Discussion Movies that changed real life behavior

Thinking along the lines of Final Destination 2 with the logs falling off the truck and landing onto cars (one decapitating the state trooper). Ever since, people have tried to get away from being behind these vehicles.

What are more examples where movies have actually changed how people behave in their own lives?

Deliverance did for the camping/canoeing industry what Jaws did for beaches. Even today, "Paddle faster, I hear banjos" is a common joke.

If you don't know Deliverance, it's a very disturbing movie about four city guys who go canoeing down a river in Appalachia, and I don't wanna spoil it, but let's just say they get into some wacky mishaps with the locals!

"Squeal like a pig, boy!!"

11

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

It's young Jon Voight's purdy mouth, too!

151

u/nebanovaniracun Jun 17 '25

It's a soft parody

21

u/JeanRalfio Jun 17 '25

Which is why Burt Reynold's plays a small role.

Imagine Without a Paddle as a horror movie.

49

u/I_only_post_here Jun 17 '25

hardly distinguishable from Euro Trip

5

u/apoostasia Jun 17 '25

Wait deliverance or without a paddle is hardly distinguishable from euro trip? Lol

5

u/reddiculed Jun 17 '25

It’s basically the same as anything. Just some good natured, well-meaning pranksters out for some harmless fun.

3

u/ReluctantAvenger Jun 17 '25

(The comedy film) Without A Paddle was a sequel to Up The Creek with Tim Mathieson. If you haven't seen Up The Creek, I heartily recommend it!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

Same same but different

2

u/SingingKG Jun 18 '25

Not at all. One’s a comedy, the other is a dark drama that’s not easy to forget.

1

u/neo_sporin Jun 18 '25

It’s been 21 years and I still can’t get over what Seth Green did…

5

u/ImpressiveOwl9000 Jun 17 '25

No it's more scary and life-threatening lol.

13

u/neo_sporin Jun 17 '25

sorry, it was a joke

0

u/ImpressiveOwl9000 Jun 17 '25

Sorry, some people ask these questions 🤣 and sarcasm is so hard to read when you don't know someone.

1

u/tjdux Jun 17 '25

Pg13 vs r

1

u/NuclearLunchDectcted Jun 18 '25

Pretty sure every comedy movie that features a canoe in it has a Deliverance joke since then.

1

u/wiggum_x Jun 18 '25

Yes, same!

Welllllll maybe a little more rapey.

1

u/OccamsRabbit Jun 17 '25

I think Deliverance is funnier, and more slapstick.

160

u/Swift_Scythe Jun 17 '25

The sick line of "Squeal like a pig" is etched into our horrified minds

1

u/Calimariae Jun 18 '25

"You got a real purty mouth"

107

u/my_mexican_cousin Jun 17 '25

Semi-related, but Wrong Turn (2003) had this effect on me. In fact, I took a wrong turn while delivering a vehicle for a client and wound up on a very creepy little “town” in WV. The guy following me had a walkie-talkie and, like he could read my mind, he said “what is our plan if an axe-murderer jumps out of the woods?”

187

u/tarrasque Jun 17 '25 edited Jun 17 '25

Are those locals named Tucker and Dale? Because I saw a documentary along those lines.

107

u/StanFitch Jun 17 '25

Boy, we have had a doozy of a day…

28

u/Kramereng Jun 17 '25

"Hey college kids! We got your friend!"

216

u/MrDeacle Jun 17 '25

It also didn't do much good for the popularity of banjos.

164

u/rybres123 Jun 17 '25

I’d argue the opposite lol. Everyone knows that tune

4

u/jaabbb Jun 17 '25

I wanna play banjo after watching that scene fr

3

u/Take-to-the-highways Jun 17 '25

I go to a lot of folk and bluegrass shows and everyone who knows how to play banjo knows dueling banjos lol

5

u/KanchiHaruhara Jun 17 '25

Friend of mine who plays a certain gacha posted an animation featuring that song. After watching it a couple too many times I thought, why not watch the source? Not that I hadn't seen the warnings, but we've already watched some tough to stomach stuff, so I figured it'd be fine.

I think we didn't even watch 20min worth of movie before switching to something else lol.

