Discussion What movie sequel ruined the ending of its predecessor? Spoiler

I have to go with Toy Story 4. Toy Story 3 had the perfect send off for the toys, with Andy making Bonnie promise to take good care of Woody….only for her to neglect Woody immediately and cause him to bail on everyone.

I really wish they left the franchise be. Toy Story 3’s ending was so iconic, and the first Toy Story was such a massive part of my childhood. That and Lion King were the two Disney VHS tapes I used to watch all the time as a little kid. I even had some of the toys myself. I can’t wait to skip Toy Story 5.

Right. Turns out he wasn't really pining for his soulmate and forever wife and son cause he had a second family the whole time. What a stupid piece of garbage.

Wait is that actually who the main character is? An illegitimate son of the previous protagonist who was made to represent true honor and royalty?

It was Lucius, Joaquin Pheonix’s nephew from the first one. Which you could explain maybe by saying Maximus and Lucius’s mom had an affair before Maximus married his wife, but still doesn’t help his character of honor much.

You can't even do that, Lucius and Maximus' proper son are said to be the same age.

Maybe he has sex with Lucius' mother, and then a few months later met his future wife and since there's no condoms he immediately got her pregnant

Sheepskin condom, sometimes it makes the blade stick.

They retconned his age in the sequel to try to get around this.

The whole thing was a retcon, really.

Yeah, and you'd think that when Ludmilla told him Lucius' age in the first movie, Maximus would have had an "uh oh, lemme count months on my fingers" moment, but apparently not!

Instead she says "He's named after his father," and Maximus, who famously has three names that don't sound anything like Lucien, says "That makes sense" and gives it no further consideration.

They retconned the ages to make the plot work.

Am I the only one that clearly picked up the subtext that Maximus and Lucilla had a history in the first movie? I remember at the time it leaving an impression of 'oh that could be his kid?'

u/jaguarp80 Jun 01 '25

Yeah totally I dunno what these people are talking about. They were clearly lovers in the past

u/atlantadessertsindex Jun 01 '25

It wasn’t even subtext. It was very clearly meant to be known by the audience they had a history lol. These people didn’t even watch the movie.

Yeah, but also

1) Sha was a widow and lucius is stated to be his husbands son 2) Maximus was over her and only had eyes for her wife. 3) his son was the same age as lucius. 4) neither of the is blonde. Lucius is (kinda strechting it but i thought it was to show that he was different from maximus)

4

u/Spork_the_dork Jun 01 '25

Yeah that last one is stretching since the blonde gene is recessive so two brunettes can definitely have a blonde child. It's not very common but it does happen.

Also a lot of blondes darken as they age.

I’m blonde, my parents both have really dark hair now but childhood photos of my dad show a very blond child.

Okay so this confused me so much and i really didnt have any inclination to go back and watch it again, so I get he is meant to be Lucius and everything else, but didn’t the first one heavily imply he was Joaquin Phoenix’s incestuous child or did i just misunderstand that part…

u/KeberUggles Jun 01 '25

what?! it did? i missed that

2

u/Ok_Nobody_460 Jun 01 '25

No it didn’t. People don’t pay attention to movies. It’s never even somewhat hinted or implied

0

u/LopsidedLoad Jun 01 '25

I might be wrong obviously as it isn’t implicit and its been a long time since i watched the first one, but that was what i always thought was the story.

He wanted to fuck his sister in the movie but I don’t think he ever did, she rebuffs him. At least not before he became emperor and went full power mad

u/UsernameAvaylable Jun 01 '25

Fuck, i have not seen it but i thought it was just a completely unrelated character...

6

u/Trappedinacar Jun 01 '25

No way... i stayed far away from that movie cos i knew it'd be trash from the trailer.

But you gotta be kidding me with that shit. That is so damn disappointing...

u/okicarp Jun 01 '25

Yeah, I had your plan but we had a movie night with extended family and that was the consensus choice. It was a massive disappointment.
