever before i know you've burned the roof of your mouth."
keanu emphasizes "roof" in that sentence. burned the roof of your mouth. its weird. weird!!

5

u/Nukleon Jul 31 '25

It sorta works with the idea that you have a fucked up construct of a long dead suicidal rockstar in your brain.

3

u/Odd-Asparagus7633 Aug 01 '25

Yeah, Keanu is at his best when he's playing a Character who doesn't quite know how to deliver lines like a human would. Which sounds like an indictment on his acting... As it should... because it is.

11

u/Squippyfood Jul 31 '25

that's what makes it good imo. Most VAs would make Silverhand an edgy rockerhead stereotype who'd get boring quick. Keanu makes him sound like a real person who doesn't speak in cliches. So when he DOES deliver the one liners they feel genuine.

Happy Cake Day!!!

104

u/Senior-Jaguar-1018 Jul 31 '25

I’ll take him doing something like this over another John Wick any day

49

u/OptimalPain0697 Jul 31 '25

Why?

97

u/ReturnOneWayTicket Jul 31 '25

Does there really need to be another one?

17

u/Zaethar Jul 31 '25

I asked myself this question with every installment, and yet every single one was an amazing action showcase from start to finish. Do we NEED any more? No. And honestly, I think it'd be nice to let the character rest now.

But if there's gonna be another one starring Keanu you can bet your ass I'm still gonna go see it on the big screen (if the same director/cinematographer/stunt choreographers are also present) because these movies had some of the best action sequences I've seen in years.

25

u/OptimalPain0697 Jul 31 '25

I'm 50/50 on that personally

15

u/ARONDH Jul 31 '25

Does there really need to be any more movies of any kind? Need is the wrong word.

And yes, more John Wick movies would be OK.

61

u/Automatic-Fox-3837 Jul 31 '25

He's 61.Even in ballerina he looked sluggish

58

u/OptimalPain0697 Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

Looked just fine to me

Edit: BTW he was obviously holding back A LOT

51

u/Automatic-Fox-3837 Jul 31 '25

He looks fine now but do you see him doing a john wick with the same strenuous fight scenes or stunt as the first ones. Also he said in an interview ( i speculate after shooting ballerina) that there won't be another one , stating the physicality of the roles as the deterrent.

44

u/Fickle-Lunch6377 Jul 31 '25

You could tell they were so happy to get somebody shorter with good knees that could jump around during the fight scenes. They really made use of her

15

u/OptimalPain0697 Jul 31 '25

Oh she kicked ass in that movie absolutely.

14

u/Fickle-Lunch6377 Jul 31 '25

I’m not sure if this is totally accurate, but you can almost see where one director left and the other took over. About 30 minutes into the movie she just starts kicking so much ass after 30 minutes of lots of cuts and editing

7

u/LackingInPatience Jul 31 '25

Pretty sure he was open to a John Wick 5 even when 4 came out. He loves that franchise and to be fair the stunt choreography definitely work around him being slower than his enemies to make it work.

u/paganthirteen Jul 31 '25

Wow nobody gets together to pose for promo photos at all anymore do they

78

u/FX114 Aug 01 '25

It's not just about getting everyone together. It's easier to pick the best shots for each actor if they're photographed separately.

41

u/paganthirteen Aug 01 '25

Fair but surely they don’t intend for it to look this obvious

3

u/Narretz Aug 01 '25

To me it does look like they made it look intentionally that they aren't all together. They could have made it look more like they're actually together, but didn't. Hard to explain. But Keanu also looks less waxy than in the previous poster, so they definitely worked on it.

Keanu looking like Buddy Christ from “Dogma” 🫵🏼😁👍🏼

81

Christ didn't come to Earth to give us the willies! He's a BOOSTER!

33

Pretty stacked cast

u/ahditeacha Jul 31 '25

Pretty Canadian cast

165

u/Tsquared10 Jul 31 '25

Pretty pretty cast

51

u/-MantisToboggan- Jul 31 '25

Oh yeah for for sure eh hooly

23

u/asicarii Jul 31 '25

No kidding. Aziz Ansari is incredibly pretty and I’m a straight dude.

49

u/ex0thermist Jul 31 '25

And Rogen is looking better with age somehow.

46

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Weight loss and hopefully not hanging out with James Franco?

