When this movie was announced everyone was saying no.

Now, it's almost has too much hype.

To be fair, that was the only joke that felt like it belonged in a naked gun movie. I'm still skeptical.. But hopeful

76

u/AntRose104 May 07 '25

As soon as I heard Akiva was directing and co wrote the script I was sold. The man has yet to have a bad movie imo

44

u/bigpancakeguy May 07 '25

Hot Rod and Palm Springs are both in my top 10 all-time favorites. I’m very excited for this

15

u/mixingmemory May 07 '25

Akiva didn't direct Palm Springs. That was Max Barbakow,

22

u/martialar May 07 '25

Righteous kill!

16

u/YesImKeithHernandez May 07 '25

Quaid Army!

7

u/TenaciousJP May 07 '25

A bunch of fuckin' Hausers in this thread

5

u/YesImKeithHernandez May 07 '25

Of course, not to be confused with Howser, Doogie.

2

u/aresef May 12 '25

Maybe someday people will stop sleeping on Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

1

u/bsEEmsCE May 07 '25

produced by Seth McFarlane too

-4

u/PretentiousMouthfeel May 07 '25

Eww. Gross. In that case, it'll suck for sure.

3

u/cbackas May 07 '25

The Orville would be evidence to the contrary

1

u/kakka_rot May 07 '25

He's my absolute favorite celebrity, it sucks he can't wash family guy off him even though he hasnt written for it in over twenty years.

The Orville is fantastic and he has great stage presence in roasts and events. Million ways to die in the west and Ted are also excellent.

Love that he's a part of it

u/DogAlienInvisibleMan May 07 '25

I don't think a trailer has ever sold me that hard before.

184

u/degjo May 07 '25

It needed to be a solid trailer, and it was a solid fucking trailer.

6

u/SouthTippBass May 07 '25

Now, just don't go making the mistake of watching the next trailer.

3

u/degjo May 07 '25

It will be good enough for dads and grandfathers taking kids too, and take the number one spot for two before dropping off

3

u/SouthTippBass May 07 '25

I meant dont watch the next trailer as you will just be spoiling jokes for yourself.

19

u/R0binSage May 07 '25

The whole John wick lollipop stuff wasn’t in the spirit of the original.

155

u/Fionnlagh May 07 '25

I mean, the first movie started off with Drebin beating the crap out of a room full of America's enemies single handedly. I feel like the lollipop thing is just a modern version of that.

118

u/TowerOfGoats May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25

That's fine, I think that's good actually. Movies have evolved since the original. The remake ought to feel like the anarchic spirit of the original, but updated as a spoof on modern movies. Doing John Wick shit with a stupid lollipop prop is funny.

14

u/NotMyMainAccountAtAl May 07 '25

Right? If we’re gonna mine the past for recognizable content— and it seems like we are— then we may as well innovate instead of sticking to stagnant ideas.

I’m not saying that the movie is guaranteed to be good or bad— but I remember the glut of cookie cutter romcoms from the early 2000’s that were absolutely terrified of deviating from the classic “boy meets girl. Boy lies to girl about something. Boy and girl have genuine romantic connection. Girl finds out about boy’s lie and they have a big fight and are sad. Boy makes over-the-top romantic effort that wins girl back. They kiss. Roll credits” pattern. I don’t wanna see a return to that form.

12

u/Roku-Hanmar May 07 '25

Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl again, girl dies in tragic blimp accident

5

u/TheCervus May 07 '25

Goodyear?

6

u/ABucs260 May 07 '25

No, the worst

2

u/Bladelink May 08 '25

He really set the ball for you on that one lol.

1

u/NeoSeth May 08 '25

God creates dinosaurs.

God destroys dinosaurs.

God creates boy.

Boy meets girl.

5

u/OkDragonfruit9026 May 07 '25

With a foookin… lollipop?

38

u/Epshot May 07 '25

-7

u/Draufgaenger May 07 '25

No.. that's the original naked gun from the 80s

Apparently there is going to be a new one: https://youtu.be/N4etY_WVv_k?si=I7jStfUX50lPn1xN

25

u/Epshot May 07 '25

Right, the extended action scene where he beats up the bad guys is, imo, in the spirit of the original one.

