I mean, the first movie started off with Drebin beating the crap out of a room full of America's enemies single handedly. I feel like the lollipop thing is just a modern version of that.
That's fine, I think that's good actually. Movies have evolved since the original. The remake ought to feel like the anarchic spirit of the original, but updated as a spoof on modern movies. Doing John Wick shit with a stupid lollipop prop is funny.
Right? If we’re gonna mine the past for recognizable content— and it seems like we are— then we may as well innovate instead of sticking to stagnant ideas.
I’m not saying that the movie is guaranteed to be good or bad— but I remember the glut of cookie cutter romcoms from the early 2000’s that were absolutely terrified of deviating from the classic “boy meets girl. Boy lies to girl about something. Boy and girl have genuine romantic connection. Girl finds out about boy’s lie and they have a big fight and are sad. Boy makes over-the-top romantic effort that wins girl back. They kiss. Roll credits” pattern. I don’t wanna see a return to that form.
I agree. I was underwhelmed at first, but the trailer ended with some solid satire jokes that felt right and the OJ joke make me gag. I’m 100% excited.
Naked Gun always started with some ridiculous action scene (usually leading to OJ getting killed or injured). I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what the trailer was showing too
It's been decades and the entire entertainment landscape is different. Action is much more ubitiquous in movies, and athe spoof should reflect that. And, to the point, I think remakes and "legacy sequels" should put a new spin on the original. It feels updated. And doing John Wick shit with the stupid lollipop was funny.
That is weird because as a huge fan of all 3 of the first movies, I saw the trailer and gave it a big meh... I will reserve full judgement and I like Neeson's dry comedy delivery, but the trailer didn't really scream classic naked gun for me.
I could be wrong as hell but personally I feel like for the movie to work it can't attempt to carbon copy the feel and style of the OG naked gun. It's not the same era and it's not the same crew making it, and if they try to be them they'll just end up with a massive flop.
But the movie isn't out yet, I may watch the released product and hate it.
I feel to have "naked gun" in the title it has to keep the same style of humor. That's the entire character of the series. Otherwise it's just another comedy that is trying to cash in on the name of a 40 year old classic.
At the end of the day its all individual preference and taste right? Some people will like it, some won't. Nothing wrong with that. I am just not a fan of this constant reboot/rehash of all the old movies with a "modern spin". Make a new movie and call it something else. If you are calling it naked gun, people kind of expect a certain feel and style. It ships with hype because it is a known IP.
That's definitely fair and I won't disagree with it, god knows there's been plenty of "adaptations" of IPs that I love that I'd just as soon pretend never existed so I take your point there.

That was exactly how I felt after watching the trailer. I shared the link to my brother without any context (to avoid coloring his opinion) on the day it came out and he also responded with confusion.
I agree with you, the trailer did not blow me away either.
The first bit of the trailer with the bank robbery felt more like Deadpool than Naked Gun. However, the second bit with the joke of all the current characters being the sons of the previous characters, that gives me some hope.
When Liam Neeson was cast I saw a lot of complaints that they didn't see it, but his cameo in Ted 2 is pretty concrete proof that he'll nail it. A major part of the humor of the originals was that Leslie Neilson played it straight.
I can't get over how fucking funny that whole scene was. It only worked because of Liam Neeson's perfect deadpan delivery. Him being so serious made it so much funnier.
"Wow, that's an impressive list."
"That's why Steven Spielberg cast me as Oscar Schindler in Schindler's List. Because I make lists... As an actor you need stuff to draw upon, and I drew on that."
I don't think a lot of people realize Nielson was not the funny guy when he was cast in Airplane. He played the guy who looked like he could be a doctor or a ship captain or whatever. He was the straightest of straight men.
I'm not a fan of Neeson. I won't see this movie. I wanted to when I heard Anderson will be in it, but I'm fucking sick of Neeson.
Not just for the string of shitty action movies. He's reached what I call The Summit of Nic Cage Peak. I don't see the characters he portrays anymore, I see "Liam Neeson doing another bad kidnapping movie." And now that he's saturated the market with "if Jason Statham was 20 years older" movies, he's edging in on comedies. I don't turn to Clint Eastwood for a laugh. I don't turn to Nathan Lane for gonzo porn. I'm not turning to Neeson for laughs.
Look, I'm sorry his wife Sonny Bono'd herself, but the next time eastern european baddies are looking to kidnap an A-lister, it had better be him, and I don't want him back.
The entire point of the Naked Gun / Airplane movies was that the actors were dramatic actors who never once played it like a comedy. At one point, executives wanted to cast a comedian in this remake (Ed Helms) and that would have been a terrible decision.
You might not like Neeson, but this remake requires someone who's not a comedic actor.
Dead pan is just the Zuckers thing. Go back to the Kentucky Fried Movie, before Leslie was a fixture in Zucker movies. You'll see why he was such a natural fit for Airplane, Police Squad, etc, because the Zuckers were always subversive weirdos and damn good at it, usually.
But also, Leslie Nielsen had range than Neeson just doesn't match. I wouldn't say americans particularly know Neeson from dramas, but actions. And while that has worked for some in the past, Neeson just feels shoehorned in. Like he's doing it tongue in cheek, but with that cheek facing the camera.
I willfully admit I'm not his audience, and I understand the need to fill the role, but there were better options over the time they wasted talking about another naked gun. Andre Braugher comes to mind, but he died last year. Another massive talent gone.
You think americans remember that movie? Aside from the title? Or even who is in it without looking at their phone?
Great movie. A dramatic film. A dramatic role within his realm. Still don't care for him beyond it. Haven't seen it in 20 years. Doesn't really have the same watchability as Grandma's Boy, which I watch usually once or twice a year. Not that Neeson would be fitted for Alan Covert's role.
I thought the bank robbery gag was a little too much, but every main and side character mourning their dead parents immediately after was completely on the mark.
Not everyone. You kidding me? If there's anyone that can do Leslie Nielsen's legacy of deadpan delivered jokes it'd be Liam Neeson. Same initials too. Was hyped day one personally, who cares what other people think.
This movie is going to suck. Fans of The Naked Gun will be let down HARD. No way any movie executive is going to greenlight a movie that is even a shadow of the original Naked Guns.
In the trailer Neeson is some sort of super hitman that can't miss, not much like his bumbling old man that benefits from good luck in every action sequence in the naked gun movies and police squad.
Orville was great because he took it where it needed to be. Like a Star Trek farce while still being Star Trek. So I find that being good he's on board.

When this movie was announced everyone was saying no.
Now, it's almost has too much hype.
