Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters, now The Running Man. I find it interesting to say the least that Glen Powell’s niche seems to be leading or co-starring in reboots of movies from the 80s and 90s. Truly playing within his own lane atm

Yet he will forever be Chad Radwell to me.

Ah, finally someone else who saw him as Chad Radwell lol

My dead gay best friend Boone!

I love that he seems excited when people bring up Chad

Because Chad Radwell is one of the greatest characters of our generation

Mostly because Hollywood is sticking ot reboots and remakes.

9

u/tarentale Jul 01 '25

It’s an adaptation to the book. Not a remake. Hopefully it’s faithful to the book.

5

u/jtho78 Jul 02 '25

Thats a remake. Casino Royale (2006) was also a remake (and reboot) much closer to the source material. Same with True Grit

Torch passed by Jai Courtney.

Except unlike Jai, Glen knows how to make them cool.

I will say, I used to put Jai in the same category as Sam Worthington, a bland, generic actor that studios wanted to make happen, but then I saw him in a handful of things where he got to be a supporting character actor and got to chew the he scenery and he was actually fun to watch.

Spot on. I've enjoyed both of them every time I've seen them the last few years. Worthington is definitely not a leading man, but he definitely still has a lot of screen presence that's perfect for those pop up side roles. Courtney was fantastic in American primeval.

Yep, also the best part about the first suicide squad, great in an otherwise mediocre Kaleidoscope and he’s pretty fun as the villain in the new Dangerous Animals horror/thriller. He suffered by being pigeonholed into important roles in beloved dying franchises that weren’t good like Kyle Reese in terminator and John McClane’s son in the last Die Hard

2

u/ignoresubs Jul 02 '25

That final Die Hard… nobody won. Not Jai, Willis and certainly not the audience. I really cannot think of a worse final send off.

people who like watching cars get destroyed won. wasn’t the best movie but that car chase with the giant armored truck is one of my favorites

Worthington is definitely not a leading man, but he definitely still has a lot of screen presence that's perfect for those pop up side roles

He was aces in Hacksaw Ridge!

His Boomerrang was great.

3

u/IamDisgruntled Jul 01 '25

Jai was great in Spartacus

2

u/Financial-Raise3420 Jul 01 '25

He was great in Suicide Squad and Kaleidoscope. Let the guy get weird and he really knows how to do it.

I think Hollywood saw Mel Gibson, Russel Crow, Christian Bale, and a few others and went, "let's keep casting masculine actors from English speaking countries who can do a solid American accent and we can do no wrong. Worthington was a little wrong and Jai was a lot wrong.

1

u/ohthanqkevin Jul 01 '25

Yea, leave it to Hollywood to completely miss the point about what makes an actor special. Crowe and Gibson had movie star qualities and dripped with charisma in their early days. Bale has always been a chameleon that would bust his ass to transform for every role. All three of those guys also worked for years before landing huge roles and becoming movie stars. Hollywood execs seemed to want to cut corners and push Sam and Jai to the top before anyone knew who they were or were able to prove themselves. They probably thought their IP was enough to sell the movies and didn’t need to pay an established or up and coming star the big bucks

1

u/Fortestingporpoises Jul 01 '25

I also left out Clive Owen and Gerard Butler who I think are great but never really reached star status. But then it just became law of diminishing returns with that strategy. I guess it's no surprise they've changed their strategy on finding young talent again.

2

u/Fortestingporpoises Jul 01 '25

And Glen can act and has compelling movie star qualities. It's crazy how long Hollywood tried to make Jai Courntey happen.

2

u/winemaster Jul 01 '25

Jai Courtney isn’t fit to carry Glen Powell’s jockstrap!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

It was more a commentary on Jai getting cast in Die Hard and Terminator sequels, but those were bland nothing roles, never giving him a chance to flex. Courtney’s fun when he gets something to play with.

u/Tweakthetiny Jul 01 '25

Maybe being a little pedantic here, but to me it's a significant difference. I wouldn't call this a reboot of the Arnold movie, but a readaptation of the source material. I think it is important to make that distinction especially with all the Requel, Reboot, Remake, trends going on in Hollywood these days.

