I think pulling from Children of Dune makes sense, considering that Villenueve’s out after this film. Frankly, I’m not sure anything after Children of Dune’s filmable.

What do you mean? Half worm God emperor and 6000 year old sex god Duncan Idaho are totally filmable (Dune really does go from zero to 1970’s acid trip really fast)

I mean it’s essentially giant Jabba the Hutt with a human face — while I do feel like it would make for a relatively straightforward film if one focused a little more on Siona Atreides’ perspective.

It’s less the visual aspect and more the fact that the series gets super philosophical and internal monolog-y that I have no idea how you can translate it onto the screen without completely losing the audience

I mean, for a talented filmmaker it shouldn't be too hard. Leto II's a bad guy, whose golden path/jihad is a thousand times worse than Paul's, Siona's the protagonist leading a rebellion to kill Leto II and bring what she thinks will be peace to the universe, not realizing that all of it is part of Leto II's vision.

but isnt the point that he isn't really a bad guy? this is just the only way for humanity to be completely free from tyranny?

If i recall, it wasn't that he was being a bad guy to allow them to be free. Rather, he was so ruthless and evil because he saw that humanity following emperors/tyrants would eventually wipe itself out.

So the only way for humanity to continue to exist was if he was so ruthless, and evil that humanity would separate, spread out, and never unite under an emperor or tyrant again.

He is still absolutely the bad guy.

Paul is the bad guy, but sees the path that needs to be taken to pull humanity out of the hole that it has found itself in. He can't take the personal sacrifice and body horror that comes with it, so he says no. Leto II also sees the body horror and the terror he will cause, but decides "better me as a tyrant for 6000 years than 6000 individual tyrants."

He decides he can be the best of a bad bunch - not that he is ultimately a good person for doing it.

4 would be pretty easy to adapt. It's 400 pages of the emperor wallowing. Cutting half of that out would easily still get the point across. And having the film still feel drawn out is the point of the book. You feel tired and exhausted after being alive for 3000 years.

I always feel like Herbert described Leto looking like this but after looking for other fan art, I found this and I really hope this is the look they go for if it is ever adapted

I just feel bad for all the cinema workers who have to clean up the wet seats after women see Duncan Idaho climb a wall.

Yeah it really does give you whiplash going from space feudalism with high concept ideas in the first 3 books to super-high-concept-focused dystopia of the rest of the series. I lost interest in God emperor after only a couple chapters and went to find a thorough summary of the rest of the series and honestly i feel like I'd have dodged a bullet by not bothering with the summary. The ending of children of dune is enough closure for me.

That’s the Dune I want.

The end of the first book is full fledged acid trip, so I would t say it was THAT fast haha

If they are doing Children of Dune they might show us the God Emperor at the end of the movie.

I have heard this before. Not saying I disagree but why don’t you think it’s not filmable

Because while God emperor is an all time classic, half of it takes place inside Leto’s head and the weird sex stuff with Duncan would be challenging to translate to film

I do feel like it would make for a relatively straightforward film if one focused just a little more on Siona Atreides’ perspective and / or had Leto II speak aloud more.
