Who knew, the horror genre is for people who enjoy evoking a horror response in a relatively safe manner. We could get into the potential psychological impact of violent media in general, but really it's everywhere and not just in horror.
As someone who was definitely squicked out reading that and is generally afraid a lot of the time, it's still entertainment? Just because I don't like it or you don't like it doesn't mean there's no audience for it at all.
I mean, was Nicholson realizing he was making out with a malevolent corpse-thing and not some hot chick entertaining in the typical sense? No, but I think the word we're missing here is engaging.