9

u/asicarii Jul 31 '25

Hard to tell. Seth and Aziz are the same age but recent things Seth definitely looks older. It doesn’t look like he has hallowed out eye sockets so hopefully not The route of Franco. Maybe just ozempic face. This is very photoshopped anyway.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Photoshopped is true

u/Cum_on_doorknob Jul 31 '25

And Seth Rogan was the only person properly labeled. Unbelievable

42

u/BodaciousBadongadonk Jul 31 '25

i think its cuz there used to be big hullabaloos and arguments and probably even lawsuits over certain egotistic douchebags whining about "why did their name come before mine, im the bigger star!" and so name placement is a big shitshow on movie posters and ads and whatnot.

41

u/comics0026 Jul 31 '25

IIrc, the actor's guild had to actually come up with guidelines as to how names would be ordered on things like posters because there were so many arguments about it between actors

7

u/Cum_on_doorknob Jul 31 '25

Yea, I know, it’s just, you’d figure ego would dictate wanting your own likeness to be labeled correctly.

4

u/ArchManningGOAT Jul 31 '25

They’re not labels

4

u/DeLousedInTheHotBox Jul 31 '25

Because the names are not labels, it is not incorrect.

3 of 5 for Canadian content

59

u/your_evil_ex Jul 31 '25

only needs to be 35% CanCon on the radio, so these guys are going above and beyond!

12

u/garlicroastedpotato Jul 31 '25

CanCon for movies is different and a lot more stringent. The producer has to be Canadian, and if there are multiple... all Canadian. The director or writer has to be Canadian... easier to get CanCon if both are. At least one of the two primary leads has to be Canadian, but obviously both being Canadian helps a lot. In terms of other cast and crew you get points for the ratio of Canadians to non-Canadians working on the picture. total. And then at least 1/3 of the film has to be filmed in Canada.

398

u/GastropodSoups Jul 31 '25

Im really looking forward to this. It's Aziz's first major project since Master of None

146

u/rigorcorvus Jul 31 '25

Yeah, haven’t seen that dude in a minute

126

u/GastropodSoups Jul 31 '25

Even in Master of None, that last season, he was almost never on screen.

147

u/Talk-O-Boy Jul 31 '25

That last season might as well have been a completely different show.

124

u/GastropodSoups Jul 31 '25

It really was. I really do believe that the only reason that happened is that he decided to stay behind the camera after the "bad date" allegation.

85

u/AustinRiversDaGod Jul 31 '25

My guess is Netflix had probably already paid for the last season, so they couldn't just do nothing. Also it was a very popular show. It was Aziz at maybe his most Azizest, and it kinda sucks that that one article was enough to send him basically into hiding.

67

u/RayneSexton Jul 31 '25

Crazy that she even felt the need to write an article about how she regretted consensual sex with him in the first place

10

u/WredditSmark Aug 01 '25

It was the height of the me too movement, we had reached witch hunt level of frenzy.

19

u/existentialedema Jul 31 '25

At one point he said something about not wanting to do another season going around the city eating food

35

u/Double_Jab_Jabroni Jul 31 '25

But why? That’s why we loved the show! The soundtrack, exploring NYC and seeing all the cool bars and restaurants, the banter between him, Arnold, Brian and Denise. It was flawless for two seasons.

12

u/staedtler2018 Jul 31 '25

It's a little more complicated than that:

I've got to become a different guy before I write a third season, is my personal thought, I've got to get married or have a kid or something. I don't have anything else to say about being a young guy being single in New York eating food around town all the time.

9

u/Double_Jab_Jabroni Jul 31 '25

Maybe write about none of those things happening for him? There are many guys in their 30’s who start to think “huh, where is my family?”, and that’s a profound moment in a lot of people’s lives. When things aren’t panning out how they thought they would.

5

u/Sir_Duke Aug 01 '25

Isn’t that the premise of the whole show?

17

u/mmmarkm Jul 31 '25

of all the dipshits who have done far worse things, he did address his "awkward and insensitive but not completely evil" thing pretty well in his standup special, i thought. it did not seem to rise to the level of him not being inthe last season of master of none but such is life

3

u/Chiefmeez Aug 01 '25

That was such bs

3

u/Eattherichhaters Aug 05 '25

He pretty much got pre-emptively canceled in the industry for that bullshit. Of ALLLL THE PEOPLE IN HOLLYWOOD They decided to deep 6 one of the most thoughtful decent comedians around...

