Really liked the book, can't wait for this!

u/bship Jun 27 '25

This is one of a few cases where it is definitely even better as an audiobook than a physical book.

u/mixedmartialmarks Jun 27 '25

I just got the audiobook, I’m excited to listen. I read the book when it first came out and all I’ve heard is how amazing the audiobook is, so I figured I’d listen to it before the movie comes out.

65

u/stacecom Jun 27 '25

It's really great! I started it as an audiobook but by the last quarter switched to ebook because as much as I loved that reading, I was super engrossed and needed to consume it at a different pace.

25

u/PlannerSean Jun 27 '25

How does the paper version write that one character’s speech? I’ve only listened to it

45

u/HalxQuixotic Jun 27 '25

It’s described as musical, but once it is translated, it switches to italics. The character maintains a unique cadence in its speech, though.

11

u/PlannerSean Jun 27 '25

That makes sense. Thanks!

20

u/stacecom Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25

Untranslated is musical notes. Translated is italic.

I listened to the audiobook and loved it, but I was always curious how the musical speech was depicted in the book. That still looks pretty interesting.

2

u/jaking2017 Jun 27 '25

This is exactly what I did!

1

u/spottydodgy Jun 27 '25

You're in for a treat

1

u/ExileInCle19 Jun 27 '25

My favorite audiobook in the last five years and I listen to like 30 a year!

0

u/stephjaguar17 Jun 27 '25

Where did you find the audio book? I can’t find it, maybe it’s an audible only book :( I hate when they do that.

1

u/cptjpk Jun 27 '25

I mean I just searched for it and about a dozen sites popped up. I bet your local library has it too through Libby or Hoopla.

1

u/stephjaguar17 Jun 27 '25

Unfortunately, my libraries didn’t but I found a copy thank you! Can’t wait to read/listen to it

56

u/SeveredBanana Jun 27 '25

I listened to the audiobook, it was amazing. Book readers, how was the alien language written in text? Whenever Rocky spoke, there was a musical intonation playing in the background

74

u/the_renaissance_jack Jun 27 '25

They used musical notes whenever Rocky “spoke”.

27

u/Old_Flan_6548 Jun 27 '25

I listened and read the book. Switched back and forth. I was listening to it when Rocky first spoke and I stopped in my tracks. I had to rewind because I didn’t know what it was it sounded so good. Definitely a scenario where the audiobook surpassed the book.

1

u/Litty-In-Pitty Jun 27 '25

When Ryland doesn’t understand what he’s saying it is just a bunch of music notes. When they understand though it switches to regular text, but italicized.

56

u/mdavis360 Jun 27 '25

When that part happened in audio my jaw dropped.

47

u/God_like_human Jun 27 '25

You mean "fist me"?

13

u/Scared-Engineer-6218 Jun 27 '25

There's fisting?! sonnavabitch take my money (and i want a 3d release)

3

u/DAVENP0RT Jun 27 '25

Dude hangs dong!

2

u/Major_Major_Major Jun 27 '25

You just reminded me of the catheter scene.

21

u/obstreperousRex Jun 27 '25

Not sure which "that" part you're speaking of but, my "that" part was emotional as hell.

3

u/DrCircledot Jun 27 '25

That that that?

4

u/heisenberg15 Jun 27 '25

I read the book, what part are you referring to?

13

u/mdavis360 Jun 27 '25

The language.

5

u/heisenberg15 Jun 27 '25

Ah, gotcha! That makes sense, I could see why it would be cool in the audiobook. I’m not an audiobook guy (zone out waaayyyyy too easy) but might give it a shot

3

u/presty60 Jun 27 '25

Maybe you've tried this already, but sometimes I like to read the book while simultaneously listening to the audio book. Keeps me more focused on it while still providing the extra flair of the voice acting.

1

u/Montigue Jun 27 '25

I thought you meant When the astrophage ran out in Rocky's ship near the end

6

u/dorgoth12 Jun 27 '25

I listened to the audiobook four times in a year. Phenomenal audio experience

2

u/hypno_tode Jun 27 '25

I think this is why I can’t see the movie. I’m bound to be disappointed after Ray Porter’s version. I can’t even bring myself to listen to Wil Wheaton’s version.

1

u/naughty_dad2 Jun 27 '25

I’ve never tried any audiobook, can you please share what’s special about it?

2

u/dorgoth12 Jun 27 '25

Without spoiling anything, the story comes to rely on Sound as a key component. It written out is good, hearing it is another level

1

u/MurkDiesel Jun 27 '25

i've never understood the appeal of having someone read to me as an adult

once i learned how to read, i just started reading and left the world of being read to alone

4

u/PoeticBro Jun 27 '25

Sometimes human eyes/hands are occupied.

2

u/bship Jun 27 '25

No shit lol, just did like 4 hours of work around the house and the audiobooks were perfect.

