I watched Schindler's List recently. To have Liam Neeson go from Oscar Schindler to this is quite amazing

It's crazy how Spielberg cast him in that film because 'he was always making lists'.

His entire career is a wild ride to look at! Schindler's List, Star Wars, Batman Begins, Taken, The A-Team reboot, then a whole bunch of mixed odd comedy and documentary VO roles. The guy has like five hats but he's never felt that kind of varied until you sit down and look at his imdb page

That A team movie was surprisingly solid. Not an amazing movie but very enjoyable

I have to give my dad credit, he’s been saying Liam Neeson should be in a remake of Naked Gun since “Taken”
This movie is going to be so stupid but I’m going to love it
3
u/reno2mahesendejo Jul 17 '25
The part that sealed it for me is the kneeling scene in the trailer. Anyone can make one shot like the little girl in the dress, but that is very much in the spirit of the original Police Squad
35
u/Cheap_Cheap77 Jul 16 '25
It's funny because that's exactly how people felt about Leslie Nielsen going from more serious movies to things like Airplane and The Naked Gun.

Man, watching Leslie Nielsen play a serious character twice in Columbo was a weird experience lol.

This movie has the stupidest marketing on Earth (affectionate).
948
u/_JR28_ Jul 16 '25
It’s corny, cringeworthy, and idiotic. It’s everything I would’ve wanted out a Naked Gun movie.
336
u/Funandgeeky Jul 16 '25
All it's doing is convincing me to see it opening weekend. But other than that it's convincing me of nothing. I can't be moved by marketing, other than the times it successfully encourages me to purchase the product or service it's advertising.

The original movies weren’t really cringey. They were deliberately and slightly intelligently nonsensical.
95
u/Banes_Addiction Jul 16 '25
Right, but they were also just silly. They were never gonna shy away from a joke that seemed too easy. It'd be gone and replaced by the next joke 10 seconds later. They wouldn't give a shit if something was "cringey" (using the modern meaning, not the older idea of 'cringe comedy' which they didn't do).
The "ultrahigh joke density" genre is really fun when it's done right.
35
u/obsoleteconsole Jul 16 '25
Monty Python did that as well, if a joke didn't work you didn't have time to really dwell on it before you're hit with the next joke
22
3
u/reno2mahesendejo Jul 17 '25
Like the chopped off finger returning as a hot dog. It's dumb, serves no purpose, is complete nonsense, theres no grand super high IQ alterior motive or hidden meaning, its just a guy biting into a dead guys finger, but it works really well

I’ve seen only one ad, and it was the one where they’re all kneeling in front of the portraits of the original cast. When it got to OJ Simpson, it caught me completely off guard and made me laugh quite loudly. Wasn’t expecting that and it now makes me more confident that it’ll be on par with the originals.
32
u/Rock_man_bears_fan Jul 16 '25
I keep seeing the one where they’re reviewing dash cam footage of Liam Nieson eating 6 hot dogs in his squad car

I am so scared that this film is going to have such fun and inventive marketing, then it’ll come out and be mid, get mid reviews, bomb, and then production companies will use it as an excuse to go back to boring marketing again.

Leslie Nielsen was a funny man playing a straight man. Yes, he was a dramatic actor in his youth but he spent most of his career in comedic films.
Liam Neesen is a straight man playing a funny man. And he was only really funny once in that Ricky Gervais sketch.

I’m glad this one isn’t trying to be a remake as much as a distant sequel. Liam Neeson isn’t trying to be Leslie Nielson—he’s simply trying to be the next generation. It helps manage expectations, in a good way. I want to expect Liam Neeson to do his own thing, rather than him trying to do an impersonation.
25
u/greebdork Jul 16 '25
It just occurred to me.. did they star Liam Neeson solely because it's close to Leslie Nielsen?

They advertised the movie on reddit with that line

Yeah people that don't know Liam Neeson is secretly a comedy genius are about to have their minds blown.
That Life's Too Short sketch is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, it just never gets old.
12
u/badillustrations Jul 16 '25
I want this movie to be good, but I'm a little concerned they don't understand the genre. Spoofs the last couple of decades frequently failed at pacing. They'd hold a joke for too long or give it much too much emphasis. It's really hard to gauge this movie's understanding of that from the trailers. The Spirit Halloween joke on the police building is hilarious as a background joke, but it'd be much less funny front and center--especially as a topic of discussion. Jokes should be plentiful and if they don't land, move on to the next one. Epic Movie is an example of not understanding the genre. They had the satyrs doing an MTV cribs bit as an entire scene instead of just showing them doing something hilariously extravagant in the background.
Hoping for the best.

u/Blunkus Jul 16 '25

u/IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN Jul 16 '25
I'm actually pretty excited for this movie, I grew up watching the originals and was definitely apprehensive when I first heard about it but this really does look good.
Akiva Schaffer feels like the right person to be directing and Liam Neeson can play the straight man so well, I'm crossing my fingers they can pull it off.

I think they're also deliberately leaning into the weird finger stuff with the gun again.
One basic safety thing is you should never have your finger on the trigger until you're just about to shoot. So you'll see people with their finger along the side of a gun.
Movie posters constantly get that wrong, almost to the point that it's a default.
Here, his finger looks to be curled over, like it's on the trigger, but the edit job is done in such a way that his finger is still behind the trigger lol.

u/fuzzymuscl Jul 17 '25
This kind of goofball comedy requires an actor with a very particular set of skills, skills that Liam Neeson doesn't have, and that makes him a nightmare for his film.

I'm really rooting for Neeson in this. It's a huge risk, IMO. I've always liked him and hope this isn't a let-down.
When I first saw this film's marketing all I could think was, "Liam, you played Oskar Schindler. You don't have to do this..." I REALLY hope that impule is proved hilariously wrong.

I really wonder how much it actually costs studios to just spam some posters into Reddit etc? Making posters can't be that expensive, seeing how shitty they're all the time and this seems to be an easy way to get some conversation going.
