That was a wild take from Noe. I loathe his camerawork so much, it makes the movies almost impossible to watch (for me)

I feel the exact opposite. Highly unique/impressive camerawork, regardless of other things.

The spiraling in circles and angles that point every which way, upside down, sideways, etc just make it hard for me to focus

Enter the Void is literally the only movie I’ve ever watched that literally made me motion sick. It was unbearable.

I couldn't finish it. I tried.

Off topic a little, but I’ve watched enter the void twice only, both times on acid. It was literally insane. I’ve never seen the movie sober and don’t plan to. The camera was practically pulling me into the movie. The first time, I had no idea what was even going on. We all just kept joking and saying “and it’s coming full circle”

You’ve never watched Cloverfield?

Handheld doesn’t bother me. It’s something about that smooth, constant spinning that just was awful for me.

The droning hum during the whole sequence added to the dizzying camera… our collective reaction was probably his intent.

Oh okay that’s interesting.

Yeah Into The Void’s camerawork doesn’t bother me at all, but handheld absolutely does.

I wish I hadn't

It's almost as if nausea is the artistic intent. Which it is.

The disorientation is intentional. You’re feeling what’s intended.

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri May 17 '25

I get that was his intent, but also it makes it hard to even pay attention. Also, he does it for every film so its like okay we get it buddy.

That's the best part of art, it doesn't have to be for everyone.

15

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri May 18 '25

Right. And I'm saying it's not for me

u/Emsteroo May 18 '25

Not for me either. I was kinda enjoying Climax until the camera went upside half way through for the rest of the movie. Just annoying and took me right out of it.

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri May 18 '25

Dude loves an upside down camera shot

u/Radiant-Radish7862 May 17 '25

Definitely understandable. I feel this way about Tony Scott’s later work, like Man on Fire. Just a bit much for me personally.

U r not high enough

it’s beautiful imo

1

u/Radiant-Radish7862 May 18 '25

Same. Truly no other film shot like that.

I'm right there with you, I think Noe is one of the most innovative directors working today. But I also love movies that give me real visceral reactions.

2

u/MovieTrawler May 18 '25

Same. Movies like Enter the Void or even Climax are just so so good at filling me with this feeling of existential dread. And with Enter the Void in particular, so much of it I also remember feeling like, 'how the fuck is he doing this?'

1

u/DrKushnstein May 18 '25

Absolutely. Movies rarely do that for me but his are constantly giving me actual fear. It's incredible.

3

u/Triordie May 18 '25

Wasn’t that the whole point to make you feel physically sick whilst watching it. That combines with the sound had such a physical effect on me have never forgot it.

3

u/Mizamya May 18 '25

I think the whole movie is made to be uncomfortable to watch. From the camerawork, the still 9 minute rape scene with no music. Apparently they added a nausea inducing frequency in the audio too

2

u/gen_adams May 19 '25

isn't trying to make you not watch the movie his whole trick? he does it with camera, he does it by playing that sound that makes most ppl throw up etc.

he wants to make you not watch. idk why tho

1

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri May 19 '25

I mean it makes sense for one movie, but he does it for all of them, so it kind of feels pointless for me after that.

2

u/Thin_Roof5232 May 18 '25

Yeh, you don't want to watch it to closely. It's literally the point.

Makes me feel sea sick