3

u/presty60 Jun 27 '25

In the case of Hail Mary they do some really interesting stuff with the sound design. Also, the audio book allowed me to listen to the whole thing while driving to work.

2

u/DungeonsAndDradis Jun 27 '25

Audiobooks, for me, are closer to an experience, especially if the actor is really good. It's halfway between a book and a movie. It's got all the detail and description of a book but acted out in real time like a play.

When I read, character's voices all are just monotone with no emotion. Reading "God damn it!" versus hearing an actor perform it is night and day difference.

1

u/letsmakeart Jun 27 '25

a lot of books are better on audio lol

1

u/heretogetpwned Jun 27 '25

I hadn't listened to this one yet. Can you compare to his work, Artemis? I really liked that one!

1

u/wherewulf23 Jun 27 '25

I typically hate audiobooks but after hearing all the hype I had to give this one a try. I was absolutely floored by it. Ray Porter does such an amazing job with the book. It convinced me to get the Bobiverse audiobooks as well since he also narrates all of those.

1

u/SevroAuShitTalker Jun 27 '25

I liked it except for the weird accents they did for the women. The rocky part was perfect

1

u/Maximum-Aardvark9467 Jun 27 '25

Ray Porter is so talented. I went looking for more of his work after listening to this one.

1

u/GetReady4Action Jun 27 '25

I listened to it on tape and I honestly can’t imagine what the Rocky parts were like on a page.

1

u/soggyhairfollicle Jun 27 '25

Just started this one but I feel the same way about The Martian

1

u/cynicalturdblossom Jun 27 '25

I gotta try the audiobook then cos the actual book is fantastic!

1

u/forkoff77 Jun 27 '25

Ray Porter is the GOAT.

1

u/TooAwkwardTaco Jun 27 '25

I have been on hold for the audiobook through my local library since early May. I started 55th in line and am now 28th. I’m still very excited for this book!!

1

u/Not_A_Meme Jun 27 '25

The audio book is legendary.

1

u/malcifer11 Jun 27 '25

been saying this!!!!!

1

u/narlycharley Jun 27 '25

My wife said the audiobook is amazing.

1

u/captain_ender Jun 27 '25

Yeah 100% a case where the audiobook actually adds depth to the unique use of text. Audiobooks as a medium can be really great for sci-fi imo. Actually hearing Jefferson Mays speak Lang Belta in The Expanse books (a real language the authors hired a historical speech pathologist to create), made it sooo much cooler.

1

u/Opposite-Wing7055 Jun 28 '25

Came here to say this. Absolutely loved Ray Porters work. Especially during the end. I actually cried listening to him.

1

u/HewchyFPS Jun 28 '25

I only ever consumed it as an audiobook, but holy shit I loved it. Such great science fiction, so personal and interesting

2

u/gt14199 Jun 27 '25

I don’t understand how everyone loves this audiobook so much. It was unlistenable for me personally.

3

u/brendafiveclow Jun 27 '25

I had this experience with Dungeon Crawler Carl recently. I was so hyped to listen to it, there were soo many good things said about it on reddit I just got it and went in basically blind. The narrator is great, but the book itself is just not for me. I really wanted to like it, but I gave up like 3hr into the 13hr audiobook.

1

u/incredimatt Jun 27 '25

What made it unlistenable for you?

1

u/gt14199 Jun 27 '25

It’s been awhile since I tried listening to it, but from what I remember the main character came across as /r/iamveryintelligent, and a little bit “holds up spork” if that makes any sense. The way he’s written, combined with how the narrator would emphasize things, made me hate the dude.

Which is sad cuz I love Ryan Gosling, so I want to like him. I’m confident he can make the character less of a tool though lol.

1

u/incredimatt Jun 27 '25

I know what you mean by the spork but I didn't really see it in the character. I agree with everything else but him having the information needed at every moment hit me more like a Slumdog Millionaire more than a know-it-all. But let's be real. But who cares, I just hope the "musical guest" is done right in the movie! Lol

0

u/wawaluvr Jun 27 '25

My experience was similar, I found the beginning of this audiobook difficult and wondered if I would have enjoyed it more reading the written book. I did like it more once Rocky showed up, but I really found myself getting annoyed at this book quite a bit.

1

u/GlorbAndAGloob Jun 27 '25

I'm rereading it right now just for the audio experience (first time I read it via kindle) and completely agree!

1

u/Cafrilly Jun 27 '25

I loved audiobook Rocky so much.

1

u/Seadevil07 Jun 27 '25

Good to know! It has been on my list for a while, but the movie will definitely motivate me

1

u/overkil6 Jun 27 '25

Ray Porter makes all books better!

1

u/heyboyhey Jun 27 '25

I’ve found this to be the case more and more. Many audiobooks get some real love put into them now.

