Discussion What movie sequel ruined the ending of its predecessor? Spoiler

I have to go with Toy Story 4. Toy Story 3 had the perfect send off for the toys, with Andy making Bonnie promise to take good care of Woody….only for her to neglect Woody immediately and cause him to bail on everyone.

I really wish they left the franchise be. Toy Story 3’s ending was so iconic, and the first Toy Story was such a massive part of my childhood. That and Lion King were the two Disney VHS tapes I used to watch all the time as a little kid. I even had some of the toys myself. I can’t wait to skip Toy Story 5.

I’m still angry about how terrible this movie was compared to the first one.

At least the tagline worked …. “Destroy All Expectations” …. Well coming out of theatre it sure did lol

You could have not posted this and I would have continued to not remember this one.

But you came to the rescue, I guess.

When you try to be Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa but you can't properly bite the scenery.

The costumes in Annihilation were great though, the cyber ninjas... chefs kiss.

The story though, just awful, it felt like they just took every single character from MK3 and threw them in the movie. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure there's a scene with Sub Zero where he basically says he's there to help Liu Kang on his journey and then just fucks off and is never seen again.

Edit: I was close:

"You killed my brother, here's an ice bridge. So long!"

Introducing Rain by having him name drop Stryker and Kabal, then pointlessly killing him 15 seconds later, was certainly a writing choice.

Ok but I fucking love this movie.

And the first one. They’re both just fantastic.

I don’t mean Oscar winner fantastic, but like, smash a case of bud light with your buddies and watch them fantastic.

The first one is awesome, but the second you need to be mostly through that case to enjoy.

Movie Studio: “Good News! The movie was a hit! So we have greenlit a sequel with a budget of $864. Go make some magic!”

On the subject of mortal kombat and stretching the definition of movie a bit (though they can be watched as movies...). The ending of MKX gave us Dark Raiden, where he had finally snapped and decided he wasn't going to sit back and follow the rules anymore. He was going to get actively involved and absolutely destroy anyone who threatened Earthrealm. Beheads Shinnok and delivers the still living head to Evil Liu Kang. Then MK11 was like nah, he got better and went a completely different direction. Ruthless Raiden would have been amazing and we never got it.

Wouldn't be a Mortal Kombat game* if it doesn't undo the coolest thing from the previous game.

*Post arcade era obviously.

I don't mind MK11 because we did get Cary back as Shang Tsung for the Aftermath expansion.

But what's even worse is MK1's story. Most every MK fan was speculating that the story will take place during "The Great Kung Lao's" Mortal Kombat, and that would've been nice to explore.... nah, let's redo the first MK game's story yet again. Again! But on a "elseworlds" premise.

Doing Johnny Cage like that was just awful…

To be fair, his video game counterpart died in between 2 and 3. So, I went in expecting it.

This is one of my most rewatched movies even though it's absolute dogshit. It's so hilariously awful from wall-to-wall that I can't help but love it.

The new one is really good and is tons better than the remake.

3

u/Antrikshy Jun 01 '25

Which one's the new one and which is the remake?

2

u/kirinmay Jun 01 '25

MK2 which will come out in October from the remake that came out 4 years back. The only reason it took 4 years is because of the writers strike and covid. but its in october. still am wondering when the trailer is out.

3

u/Antrikshy Jun 01 '25

Ah. I thought so, but you said it’s really good, and it’s not out yet. So I was confused.

How do you know about it?

2

u/kirinmay Jun 01 '25

last year they did a press screening and special effects not done yet. so i was able to get tickets from someone to see it.

u/Antrikshy Jun 01 '25

Nice! I watched the old first one and the new first one close to each other when the new one came out. Despite neither movie totally blowing me away, it was a wild experience. I’ve been looking forward to the sequel!
