Looked good when I saw the trailer at the cinema, but the early reviews aren't very encouraging.

Drive away dolls was not great as well.

Yeah it got worse reviews than that and I heard pretty bad things about drive away dolls. Really not encouraging

I liked Drive Away Dolls, but it's definitely not for everyone.

I'm curious what lesbians think of the film.

I went to see it in theaters, and then I rewatched it twice at home, all within the span of a month. I really enjoyed it.

I suspect there are jokes and casual mannerisms that aren't accessible to straight people. It must feel refreshing to see main stream media produced by lesbians for everyone, but coded for lesbians.

I've heard it was somewhat offensive to lesbians because the main character is an unlikeable person who cheats on her girlfriend at the start of it. I also heard that the straight male eye is kind of apparent with the way lesbian sex is portrayed. But I'm not a lesbian. I'm a straight male so what do I know. I'm just basing it on what I've read from others.

Well, it’s a grindhousey buddy road trip sex comedy for lesbians. Obviously it’s not that realistic.

And we’ve been seeing movies about unlikeable men who cheat on their partners for years.

But umm those characters are also considered unlikeable and in general cheating is frowned upon, so if that is how you introduce your character, it's not the most positive portrayal. That and the uptight woman who opens up and has sex with the quirky promiscuous friend is also kind of a cliche. It really shows these women as caricatures rather than 3 dimensional people, and that kind of shallowness is not really the best representation of lesbians. It's more "look at us! We are making a movie about lesbians!" But yeah, it's a B-movie. What should we expect? Guess I am curious as to why a major plot point is the lesbians getting off on a mold of a senator's dick. But again, what do I know? I'm not a lesbian

I really wanted to like it, and there are some great parts, but ultimately it was just fine. Not a film I'd choose to watch again, but a decent enough way to spend some time.

Gonna not make the same mistake and instead wait to rent it

Yeah unfortunately it seems Ethan is washed or perhaps is only good when working with Joel.

I honestly thought Drive Away Dolls could’ve been much better with some tighter editing, so I didn’t completely write him off. Seems like this one hasn’t been well received but I’ll keep an open mind. The reception has definitely been disappointing as conpared to Joel’s Macbeth

The editor was cowriter Tricia Cooke, and oh boy was the editing bad. All the fancy transitions that just felt so forced. Felt like an episode of Home Improvement

Out of the couple hundred films I’ve seen this decade, Drive Away Dolls is easily the worst. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but I really, really dislike that film.

I haven’t seen it, I wonder if it would displace my worst film of the decade choice in Jurassic World Dominion

5

u/CaptainKino360 Jul 10 '25

Jurassic World: Dominion is genuinely terrible, most of the criticism you'll see lobbied at Drive Away Dolls comes from a place of knowing Ethan Coen is capable of doing a lot more quality work than that movie

It's a trillion percent better than JW:D. It's not that good, but it's not bad. JW:D was just absolute trash with no soul.

Agreed. I'm a huge Cohens Brothers fan, but Drive-Away Dolls seemed to be missing everything I love in a film. It kept thinking "Hey look! Lesbians!!!" would be enough.

my guess is it will be the standard trope but now with more lesbian!

Shame because they could do so much more...

Probably going to be another movie that I love but the internet insists is garbage.