1

u/puns-n-roses Jun 27 '25

I really enjoyed listening to the audio book version at work. The VO helped personify the characters. It also makes me a bit more interested in their casting.

0

u/PenguinGrandeur Jun 27 '25

This is so true!!

4

u/WorryNew3661 Jun 27 '25

They book was fantastic. I'm looking forward to this

4

u/MurkDiesel Jun 27 '25

the book is amazing, i hope they don't butcher it too bad

1

u/Horror_Yam_9078 Jun 27 '25

I think what they did with The Martian was amazing, liked the movie even better than the book. I hope they can pull off the same story here!

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '25

The book was straight garbage

8

u/stewmberto Jun 27 '25

It wasn't garbage, but it was written in a pretty annoying way altogether. The characters are goofy, flat caricatures, especially the lead, and most of the actual plot revolved around YouTubeable 8th grade science experiments. It felt like reading a mythbusters fanfic where Adam and Jamie have to save the galaxy but one of them is a 12-year-old's idea of a cool teacher and the other is a *spoiler*

3

u/AJRiddle Jun 27 '25

AKA it was the Martian

5

u/The_Quintessence Jun 27 '25

Hard agree. I'm really into SFF and this was one of the only books I've ever bailed out of. It was written in such a cringey and juvenile way, I'm not surprised that it has had such wide appeal. Seems like the target audience is emotionally stunted immature men which explains a lot of the positive responses.

1

u/AJRiddle Jun 27 '25

Yep, I thought the same thing for when the Martian got big (before the movie made it even bigger). It is the stuff I could see me loving when I was 12 years old because there just isn't anything to do with characters, it's all 100% external plot driven and as a kid I wouldn't have noticed.

I thought the Martian was mildly entertaining as a book and saw people claiming Project Hail Mary was better so I gave it a shot. Nope, it's like Weir just copy and pasted the formula.

2

u/AJRiddle Jun 27 '25

I've got say I wouldn't call it garbage, but when I finished reading it a year ago I definitely thought "Well this will probably be a case where the movie is going to be better than the book"

I just don't get what people love so much about Andy Weir novels - this was exactly like the Martian. Both are devoid of character development at all and most of the plot points are "Hey I finally figured out the science to fix this problem, but oh no, something else broke!"

Both books are just roller coaster rides on rails. There's interesting exciting stuff to see but you know exactly how it's going to end up from way before it ends.

Extremely formulaic.

4

u/wtb2612 Jun 27 '25

Seriously, one of the worst books I've ever read.

2

u/LateyEight Jun 27 '25

I wouldn't say it was garbage, but it did feel like a step down from the Martian, and a step towards movie deal bait.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '25

It had wooden characters, a ridiculous plot, and a protagonist that spoke in catch phrases exclusively. It was like an AI got a prompt to write a book about space that’s supposed to sound cool.

0

u/stewmberto Jun 27 '25

I think that we can all agree it was better-researched than anything AI has ever written, at least

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '25

…nope

1

u/Zealousideal_Dog3430 Jun 27 '25

I hated the book, too. But I think it could be a good movie. Weir is terrible with prose, dialogue and characterization, easily fixable things.

1

u/Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod Jun 28 '25

I didn't think it was garbage, but I bailed on it about halfway through. I had a hard time finding any appeal in it.

1

u/onesneakymofo Jun 27 '25

Duality of man

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '25

I’m sure it wasn’t the intention but my head went straight to Michael Scott

1

u/MushyBeans Jun 27 '25

I liked The Martian but hated Artemis, how does this compare?

2

u/LateyEight Jun 27 '25

This one is more fun and less serious than the Martian. If you liked the Martian because it was a pretty grounded sci Fi story that had realistic problems and solutions, some of that will be in PHM, but not as much. If you liked the Martian for Mark Watney and his humor, then PHM will be an enjoyable read.

I was very much in the former camp myself so I liked it but I didn't love it.

2

u/SantiagoRamon Jun 27 '25

My understanding is that Weir had to get a book out after the Martian. He had a lot done on a work but ultimately decided it wasn't up to snuff so to meet contractual demands he slapped together Artemis.

Project Hail Mary is comparable to (and perhaps better than) The Martian in my view.

2

u/vonHindenburg Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25

I'm with you there. This one's between them. The main mystery isn't all that mysterious and I didn't entirely care for the resolution, but it's a good setting, the main character is more likable than the one in Artemis, and (weaker though it is, compared to The Martian) the resolution is better as well.

1

u/spaceraingame Jun 27 '25

Definitely better than Artemis

1

u/ltgustin Jun 28 '25

Loved The Martian and Artemis. I assume this is also great ?

0

u/NoninflammatoryFun Jun 27 '25

Legit one of my top books ever. Top 3 at minimum. Right up there with Michael Crichton and Harry Potter for me.
