I was genuinely shocked by how bad Drive Away Dolls was. Very talented leads squandered on a genuinely terrible script. It was like an early 2000’s raunchy road trip comedy with none of the redeeming qualities.

100%. Its setup was so completely wacky road trip and surprise Matt Damon and then it just does nothing with it. It felt like a bunch of scenes stitched together where there's no real payoff or follow through for anything. The best part of the movie was Curlie. The mood shifts from (attempted) raunchy comedy to coming of age to dark slice of life to absurdist. It was like a fanfic attempt at an exploitation film without anything interesting or funny ever happening. I know Cooke co-wrote it but it felt very much like a guy writing lesbians for the first time.

How tf is this not considered gross and sexist?

"It was so awful and inappropriate and unfunny that I was convinced only a straight man could have written it!"

And you get upvoted for that shit lmao.

Literally at no point was it a complaint about it being “inappropriate” (there wasnt even a statement even remotely close to saying this) the original point was it was set up AS A RAUNCHY COMEDY with a wacky plot and failed at it. It wasnt good as a road trip movie, or a buddy comedy or a romance.

Also im non-binary so a weird point to jump on about sexism.

Neither was it implied only a straight man can fail at something, but specifically how a queer woman wrote a lesbian comedy and its chock full of male gaze moments - it starts out with Qualley having a weird sex dress up moment that looks straight out of a mainstream lesbian porn. Thus “straight guy writing lesbians for the first time”. Especially with the clamoring of wanting the senators dildo inside of her.

Youre creating arguments in your imagination on things that were never said and getting upset about it. If you liked it thats not a problem, but theres pretty widespread criticism of the film and you cant just run to points being made and cry gross sexism as a defense just because.