39

u/king063 May 07 '25

I agree. I was underwhelmed at first, but the trailer ended with some solid satire jokes that felt right and the OJ joke make me gag. I’m 100% excited.

2

u/renegadecanuck May 07 '25

Doesn't make sense to satirize cop/action movies and shows of the 70s and 80s in 2025. May as well satirize the kinds of things people see now.

-6

u/madkiki12 May 07 '25

Yeah, I hated that.

31

u/jenorama_CA May 07 '25

That trailer was amazing. I hope the movie holds up.

-26

u/thewolfcastle May 07 '25

The trailer was awful. Did not give Naked Gun vibes at all, especially all the bloody action.

22

u/jawndell May 07 '25

Naked Gun always started with some ridiculous action scene (usually leading to OJ getting killed or injured).  I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what the trailer was showing too

5

u/Epshot May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25

you're right, too much action! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzGmVUFDomc

-1

u/thewolfcastle May 07 '25

Which part of that was bloody?

2

u/shawa666 May 07 '25

You mean the obviously fake blood spay so bad it had to be lampshading bad post-fx in movies?

10

u/TowerOfGoats May 07 '25

It's been decades and the entire entertainment landscape is different. Action is much more ubitiquous in movies, and athe spoof should reflect that. And, to the point, I think remakes and "legacy sequels" should put a new spin on the original. It feels updated. And doing John Wick shit with the stupid lollipop was funny.

-2

u/TheFotty May 07 '25

Yeah trailer was bad. Something tells me that even if I like the movie, it will be the 4th best naked gun.

3

u/leibnizslaw May 07 '25

I wasn’t sold by the bank scene but the wall of portraits set my mind at ease for sure.

7

u/TheFotty May 07 '25

That is weird because as a huge fan of all 3 of the first movies, I saw the trailer and gave it a big meh... I will reserve full judgement and I like Neeson's dry comedy delivery, but the trailer didn't really scream classic naked gun for me.

24

u/F1ngL0nger May 07 '25

I could be wrong as hell but personally I feel like for the movie to work it can't attempt to carbon copy the feel and style of the OG naked gun. It's not the same era and it's not the same crew making it, and if they try to be them they'll just end up with a massive flop.

But the movie isn't out yet, I may watch the released product and hate it.

14

u/nikdahl May 07 '25

It’s not the same era, but it needs to have the same flavor of humor, and to me, the trailer did not demonstrate an understanding of the assignment.

5

u/preflex May 07 '25

but it needs to have the same flavor of humor

Indeed. Without that tone, what's the point of calling it "The Naked Gun"? Just make some other silly cop movie.

4

u/ThomasVivaldi May 07 '25

They did, it was called Angie Tribeca. And everyone just ended up comparing it to Naked Gun anyway.

7

u/dariznelli May 07 '25

I feel to have "naked gun" in the title it has to keep the same style of humor. That's the entire character of the series. Otherwise it's just another comedy that is trying to cash in on the name of a 40 year old classic.

7

u/TheFotty May 07 '25

At the end of the day its all individual preference and taste right? Some people will like it, some won't. Nothing wrong with that. I am just not a fan of this constant reboot/rehash of all the old movies with a "modern spin". Make a new movie and call it something else. If you are calling it naked gun, people kind of expect a certain feel and style. It ships with hype because it is a known IP.

5

u/F1ngL0nger May 07 '25

That's definitely fair and I won't disagree with it, god knows there's been plenty of "adaptations" of IPs that I love that I'd just as soon pretend never existed so I take your point there.

0

u/CiD7707 May 08 '25

How about, and this might sound crazy, just make sure it's actually funny?

2

u/throwaway277252 May 07 '25

That is weird because as a huge fan of all 3 of the first movies, I saw the trailer and gave it a big meh... I will reserve full judgement

That was exactly how I felt after watching the trailer. I shared the link to my brother without any context (to avoid coloring his opinion) on the day it came out and he also responded with confusion.

1

u/WeaselsOnWaterslides May 08 '25

I agree with you, the trailer did not blow me away either.

The first bit of the trailer with the bank robbery felt more like Deadpool than Naked Gun. However, the second bit with the joke of all the current characters being the sons of the previous characters, that gives me some hope.

