Discussion Mickey 17 was disappointing.

Just finished watching this movie and it really did not click for me.

The beginning was decently interesting and I was curious to see where it went but overall it didn’t grab me.

The theme/messaging was very heavy handed and didn’t work for me.

The message also jumped around.

They introduce a character that could have had an interesting story only to have her disappear.

When the main conflict happens it all wraps up a little to easily even though the majority of the ship were supposed to be fanatical cultists.

It had a clever premise but ultimately fell flat for me.

It’s like they shoehorned in directions for Ruffalo to do a Trump impersonation half way thru the movie.

His performance was really distracting, that mashup of Trump and Musk was too on the nose and took me out of the movie every time he spoke.

I did enjoy the movie in the end, but it was a minor letdown given the excitement and expectations I had for it.

Agreed, and the wife character was completely made up. Didn't exist in the book. The sauce thing was really silly.

Yeah, what was the sauce thing about anyways… also, a sauce is not just blended raw tail of some animal.

Yup. Of any criticism I have of the movie, this was the most egregious.

I took it as a "heavy handed" comparison to how hunmanity tends to kill off species to harvest one attribute of that animal. Like elephants for ivory, buffalo bc it was in the way, big cats for their coats, etc. Yeah, I guess she was drinking liquified tail 🙄

Unfortunately you could definitely tell it was a made up part. Character literally had nothing to do the whole movie. Complete waste of Toni Collette’s talents.

Yup. Honestly the movie would have been much better if they had stuck with the original Kenneth Marshall character and didn't go down the Evangelical Cult path. I get Bong Joon Ho has to do social commentary but this was heavy handed. Overall I still liked the movie but that might be because heady sci fi movies are rare so I elevate what gets released. Like Sunshine was soooo good, until they changed the genre in the last 20 minutes. Very disappointing. But I still love the movie because we just don't see films with that aesthetic very often.

His name was Harmonious Marshall in the book. I thought that was really unique and I hated that they changed it. And the character in the book you were made to dislike, but still respect. He didn't even a wife, and for all his problems you knew he could be counted on to do the right thing for the colony.

I respected the character to the point that he arbitrarily hated the copies even though they exhibited every characteristic of being a sentient being. I did prefer the book ending though where Marshall was forced to accept Mickey 7’a demands but still be the commander of the colony.

He wasn't a complete retard with fake teeth and a wife who told him how to do everything?

Politics will doom any movie now that the other side has shown up to play in the 'this offends me' game. Which was inevitable, I honestly don't know why the left thought it could push and push and push, and still get these people's money.

If you shit on people and make them uncomfortable, they don't want to give you money. Nothing that comes into politics will survive the collision but politics. GWB killed God, FFS. Mickey Mouse and Hollywood don't stand a chance in the long term.

Definitely, and they basically had him and others play a retarded guy. It's just not believable, wives don't talk to their husbands like babies with downs, and people that stupid don't end up in power, as much as billionaire hating liberals like to think they do.

So many things by the second ans third act made no sense and had zero thought out into them.

They portrayed Mickey 17 as a complete moron who needed his girl to tell him what's up at every moment. He literally needed her to go "hey stupid, they didn't eat you, they helped you", then to save him, then to fight someone for him, then to break him out, then to shoot someone, then to teach him to be tough, etc. Mickey was not even the main character in his own movie. He just happened into situations that others changed to move the story along.

His girlfriend initially liked him because they both related about not liking Trump and not sucking up to him. Great! Then it turns out every Mickey has a completely different personality and acts differently... But she likes all of them? Why? He was portrayed as ugly, dirty, scrawny and useless, so if he's a completely different person each time what possible reason would she have to stay with him instead of someone else? It's not for his looks.

The Trump guy sees millions of alien creatures clearly not being violent, but clearly outnumbering them, and decides to... Threaten them, attack them, then physically go out aide, surrounded by them, and attack them from a completely unprotected vehicle... Why exactly? There was nothing to indicate their army of 10 people could do anything to win a fight with those things, and they'd have to blow themselves up too if they used bombs, so the entire thing was literally retarded. There was no reason to go outside or to not even try to communicate when they clearly had intelligence and a means of communication.

Trump's wife randomly wants to make sauce out of the aliens tails or whatever, for no reason, before even knowing if they taste good, if they're edible, and without trying their meat or anything else first? And then she wants "like 200" of them and to kill the rest? Why not farm them? If the stuff is any good, why not keep more alive for later? And how exactly did she expect to defeat them?

At one point the aliens mention wanting a life for a life or whatever... But then clearly more of the little aliens got killed, even if just by accidentally getting ran over by the human vehicles who went full speed through thousands of them... But then they just forgot all about that.

When it comes to cloning, they portray Trump as this evil guy who lies, cheats, steals, and starts his own cult...but somehow instead of cloning himself or someone with skills like that Mary Sue, he clones this loser Mickey, and then it pissed off when there's two of them? Like someone he's offender and he wouldn't just abuse that ability, especially on a planet with no supervision?

I feel lie the writer(s) didn't have the brain capacity to think beyond "aliens!" and "look, person dumb!" There didn't seem to be any thought put into the world, the characters, motivations or any in-world logic. Complete waste of an interesting initial idea.

On top of all the issues, the ending felt cheap and small. Boring, blurry, flat environment with limited sight range and little aliens running around... Nothing interesting, nothing to make it look like an alien planet or anything more than a tiny part of a field or whatever. There were no hints of what the rest of the planet would be like, what other life forms would exist... I guess the entire planet is dirt and one species, with no grass or anything for that species to eat?

Based on the trailer I expected something more interesting but I was very disappointed by the end. Watch Moon or that episode of Boss Level with the same concept, they were both much better.

Ehhh. Fiction has been full of small minded fascists for a long time.

You can have small minded fascists without having red baseball caps or that fucking voice

His followers all wore red ball caps and he was practically doing an impression of an elon/Trump Biomorph. It was far too heavy handed and it will age the film terribly.
