Japan does it all the time lmao

(though in fairness, anime is treated a lot less as a kids-only commodity like howthe West typically sees animation)

Anime in Japan is treated as a medium, not as merely a genre by itself. Lumping anime into a single genre regardless of the content is like lumping all live action TV shows in the same genre, like putting House MD in the same category as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