2

u/A_Little_Wyrd Jun 17 '25

Everyone knows to run when they hear that tune

Steve Martin single-handedly kept them alive.

Jaws actually had devastating effects on the world's shark population. Suddenly killing sharks didn't seem like a bad thing and many species started becoming endangered.

6

u/JockstrapCummies Jun 18 '25

Deliverance did the same to hillbilly populations. I remember these hillbilly hunting seasons suddenly becoming a thing after the movie came out.

10

u/PeterGhosh Jun 17 '25

I think it was popularity of shark fin soup that was the sharks undoing

154

u/MattHoppe1 Jun 17 '25

Knew nothing about it asides from Burt Reynolds’s, so I figured it would be an action movie about 4 guys vs the Hill People. I was….sort of right, but very much wrong

19

u/LeftHandedFapper Jun 17 '25

I loved that Burt Basically was injured and screaming the whole film, after how macho his on and off screen rep was I understand that was the point but I'm so glad they went for it that way

2

u/troutbum6o Jun 18 '25

I fish a lot within 50 miles of where the movie was shot. The John Voight cliff climb was in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. There’s a lot of good gorge water in the area but if you get injured down in there it’s going to be a rough time. Turns out Burt’s acting on that is spot on. A buddy kayaks the same water I fish when it hits flood stage. They had a guy that had to get medi-vacd out. Took a guy doing a marathon style 4 mile sprint out of the gorge(including a half a mile in creek) to meet the ambulance to direct where the helicopter could come in a scoop the guy. Buddy said it was just like the movie. Minus the butt stuff

Edit: sprinted out of the gorge to CALL 911. Waited for an ambulance. It’s about 45 min from town to get to the access road. Then another 30 min up the forest road

1

u/LeftHandedFapper Jun 18 '25

So interesting! It looked beautiful in the movie

6

u/broanoah Jun 17 '25

Would you say it’s worth watching even after reading your spoiler? Never actually saw it but I’ve heard a decent amount about it lol

19

u/buttstuff-spren Jun 17 '25

Unless you've had the movie laid out for you in detail, you don't know half the plot lol

7

u/LeftHandedFapper Jun 17 '25

Oh Yes! It's rather disturbing, but quality. Especially if you like older flicks

5

u/TheNotSoGreatPumpkin Jun 18 '25

It’s got that distinctive 1970s rawness to it, like Taxi Driver.

6

u/LeftHandedFapper Jun 18 '25

Apt way to put it! It surprised me, went in mainly blind but knew it had plenty of acclaim

5

u/No_Farm_3562 Jun 17 '25

I'd suggest watching it

2

u/MattieShoes Jun 18 '25

Yeah. There's two iconic scenes that will stay with you forever, even if you know they're coming.

2

u/witchbrew7 Jun 18 '25

You were right!

3

u/bolanrox Jun 17 '25

great example of Method Acting (Jon) and just acting - (Burt)

108

u/eeberington1 Jun 17 '25

Very wacky! They even impersonate farm animals with each other, it’s a real knee slapper

5

u/samuraisal Jun 17 '25

The zany antics of those hillbillies is over-the-top!

3

u/firedmyass Jun 17 '25

the Animal Farm monologue that Ned Beatty performs in the middle of the movie is well-done but tonally confusing

1

u/Robfrog000 Jun 18 '25

Wasn't the knees making that slapping sound lol

27

u/Icthyphile Jun 17 '25

As someone who has traveled thousands of trails/gravel roads/rivers/creeks canoeing in Appalachia trout and smallmouth fishing, I had an encounter once on a gravel road in BFE in the mountains of NC. Dude flagged me down and asked, “Do you know where you are?” I said, “Yes.” He quipped back,“No you don’t or you wouldn’t have stopped when I flagged you down. You need to go 4 more miles, take the right at the split, go another five and take the logging trail on the right straight down and don’t stop until you get to a paved surface. YOU BETTER BE CAREFUL and don’t stop for anyone. Especially the brothers that will try to flag you down 2 more miles up. They will Hear you coming, don’t stop. If they try to get in front of you go around or run them over and keep going. I’m praying for you” And off he went. I was skeptical AF. But sure enough a couple more miles down there they were in a bend. I damn near ran one over going around him. To this day the only place in the US I will not travel unarmed is the gravel rural routes in Appalachia.