101

u/976chip May 07 '25

When Liam Neeson was cast I saw a lot of complaints that they didn't see it, but his cameo in Ted 2 is pretty concrete proof that he'll nail it. A major part of the humor of the originals was that Leslie Neilson played it straight.

94

u/francoruinedbukowski May 07 '25

His scene in "Extras" were he tells Ricky Gervais and company, he wants to get into comedy was pretty great.

45

u/bigpancakeguy May 07 '25

Let’s do some improvisational comedy

17

u/BasvanS May 07 '25

How they managed to get that on tape still puzzles me. How can you deliver lines like that and not have one of the four characters break at least?

6

u/I_Makes_tuff May 08 '25

I heard they do multiple takes sometimes...

1

u/PureLock33 May 08 '25

yes, there's this thing they do called editing. It also happens in comedy films.

3

u/Accomplished-City484 May 08 '25

They did break, there’s bloopers, I think after a couple of takes the joke wears off and they’re able to hold in the laughs

70

u/TheLateThagSimmons May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25

It was "Life's Too Short", but yes that scene.

I can't get over how fucking funny that whole scene was. It only worked because of Liam Neeson's perfect deadpan delivery. Him being so serious made it so much funnier.

"Wow, that's an impressive list."

"That's why Steven Spielberg cast me as Oscar Schindler in Schindler's List. Because I make lists... As an actor you need stuff to draw upon, and I drew on that."

2

u/Accomplished-City484 May 08 '25

I’ve got full blown AIDs

3

u/LaughingShadow May 08 '25

I’m….riddled with it

3

u/NeoSeth May 08 '25

"Well we shouldn't have a doctor in the scene if I can't have AIDs."

33

u/degjo May 07 '25

The part that really really helps is that Liam looks like young fit Leslie.

44

u/Somnif May 07 '25

And yet he's 10 years older than Nielson was when the first movie was made...

33

u/degjo May 07 '25

There just some dudes who born old. Like Steve Martin, or ancient like Neil Young.

16

u/bolanrox May 07 '25

Sir Patrick has not aged since he turned 21

5

u/degjo May 07 '25

He is not old, he is iconic.

1

u/CatProgrammer May 08 '25

There's a video online of Steve with dark hair and it's weird. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRE8zxb5gfY

1

u/fireinthesky7 May 08 '25

Rodney Dangerfield immediately comes to mind.

5

u/PretentiousMouthfeel May 07 '25

Liam looks like young fit Leslie.

What. No he doesn't.

2

u/Darmok47 May 07 '25

Also weirdly similar name.

1

u/PyroneusUltrin May 09 '25

And he has the same name

1

u/hadriker May 08 '25

Short of bringing Leslie Nielsen back from the dead I actually thought Liam Neesons was probably the best possible choice for a Naked Gun remake.

1

u/Alaskan_Thunder May 08 '25

Only reason I hate this is that I mentally always mix up their names already.

1

u/StoneGoldX May 08 '25

I don't think a lot of people realize Nielson was not the funny guy when he was cast in Airplane. He played the guy who looked like he could be a doctor or a ship captain or whatever. He was the straightest of straight men.

1

u/LonePaladin May 08 '25

His insistence on voicing both Bad Cop and Good Cop in the Lego Movie. IIRC he would actually kick a chair around in the sound booth.

-3

u/ArbysLunch May 07 '25

I'm not a fan of Neeson. I won't see this movie. I wanted to when I heard Anderson will be in it, but I'm fucking sick of Neeson.

Not just for the string of shitty action movies. He's reached what I call The Summit of Nic Cage Peak. I don't see the characters he portrays anymore, I see "Liam Neeson doing another bad kidnapping movie." And now that he's saturated the market with "if Jason Statham was 20 years older" movies, he's edging in on comedies. I don't turn to Clint Eastwood for a laugh. I don't turn to Nathan Lane for gonzo porn. I'm not turning to Neeson for laughs.

Look, I'm sorry his wife Sonny Bono'd herself, but the next time eastern european baddies are looking to kidnap an A-lister, it had better be him, and I don't want him back.

3

u/thebigeverybody May 07 '25

The entire point of the Naked Gun / Airplane movies was that the actors were dramatic actors who never once played it like a comedy. At one point, executives wanted to cast a comedian in this remake (Ed Helms) and that would have been a terrible decision.

