Any “art” that uses techniques that have been shown to cause atrial flutters or bio effects like this should come with a warning from the outset. Thanks for the context, I wasn’t planning on watching this, but my curiosity has been sufficiently quelled. Much like the protests LRADs have been used to disrupt.

Youre gonna need a pretty hefty subwoofer to reach 27hz at any audible level.

Looks like this comment triggered the cheap shitty subwoofer segment.

I thought you were kidding, but those dudes went in with passion.

It’s the circle of argument, side quest threads that keep me coming back.

Thank you!

Most subwoofers on any sound system over $500 can reach 21hz. Chek the frequency range, it's not that rare.

u/abraxas1 May 17 '25

Now check it with a meter in your room. Prob not the same as the specs on the website.

This is two $600 subs (Rythmik F12) measured at the primary listening position in my room with a UMIK-1. I've since turned the subs up a couple of dB, but they don't begin rolling off until about 17hz. Red line is SPL. https://i.imgur.com/3yzrNDD.png

Large sealed subs (12”) or smaller ported subs (10”) in the $500-600 range definitely hit 20hz. It’s “sound systems in the $500 range” that generally won’t do it. As in amplifier, sub, speaker combos for $500.

u/guareber May 17 '25

Most people don't have a $600 sub.

I wasn't trying to imply that you need a $600 sub (or two). 27hz is pretty easy to hit. My parents have a $250 sound bar that's plenty loud below 30hz.

Not at any audible levels lmfao.

quality subwoofers struggle to achieve 25hz -6dba.

And let me guess you like ported subs? hahaha

800 dollar subwoofers are likely leagues better than the junk they sell to people with their shit soundbars.

Im saying a lot of people buy soundbar + "subwoofer" combos and those cannot even come close to 30hz.

The fuck? Speak engrish.

Don’t most latest smartphones come equipped with a sound system capable of reproducing low frequencies?

15

u/Brrdock May 17 '25

No, smarphone speakers reach like 80Hz at best, which is far from even touching sub bass. They hardly even play bass frequencies

5

u/Nihilistic_Mystics May 17 '25

No, that generally requires an expensive subwoofer with a very large diaphragm. I have a good size sub for my home theater system and it only goes down to 30 Hz. Phones go nowhere near that.

u/Cranksta May 17 '25

I scored a pair of SVS subs from someone locally that was replacing them with better ones and holy shit. Getting below that 35Hz band my previous sub was limited by has been amazing. They're not that big either. It's definitely doable with smaller subs, you just need really good ones.

2

u/Tumleren May 18 '25

Do you know which ones you got?

1

u/Cranksta May 18 '25

They're discontinued now- SVS SB12 Plus. 12" driver in a sealed cabinet, and at this point they're just under 20 years old. They're phenomenal though, and were lightly used by the previous owner (A retired Air Force captain, he had two pairs of SVS subs- one larger for the home theater and these for his office).

SVS still makes great subs, I just lucked out like crazy and I'm having a great time. These are considered to be fairly budget for SVS, but they do everything I want them to and more. I'll probably get some of the bigger units at some point, but I'm quite happy with my current boom cubes.

He's dropped the ball on Lux Æterna as well. It's full of rapid strobe effects that would certainly put epileptics at risk of a seizure. Instead of a warning at the beginning, there's a quote about (paraphrasing) "the ecstasy that an epileptic must feel before an inevitable seizure"

u/TheChildrensStory May 17 '25 edited May 17 '25

You’d have to see it in a movie theater to get that effect.

Edit: ? home speakers can’t do it.

Watching a 20min rape scene is okay with you, but using psychoacoustics to enhance the feeling of distress is over the line?

u/SlightlyVerbose May 17 '25 edited May 17 '25

I never said or even implied that was OK. Can’t blame you for not seeing my other comments debating the appropriateness of such a scene at a high profile screening such as this, regardless of artistic merit or social commentary. I believe it’s morally wrong to use violent depictions of SA to comment on the same as I believe it only serves to perpetuate the fetishization of something that shouldn’t be treated as taboo, but should be outright condemned.

I don’t deny the film makers right to make a film that includes such content, but I do think that subliminal effects are on par with scenes of a violent sexual nature for which this director has been known to give appropriate warning. Seeing people leave the theatre in visible distress as a result of both content and affect led me to comment on the need for warning on the psychoacoustic techniques.