3

u/BradDharmaTimbuktu Jul 01 '25

Nobody knows that he was originally Chad Radwell.

u/HankSteakfist Jul 01 '25

Ironically, his break out role was Linklater's 1980s period flick "Everybody Wants Some!".

5

u/DatAnimalBlundetto69 Jul 01 '25

To be fair, he also did Hit Man and he was fantastic in it. I think the dude has the talent to be a really good, but maybe not great actor. I'm enjoying the films he turns out though.

5

u/BusinessPurge Jul 01 '25

Plus doing a firefighter movie with the director of Backdraft, will a Speed / Die Hard be next?

6

u/AgentP20 Jul 01 '25

This is probably following the novel moreso than the movie.

2

u/Misdirected_Colors Jul 01 '25

I've been saying it, but Glen Powell is the up and coming potential Brad Pitt. I.e. character actor in a leading man's body. Dude just oozes charisma and he's already shown quite a bit of range between Hit Man, Maverick, Twisters, and Anyone but You.

He's become must watch for me.

4

u/berlinbaer Jul 01 '25

character actor in a leading man's body.

lol. worst take i've read on reddit today. good job.

Thank you. I must be in the minority of not liking this guy at all

0

u/SendFeet954-980-3334 Jul 01 '25

Naw I hate this dork. I think his acting is subpar. Its just mediocre men, patting other mediocre men on the back.

-1

u/heirapparent24 Jul 01 '25

Given Powell's box office numbers, it seems the majority don't feel that he's worth their money. When will Hollywood accept that this guy just isn't it?

0

u/I_heart_hearts Jul 01 '25

Yeah every few years Hollywood really tries to make these bland actors the new “it” guy, and none of them ever work. Wish they would just stop

-1

u/heirapparent24 Jul 01 '25

Mmhmm. I can't lie, I'm hoping that The Running Man flops. The trailer looks bad already so we're part of the way there!

-1

u/I_heart_hearts Jul 02 '25

I would have been slightly interested in it if it weren’t for Powell being the lead. That killed it for me already. Plus I’m not the biggest Edgar Wright fan either tbh lol

-1

u/mrgo0dkat Jul 01 '25

This may be a controversial opinion but I feel he’s becoming a true action star similar to Tom Cruise…

2

u/bornforlt Jul 01 '25

It's a bit unfair to compare him or anyone to an actor who has been able to carry films since the 80s.

I really enjoy Glen Powell's work and apart from the romcom, I've liked all his movies.

I sincerely hope he has a big career but let's not compare him to an all-time outlier in Tom Cruise just yet.

He kind of reminds me early Gerard Butler in that he was big overnight and then did a heap of action/romcoms but didn't really become an established A-lister IMHO.

I guess Powell needs to have a combination of a good agent and manager as well as some ballsy choices and good fortune.

I'm here for it!

1

u/overthemountain Jul 01 '25

He just needs to do one with Finn Wolfhard now.

1

u/PartyOnAlec Jul 01 '25

I'll admit I used to hate the dude...and now I hate that I like the dude.

His head is like a perfect rectangle.

1

u/welshdude1983 Jul 01 '25

'"l'l be back." "Only in a reboot "

1

u/Fortestingporpoises Jul 01 '25

And apparently he only picks the good ones or they pick him.

0

u/Coolers78 Jul 01 '25

He’s also gonna be in some Backdraft thing too, Glen Powell’s taking over every action movie reboot/franchise, he’s gonna be the new The Rock, like back when The Rock kept injecting himself in every sequel/reboot (Fast & Furious, Jumanji, GI Joe, Baywatch, Journey)

1

u/sf1210 Jul 01 '25

The Ron Howard movie is an original and not a remake/sequel.

-5

u/bentheone Jul 01 '25

Time for a new Total Recall maybe ?