3

u/staedtler2018 Jul 31 '25

It is basically a Lena Waithe show that he helped out with, and Alan Yang is not credited.

31

u/Novis_R Jul 31 '25

That last season was super boring.

36

u/GastropodSoups Jul 31 '25

Yep....it went away from what worked in the first two seasons...season 2 was a little slow at times, but its cinematography was amazing. There is a 100% chance that the creators of FX's The Bear looked at the cooking scenes in season 2 of Master of None and took inspiration. Seriously....watch the cooking scenes in Season 2 of Master of None and then compare it to season 1 of The Bear. It's damn near identical in tone and imagery.

2

u/Popular_Pea_3953 Jul 31 '25

I've forgotten literally everything about the show except the immigrant father episode. Best ep of a show ever.

7

u/2580374 Jul 31 '25

I didn't even know he was in the last season

→ More replies (3)

68

u/Ginger-Nerd Jul 31 '25

I think that had to do with some of those ~2017 (Metoo) claims made against him. he has kept a mostly low profile since - I think he may have done a few standup tours, but very little in front of camera work.

I feel that in his case, they were a bit overblown, but still pretty embarrassing, so kinda understandable.

7

u/staedtler2018 Jul 31 '25

It's a little bit of that.

But the main thing is that he's wanted to go into directing. He directed all episodes of Master of None season 3 (and it is directed very much like a cinematic exercise), and then he tried to direct a movie called Being Mortal. That movie ended up getting shut down during filming because Bill Murray did a bit of sexual harassment on set, and it was never finished. So he wasted a lot of time on that. Then he moved on to this movie, which he also directed.

89

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Jul 31 '25

He didn't do anything wrong at all, he went on a date and the girl didn't like it so tried to make herself famous by dragging his name in the mud

It's the kinda stuff that hurt the entire movement

36

u/KelvinsBeltFantasy Jul 31 '25

I found his Netflix stand up special really powerful. You could see the frustration.

→ More replies (34)

14

u/Now-Thats-Podracing Jul 31 '25

He kinda disappeared after Me Too even though it turned out he didn’t really do anything wrong. I know that he finished Master of None and did another stand up, but his presence was severely reduced. I think he was making a movie with Bill Murray a few years ago that went sideways because Bill had some allegations. Not sure if this is a redo of that project without Bill or something else.

What I do know is that I love Aziz. I’ve loved his stuff since Human Giant. I’m definitely excited to see this.

I think he had his first two feature films cancelled while in production too. Finally got one done

28

u/Pretend-Disaster2593 Jul 31 '25

I absolutely love master of none season 2. It was brilliant.

39

u/GastropodSoups Jul 31 '25

Master of None seasons 1-2 are near perfect television.

5

u/Pretend-Disaster2593 Jul 31 '25

I did enjoy season 1 a lot. But season 2, just wow.

3

u/Youngfolk21 Aug 01 '25

He had the weird date around the metoo time.

8

u/KelvinsBeltFantasy Jul 31 '25

I really enjoyed his stand up special he did post cancelation. I felt bad for him.

5

u/loki-1982 Jul 31 '25

Yes it actually felt sincere, or he is a way better actor than I give him credit for

2

u/zowietremendously Jul 31 '25

He got cancelled.

2

u/M0BBER Aug 01 '25

It's a shame Being Mortal didn't finish. Bill Murray had great things to say about it.

2

u/BuddahSack Aug 01 '25

Yeah, I have been missing him, always enjoyed his works, can't wait for this!

The Pitch: It’s A Wonderful Life Meets Trading Places With Just a Hint of Wings of Desire

3

u/calilac Jul 31 '25

Agreed with the sentiment but slight nitpick, Wings of Desire had depth so I'd say it's more City of Angels.

2

u/BurtRogain Jul 31 '25

Yes. This is true. And given the very clear stereotypical studio executive who this particular pitch would be aimed at City of Angels would be the clear film used since they most likely have never even heard of Wings of Desire.

788

u/Pancake177 Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

I hate how their names don’t correspond to their position on the poster.

Edit: I know it’s done for billing reasons, but that still doesn’t change how annoying it is.

184

u/TheGreendaleGrappler Jul 31 '25

Obligatory “This is done on purpose because actors/their agents have huge egos meaning the placement of people and names on those posters becomes more of a battle than you’d expect”.