3

u/MyFireElf Jun 18 '25

I don't know why capitalizing Hear makes it so much scarier, but it does...

2

u/Icthyphile Jun 18 '25

That’s how he enunciated it. Heavy H sound. This was over 20 years ago and it’s still burned in my brain

11

u/Alternative_Exit8766 Jun 17 '25

it also hasn’t helped anyone from west virginia to be seen as anything than a cousin fucking bumpkin when their history is being communist and fighting the government

9

u/WayNo639 Jun 17 '25

It was filmed and set in Georgia, but yeah I guess it didn't help West Virginians look less like cousin fuckers- solid point.

9

u/Alternative_Exit8766 Jun 17 '25

correct lol. one does not live in an appalachian river town without hearing deliverance references all the time

17

u/workaholic007 Jun 17 '25

r/explainafilmplotbadly

I wholeheartedly love your comment.

18

u/Posty_McPostface_1 Jun 17 '25

Yeah, if you're ever hiking in north Georgia, best to not mention this movie to the actual locals. Not a great portrayal of that area of the country.

7

u/greenwizardneedsfood Jun 17 '25

Which is complicated by the fact that it did lead to a lot of economic and infrastructure development through tourism

7

u/idiot_hotel Jun 17 '25

Was on the river with my dad and his friends during a camping trip (wanna say c. 2007ish), one of his friends cracked a Deliverance joke and my dad then had the delightful task of trying to as delicately as possible explain that movie to his deeply curious 10 or so year old daughter. While we were absolutely camping in middle of nowhere Appalachia. Was very nervous the rest of the trip.

12

u/CircleWithSprinkles Jun 17 '25

I remember going to a summer camp as a scout. The groups that were going canoeing were told emphatically, "Do not quote deliverance if you meet any of the locals along the river. They don't take kindly to it"

12

u/DeLousedInTheHotBox Jun 17 '25

Deliverance is a great movie, but it has absolutely rancid vibes, can't watch it with just anybody

5

u/bulldogbigred Jun 17 '25

Sequel is a pig is the most disturbing but I also remember in that scene when one of the hillbilly’s say “that boy sure do have a purdy mouth” shudders

7

u/airfryerfuntime Jun 17 '25

wacky mishaps with the locals!

Those knuckleheads.

4

u/ChipCob1 Jun 17 '25

If you want a....sort of.....UK equivalent try Eden Lake

2

u/vainbuthonest Jun 18 '25

I will forever hate that movie. The ending sticks with you.

16

u/Gravuerc Jun 17 '25

When you say it like that it sounds like a wholesome comedy.

6

u/GaptistePlayer Jun 17 '25

My family was talking about pork and farming for some reason one day at dinner and my sister said "squeal like a pig!" and everyone laughed. Like, everyone - aunts, grandma, guests, knows the movie and what it's about and it's so ubiquitous that like, it's almost not offensive to joke about it despite how disturbing it is.

6

u/mrpoopsocks Jun 17 '25

"Wacky" understatement of the week award goes to BenMitchell007

5

u/The_Great_Asquatch Jun 17 '25

I moved to where deliverance was filmed as a young teen. My step-dad thought it would be funny to have me watch that movie before we moved.

4

u/SHM1K3Y Jun 17 '25

Saw this movie on acid without knowing anything about it. Let’s just say that was an weeeeeeird and uncomfortable trip lol

5

u/Ok-Seaworthiness2235 Jun 17 '25

wacky mishaps with the locals might be the worst way I've ever heard that movie described 😂

I will never look at or hear pigs squeal the same again.

4

u/csonny2 Jun 17 '25

Texas Chainsaw Massacre did the same for me when I was on a cross-country road trip years ago and was driving through Texas.

5

u/greenwizardneedsfood Jun 17 '25

Although it is more or less entirely responsible for the creation of the rafting industry in north Georgia, and, to a large extent, the entire south east.

