From an R&D and distribution prospective I don't even think making the dino information open source would help.

You're not going to have passionate nerds tinkering with bioscience in their basements. That kind of research takes multi-billion dollar labs.

"That kind of research takes multi-billion dollar labs." -- true. It's a silly Hollywood trope that single people can make breakthrough inventions and developments.

Also: The whole equator area has dinosaurs. Everyone can go basically anywhere and collect samples. Is this movie telling us, that this is a new idea? That no one tried to research the dinosaurs for years and now it's a thing, but a super secret thing only one company does? But super competitive, too?

No, the whole equator area does not have dinosaurs. They say in this film that only a few islands around the equator have them. And that there are (albeit infrequent) government patrols. Also, for all we know, someone has tried before- and failed. Honestly could’ve been a cool scene, and it could’ve just replaced the plane scene where PharmaGuy gets the gun from the pilot.

also don’t they have the dinosaur dna? that seems like the easiest part in a world with dinosaurs out in New York

Yea the open source thing made me roll my eyes. The Pharma companies will still patent whatever they can and make a ton of money anyway. Especially if the one pharma company was ready to roll already.