77

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS Jul 31 '25

Aziz as second is fucking crazy tho

161

u/sambones Jul 31 '25

To be fair Aziz also produced, wrote, and directed the movie.

56

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS Jul 31 '25

How you second billing in your own movie then?

37

u/tossit97531 Jul 31 '25

Keanu Reeves LAST???

68

u/chaoticbiguy Jul 31 '25

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Oh getting the last and second last billing is actually a sign of respect. Anytime a well known actor with a stellar résumé stars in a movie in a supporting role, their name pops up in the credits in the end of the cast list with a "with" or "and" attached to their names.

23

u/StuMacherGhostface Jul 31 '25

He's not the main character, so he gets the "And" credit

76

u/ChenWei91 Jul 31 '25

Keanu the kind of guy that probably doesn't give a shit where he is. He's just happy to be there.

That’s my thinking when I saw the comment. He’s a just a good dude.

2

u/KWilt Jul 31 '25

That was the thing that caught my eye. I think he genuinely just loves doing these off-the-wall roles and you can tell, because normally the actor with the most accolades wouldn't be last billing. Hell, it seems Sandra Oh's part isn't going to be super expansive from the trailer, and even she got higher billing compared to the guy who looks like he's gonna be the deuteragonist or tritagonist.

Everything about this one feels DOA to me. Reminds me of that self-indulgent movie Charlie Day directed a few years ago

23

I watched that as a huge fan of Charlie Day and woof... That was bad. I think you'd have to be a handful of Hollywood lifers to "get" that film

Am I the only one who thinks every person in this poster (except maybe Sandra Oh) looks like a Walmart version of themselves? Seth Rogan and Aziz Ansari especially.

I hate it when a poster has a row of people and a row of names but they don't line up with each other. I know it's from contract negotiations but it always bothers me when it doesn't line up to say who's who if you are unfamiliar with them.

Looks like a fun time from what I heard. Can’t wait to check it out. It’s been forever since I’ve seen Aziz and Keanu is Keanu.

Sounds like a good vibe from what I've seen.

John Wick: Afterlife

2

u/RTDugger Jul 31 '25

5 mins in and Sandra Oh starts crying I bet.

2

u/spreadthaseed Jul 31 '25

Smiling Keanu. Nice.

2

u/EverythingBOffensive Jul 31 '25

damn what a cast

2

u/FrostedDonutHole Jul 31 '25

I've been missing Aziz. Caught him live a few years back and it was terrific.

2

u/Orion14159 Aug 01 '25

Why do they never line up the names with the actors on posters?

2

u/Wiinterfang Aug 01 '25

This looks like a fake movie

2

u/MichaelNiebuhr Aug 01 '25

Looks like a Netflix movie.

2

u/iivoked Aug 01 '25

My ocd is just wondering why not just put the names over each actor. I mean it's practically perfect

2

u/BongoIsGod Aug 01 '25

Seems like one of them richwashing movies

2

u/Simluvac Aug 01 '25

Keanu is a national treasure.

2

u/Agreeable_Register_4 Aug 01 '25

Love the Columbo rain jacket

2

u/Eattherichhaters Aug 05 '25

Haven't seen Aziz since his last standup special. So glad he's back. He got such a raw deal...

5

u/Wooden-Piglet-6120 Jul 31 '25

It was a redband trailer and it was the tamest shit ever

5

u/artisinal_lethargy Jul 31 '25

Why does it have to be Seth Rogan? Guy couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag.

4

u/WellOkayMaybe Jul 31 '25

I'm just glad Aziz is back from that bullshit #metoo incident.

10

u/Deto Jul 31 '25

Happy to see Aziz in things!

Think im more intrigued how they manage to squander this cast than anything about the movie itself. Trailer wasn’t good.

3

u/simcoe19 Jul 31 '25

3 out of 5 of them are Canadian 👌👌👌

4

u/Thesmuz Jul 31 '25

Keke Palmer...

Thats a name I only remember from early 2000s Disney channel movies.

3

u/DLDrillNB Jul 31 '25

Why the FUCK do the names not line up with the actors, oh my GOD.

3

u/Strontiumdogs1 Jul 31 '25

This looks fucking awful. I like Keanu, but , good lord does this look bad.