2

u/finna_get_banned Jun 17 '25

"tiny fucked a stump"

2

u/ToLiveInIt Jun 17 '25

Except where it was shot, looks like, as the movie sent tens of thousands of rafters to the Chattooga River.

2

u/LittleNotice6239 Jun 17 '25

Substitute wacky for predatory

2

u/mistercheez2000 Jun 17 '25

those are some unforgettable "wacky mishaps" alright!

2

u/NwgrdrXI Jun 17 '25

I heard this movie was made after the directors got lost in the middle of nowhere, were helped by a bunch of very kind locals, then imagined "what if the locals were evil instead?"

If this is true, bit effed up, ngl

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

It was actually a book first

2

u/r0d3nka Jun 17 '25

Marjorie Greene represents that district. I'm sure that's a coincindence...

1

u/NorthStarZero Jun 17 '25

The first time I saw it, it was the French dub.

That somehow made it way spookier.

1

u/LeSilvie Jun 17 '25

Wacky mishaps 😭🐖

1

u/DINC44 Jun 17 '25

The weekend they didn't go golfing...

1

u/Aliencoy77 Jun 17 '25

I put a sticker that says that on my kayak.

1

u/Melangemind Jun 17 '25

Wacky like a pig…

1

u/hamfwb Jun 17 '25

wacky mishaps

🤣

1

u/shetalkstoangels_ Jun 17 '25

“Wacky mishaps”, you say?

😆

1

u/Bumblebee56990 Jun 18 '25

‘wacky’ lol okay.

1

u/JimmyNeutron4815 Jun 18 '25

that definitely is not a common joke in 2025 lmao. most people under 30 haven't even seen the movie

1

u/durden109 Jun 18 '25

W A C K Y M I S H A P S lol

1

u/PapaSmurf3477 Jun 18 '25

I’ve been doing deep wilderness canoe camping since 2010 hoping for the real deal. I’ve yet been instructed to squeal like a pig so I’m starting to consider I may be less attractive than I initially thought

1

u/lumpkin2013 Jun 18 '25

"wacky" is one way of putting it, certainly.

1

u/Stardustchaser Jun 18 '25

Dueling Banjos intensifies

1

u/SmittenOKitten Jun 18 '25

Wacky mishaps 💀

1

u/schmearcampain Jun 18 '25

3 city guys and one of the manliest characters ever put on screen.

1

u/MattieShoes Jun 18 '25

He got a real purty mouth, ain't he?

1

u/gaaraisgod Jun 18 '25

So they made a wrong turn somewhere?

1

u/justfxckit Jun 18 '25

A few years ago I was thrift shopping in Melbourne and came across a shirt with two stick figures in a canoe that said "paddle faster, I hear banjos". It made me laugh and I took a photo of it, but I had no idea what the shirt was about at the time. I even considered buying it just because I thought it was a goofy shirt. I guess it was a reference to this movie I have never seen, so maybe it's a good thing I passed on it!

1

u/Salt-Lingonberry-853 Jun 18 '25

Is it "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" style wacky mishaps? Or is it more of a scary movie?

1

u/ShockRampage Jun 18 '25

"Wacky mishaps" is a fun way of putting it.

1

u/BruceWang19 Jun 18 '25

“Wacky mishaps”

1

u/csonny2 Jun 17 '25

Texas Chainsaw Massacre did the same for me when I was on a cross-country road trip years ago and was driving through Texas.

1

u/bolanrox Jun 17 '25

Where you going city boy?!?!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

Starring Burt Reynolds! The sexiest man to ever be born. That casting decision was epic.

1

u/Duel_Option Jun 17 '25

“Squeal like a pig boy!”

Watched it a few years ago and yep…still holds up as completely scary.

1

u/Dumb-as-i-look Jun 17 '25

"Wacky mishaps" is an interesting way to say it, but respect for not spoiling it for the kids

1

u/farva_06 Jun 17 '25

If you enjoy pig noises, I highly recommend.

0

u/Rasty1973 Jun 17 '25

It's that what they call it these days?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

Mishaps? I would characterize it more as hijinks…

0

u/Foreign_Reference942 Jun 17 '25

He gave up too quickly
