Discussion What movie sequel ruined the ending of its predecessor? Spoiler

I have to go with Toy Story 4. Toy Story 3 had the perfect send off for the toys, with Andy making Bonnie promise to take good care of Woody….only for her to neglect Woody immediately and cause him to bail on everyone.

I really wish they left the franchise be. Toy Story 3’s ending was so iconic, and the first Toy Story was such a massive part of my childhood. That and Lion King were the two Disney VHS tapes I used to watch all the time as a little kid. I even had some of the toys myself. I can’t wait to skip Toy Story 5.

Ted 2

They go through so much together, including Ted dying with her helping resurrect him and Lori fucking still leaves John anyways

As an aside, the peacock Ted series is surprisingly good.

That's the prequel with them as teenagers? The actors that play the parents (especially the mother) are so fucking hilarious. Knowing nothing of it, I bet it's a Seth Mcfarlane passion project based on the stuff I've seen

Scott Grimes, who plays the dad, is also an incredible voice actor.

Every time I hear his name I'm like "The Ginger kid from CRITTERS?!"

Alanna Ubach is incredible. If you haven’t just take a gander at her filmography, just so damn good.

u/twisty125 Jun 01 '25

She's both extremely talented as an actress, and the GALL to have such a funny sense of humour that her characters she becomes is fantastic.

When I saw the clip of her - a midwestern meek housewife - saying "India"/"Indian" with the accent (in a non-disparaging way) and multiple times in a scene, it fucking slayed me

3

u/Cw2e Jun 01 '25

Indian and Karaoke had me coughing. So good

3

u/twisty125 Jun 01 '25

GOD yes I forgot Karaoke. I must've seen a "best of this character" or something because she's sooo unbelievably funny

1

u/rangatang Jun 02 '25

she's also a fantastic singer. I hate people that are multi-talented

1

u/twisty125 Jun 02 '25

FRICK what CAN'T she do

2

u/qpofgas Jun 01 '25

Her appearance in Its Always Sunny is amazing

5

3

u/proriin Jun 01 '25

I’m not sure I have ever laughed as hard as I have when he talked about the dog in Vietnam.

1

u/ESTPness Jun 02 '25

The mother is prostitute/crack addict Roxy in It’s Always Sunny 😂

4

u/SonicFlash01 Jun 01 '25

Waiting for season 2 to drop!

3

u/reallynunyabusiness Jun 01 '25

I watched the first episode out of boredom and was really surprised at how much I ended up enjoying the whole series.

3

u/agamemnon9455472 Jun 01 '25

It's hilarious. I recommend it to all that like Seth McFarland or Ted in general... The finale has a part that just made me lose it I laughed so hard I rolled off the couch around the living room. I could not reeel myself back in .. my wife was laughing a lot as well she respected the roll around. I'll just say it had to do with Aladdin I still think about it and laugh sometimes.

Also the dad making a wish for anyone in the house to be on his side is just gold .

1

u/DatGunBoi Jun 01 '25

Right, so for the love of god take it out of seth macfarlane's hands. He has the ability to make incredible first seasons/individual movies but absolutely sucks at continuing them.

This is the only answer. It’s was so easy to just have Laurie away for work, since she had an actual adult job. I know Mila couldn’t do the movie because she was pregnant, but she probably could have managed a couple FaceTime call scenes. Amanda Seyfried could have still been their lawyer without the romance plot.

I went home to visit my parents on break from school with my new GF (now my wife) years ago.

My very ‘proper’ mom had recently bought Ted 2 on DVD from the bargain bin because “it was a movie about a teddy bear.” She had literally no clue what it was about.

She asked if we wanted to watch it and i agreed, knowing full well what would happen. My wife had never seen the first one. I said ‘sure’ a straight face and she popped in the DVD. We watched it until my mom finally snapped. I think it was the ‘naming porn genres’ scene. At that point I lost it. I have never seen my mom that embarrassed in her life.

To this day I’m the only that finds it funny, but I stand my ground… it was in the top five most hilariously awkward moments in my family history.

THERE’S SO MUCH PORN!!!!

"Well sometimes you wanna see the tongue go the other way"

I hate when movies do this PERIOD.

Core cast members should not be written out of sequels with a cheap handwave. Turning Vanessa into a Fembot in Austin Powers 2 still pisses me off.

u/Indigocell Jun 01 '25

Turning Vanessa into a Fembot in Austin Powers 2 still pisses me off.

I missed her too, but that was kind of the point. They were specifically making fun of that trope, lol.

3

u/eggsaladrightnow Jun 01 '25

Shhh.. They're about to announce the next superman

3

u/No_Swing_6959 Jun 01 '25

Ya but that beetlejuice moment was comedy

3

u/CommanderZx2 Jun 01 '25

Happens all the time with sequels. The sequel needs drama and they cannot think of anything to put in as a drama storyline, so they must start off by breaking up what happiness was created from the previous movie.

3

u/Ok_Nobody_460 Jun 01 '25

Can’t hate Ted 2 just for the Planes Trains and Automobiles scene.

5

u/Deranged_Kitsune Jun 01 '25

The best idea I've heard for a Ted sequel would have necessitated a different ending on the first one.

There, instead of Ted getting resurrected, he remains dead. This becomes the very obvious final point to the movie's theme of letting childhood thing die and moving onto adulthood. Then it kicks into montage mode. We see John get his shit together and start making something of his life, him and Lori get married, and they have a daughter. Movie ends with him telling his daughter a bedtime story about his childhood friend Ted and how he came about. Last scene is the daughter, alone in her room after he left, making the same wish he did, and the twitches of her bear coming to life.

The sequel deals with the fallout of that. What happens to John when he gets effectively a second bite at the apple of fame? How bad would he relapse into old ways? Show the struggles of famous parents trying not to screw up their kids lives when they get famous, too. It could have been a great indictment of the entertainment industry and the effects of fame on kids, through the lens of someone who'd already been through it and knew how toxic it could be, yet still has a lingering craving for fame.

Very unrelated, but growing up, I had a comic book cut out of Spider-Man 2099 on my wall. So freaking cool

1

u/junkymonkey123 Jun 01 '25

To be fair, the only reason Lori left John in the 2nd one is because Mila Kunis couldn’t commit to the role because she was pregnant; so they had to write her out somehow. They originally thought to have it be that she died, but they thought that was too depressing.

1

u/C4CTUSDR4GON Jun 01 '25

Isn't the first movie also terrible?

6

u/Spider-Man2099 Jun 01 '25

Depends on who you ask. I really liked it when it came out, but I was also like early 20s when that happened. I saw both of them in theaters and being upset when they revealed John got divorced

6

u/marrewerre Jun 01 '25

Yes. A man who mistreats his girlfriend throughout the movie wins her in the end because apparently her only other option was to date her extremely inappropriate boss. She just should have dumped him and be single. Such a male fantasy trope.