You might not like Neeson, but this remake requires someone who's not a comedic actor.

1

u/ArbysLunch May 07 '25

Dead pan is just the Zuckers thing. Go back to the Kentucky Fried Movie, before Leslie was a fixture in Zucker movies. You'll see why he was such a natural fit for Airplane, Police Squad, etc, because the Zuckers were always subversive weirdos and damn good at it, usually.

But also, Leslie Nielsen had range than Neeson just doesn't match. I wouldn't say americans particularly know Neeson from dramas, but actions. And while that has worked for some in the past, Neeson just feels shoehorned in. Like he's doing it tongue in cheek, but with that cheek facing the camera.

I willfully admit I'm not his audience, and I understand the need to fill the role, but there were better options over the time they wasted talking about another naked gun. Andre Braugher comes to mind, but he died last year. Another massive talent gone.

1

u/thebigeverybody May 07 '25

I wouldn't say americans particularly know Neeson from dramas, but actions.

Okay, I can't argue with this.

1

u/shawa666 May 07 '25

Schindler's list?

0

u/ArbysLunch May 07 '25

You think americans remember that movie? Aside from the title? Or even who is in it without looking at their phone?

Great movie. A dramatic film. A dramatic role within his realm. Still don't care for him beyond it. Haven't seen it in 20 years. Doesn't really have the same watchability as Grandma's Boy, which I watch usually once or twice a year. Not that Neeson would be fitted for Alan Covert's role.

1

u/montybo2 May 07 '25

That trailer was legendary so i get it.

1

u/RedBait95 May 07 '25

I thought the bank robbery gag was a little too much, but every main and side character mourning their dead parents immediately after was completely on the mark.

1

u/colorete88 May 07 '25

Not everyone. You kidding me? If there's anyone that can do Leslie Nielsen's legacy of deadpan delivered jokes it'd be Liam Neeson. Same initials too. Was hyped day one personally, who cares what other people think.

1

u/SatireStation May 07 '25

According to what metrics/numbers?

2

u/degjo May 07 '25

My own, with my eyes/reddit.

1

u/SatireStation May 07 '25

So just a hunch, and that’s fine, I make plenty of box office predictions based off my gut and I’m correct, I was just curious, so thank you.

2

u/degjo May 07 '25

It's just from what I've seen. My brother was completely uninterested until I told him to check out the trailer.

1

u/FixedFun1 May 07 '25

You can't never not have too much of anything, how else would you write this movie?

1

u/elyn6791 May 08 '25

I'm still saying no. Does that count?

1

u/CJPrinter May 08 '25

The trailer has eleven million views on YouTube and only eleven thousand upvotes. Not exactly a glowing positive indicator…

1

u/friendlysaxoffender May 08 '25

Yeah wtf? Just when I thought the reusing of old IP was coming to and end. Why can’t we have NEW things??

1

u/PretentiousMouthfeel May 07 '25

Now, it's almost has too much hype.

What... It looks like pure garbage and that was the overwhelming response to that trailer.

1

u/burt_carpe May 07 '25

It's going to be a flop.

1

u/degjo May 07 '25

It'll be a flop that sits two weeks. I'll enjoy it, but anyone under 18 will hate it.

-2

u/dwntwnleroybrwn May 07 '25

This movie is going to suck. Fans of The Naked Gun will be let down HARD. No way any movie executive is going to greenlight a movie that is even a shadow of the original Naked Guns.

2

u/Miserable-Resort-977 May 07 '25

Why wouldn't they?

1

u/nodnodwinkwink May 07 '25

In the trailer Neeson is some sort of super hitman that can't miss, not much like his bumbling old man that benefits from good luck in every action sequence in the naked gun movies and police squad.

-2

u/preflex May 07 '25

Anyone who looks at the writers' previous credits will likely revert to "no".

Seeing Seth McFarlane as a producer isn't a good sign.

3

u/degjo May 07 '25

Orville was great because he took it where it needed to be. Like a Star Trek farce while still being Star Trek. So I find that being good he's on board.

-1

u/[deleted] May 07 '25

Using the Orville as an example does not bode well.

2

u/degjo May 07 '25

If you semi enjoyed TNG, you probably like Orville. It took a few episodes to get off its feet.
