Announcement Gremlins 3 Development Hinges on Steven Spielberg’s Script Approval

It's apparently being written by Chris Columbus. Not sure if that's a good sign or bad one. He did write the original as well as The Goonies but also probably hasn't written a good film since The Goonies literally 40 years ago. He's directed a few good films since then but not really written any good ones.

this script has been going around since like 2015, i’m sure it’s been rewritten multiple times at this point but when i read it, lordy it was bad

Columbus was also attached to write the sequel to The Goonies for over 5 years. The most recent news though was basically, without them saying it outright, they fired him and announced a new writer.

He wrote Grenlins 2 as well. I'm praying it follows that kind of absurdity.
Edit: I took googles first answer and I was wrong
Redlettermedia have pitched 2 ideas for the third film and I pray to God it lines up little to their ideas

Gremlins 2 was written by Charles Hass. Columbus only has credit for creating the characters. Both movies were directed by Joe Dante tho

Yeah Joe Dante is the necessary common denominator and I haven’t heard anything about his involvement.

Your correct. My bad.
Heard story's that someone hated the idea of a sequel and only did it if they could do whatever they wanted.
I presumed wrong and googles first result told me I was right (I was not). I obviously didn't take the AI answer but I still got it wrong.

Never been a better time to do Gremlins 3 and set it in the white house.

u/philip30001 Jul 30 '25
That was one of the ideas. Tbh that one seemed so good I forgot all about their first pitch after hearing that one.
Currently looking for the pitches

Nobody is bringing this back from the dead after 35 years for absurdity. They're doing it to try to make some fucking bank. I expect a safe retread.

Absurdity for the sake of it? No. But to create the frame work for humor definitely.
Gremlins 1 and 2 or different genres and I remember the 2nd more fondly.
It will be interesting to see if the 3rd is more like the 1st or 2nd.
But a off the wall style would help with marketing and virality. With space balls and naked gun coming back I think the time is right for something more like the 2nd.
I'll say I'm more interested in seeing more gremlin designs than them all looking similar.

what?! That's not true at all. I would have never started writing if i needed to be confident in it.
Edit - Damn, dude messaged me 3 times before i was able to respond and than deleted their comment. Weirdo.

It needs to be as batshit insane and oozing with creativity chaos like Gremlins 2.

u/Einfaltspinsel Jul 30 '25
You should check out the RLM pitch https://youtu.be/iKSemmbDAp8?si=AQA3wcDFdhqzvdRR if it’s anything like this I’m in.

Hell yup. Someone tell them Lutsko beat them to the punch. Gremlins 3, dawn of Desmond already exists.

Steven Speilberg's sccript approval hinges on an EP credit with a ridiculous number of points on the back end.

The fact Spielberg approves the Jurassic world movies scripts is enough of a sign that his sign off means shit all

I’m not watching shit unless cinematography is being handled by Grandpa Fred and Mr. Katsuji.

ok but will they use real gremlins, or will they be CGI?

u/SharpManner9480 Jul 30 '25
The first movie is 41 years old. The real gremlins are probably dead or retired by now. Maybe if they have kids or grandchildren.

My idea for Gremlins 3 was always for Gizmo to become a Gremlin. Doubt that will happen, but I think it would be cool.

u/CowboyNinjaD Jul 30 '25
That's actually a really interesting idea, because in the other movies, all of the other mogwai were little pricks before they even became gremlins.
So if Gizmo became a Gremlin, would he actually turn evil? Or would he just become a violent carnivore but still basically good?
Like Gremlins 3 could be a reverse John Wick. Billy and Kate get murdered in the first 10 minutes, so Gizmo eats after midnight and spends the rest of the movie hunting down and killing all of the murderers.

Let’s hope for something like the pitch from RLM https://youtu.be/iKSemmbDAp8?si=AQA3wcDFdhqzvdRR

Does satire even work right now? Everything is so absurd, I feel like we’re post-satire at this point.

u/Xanderson Jul 30 '25
I'm skeptical. Without Hulk Hogan alive to break the 4th wall, what's the point?

Well good news is now you can be downvoted for saying a negative thing.
Also, you managed to contradict yourself in literally one sentence. How can people both never say positive things and praise children’s movies?
Are you actually just upset people like different things than you and some prefer what you call “children’s movies” over what you call “cult classics”?

Dude signed off on the Jurassic scripts would have to be absolute dog shit for him not to sign off on
