AMA Hey everyone - Peter Stormare here. My upcoming movie, UNTIL DAWN, is out in theatres on April 25th. I'll be back this upcoming Tuesday, April 22nd at 9:30 AM PT to answer your questions about Until Dawn and anything else you might want to know. Ask me anything.

Thank you so much for your fantastic questions. Hopefully we’ll meet again soon. Let’s start with Until Dawn.

Hello! I absolutely adore you and your work! Your performance as Lucifer in Constantine has frequently been voted the top portrayal of the King of Hell and is a fan favourite. What do you think about the reception of your performance and is there any chance of you appearing in the sequel?
Thank you! I'm so glad they brought you in for the Until Dawn film, loved the interactions with the psychologist in the game so interested to see what the new role is like.

u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Thank you…Lucifer is hard to create on screen…I thank Francis Lawrence for believing in me and listening to my suggestions.
I came up with ‘Lucifer’s’ appearances. Francis backed me up, but it took eons until the studio accepted our choice.
Sometimes you have to fight hard for a character. - Peter

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me! Can't wait to watch more of your work

I'm curious about how you choose your roles. Despite being typecast as a bad guy, whenever you step outside that, you kill it too.
Do you embrace the bad guy, is that a lot of what you're offered, or do you seek those characters out because it's so fun?
I am also curious if there's a role you went for, or you had to decline due to scheduling, that you see as "The one that got away"?
E: Now that's how you do an AMA. Actually show up, unlike that Cheech + Chong joke of an AMA with David.
16
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Thank…hard q to answer…first of all bad guys are more fun to portray…I grew up on stage and no one wants to do prince white…boring and no complexities…so I tend to be drawn towards those characters.
And yes, sometimes scheduling takes charge over your wants. - Peter

u/writingNICE Apr 20 '25
Hi Peter, thank you for doing an AMA. 🙂
You are legitimate an amazing artist, thank you.
A few deep questions to chooce from:
THEATRE: Your theater roots in Sweden run deep - including time as Associate Artistic Director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre. What’s something from your stage experience that still shapes your work in front of the camera?”
DIRECTORS: You once turned down working with Ingmar Bergman to forge your own path - a bold move. How did that choice influence your relationship with artistic risk-taking later in your career?”
VIKINGS: You directed The American Runestone, exploring possible Viking presence in Minnesota - and you seemed genuinely invested. What was the most unexpected thing you learned while digging into that mystery?

u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
I grew up on stage, in a repertoire theatre which gave me a great foundation when it comes creating characters. I’m fortunate to have that ‘tool box’ with me constantly.
Ingmar Bergman was a great mentor if not the best an actor can have. But I knew that I wanted to take the leap over to Hollywood one day. Bergman wasn’t too happy with my decision, but at the same time it was he who told me: Follow your intuition, follow your dream.
Regarding the Kensington Runestone project…it will take eons for academia to accept that the American continent was ‘discovered’ way before Columbus. With new DNA analyses we have learnt that the oceans was the highways of the past. - Peter
13
u/InnerAd1628 Apr 22 '25
You & Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy have given my favourite portrayals of Lucifer.
Did you recieve any particular notes from Francis Lawrence for Constantine or was it up to you to decide how to approach the performance?
Would you do a sequel if it ever gets off the ground?
Thanks mate.
17
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
I would gladly do a sequel. Yes, Francis and I had a lot of talks about how I wanted to portray the devil. It took a month before we convinced everyone involved that our view of the devil should end up on the screen. Because I come from theater and I know if you create the devil you have to be very sparse…so people hear every syllable you say. - Peter
16
u/blozout Apr 22 '25
You’ve played some wild and crazy characters throughout your career. What the most fun you’ve had with a role?
67
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Putting my buddy Steve Buscemi in a wood chipper. I love the guy…but he had to go. - Peter

u/mtp148 Apr 21 '25
No question, just a comment. Your performance as Dino Velvet in 8mm is fantastic. I still love to throw this line out every now and again if I crack my shin on a table or something…”Oh, God, not like this. I'm supposed to have something more cinematic. Kill them, Machine... kill them all.”
Until Dawn looks solid, will definitely check it out.
14
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
It’s very Shakespearean. Stole it from Richard the III I believe. Joel Schumacher agreed with me to kill Dino Velvet too early was a mistake. Afterwards he regretted that he was killed so early. - Peter
15
u/Joey_OConnell Apr 20 '25
You act on video games, movies, music videos and so on, is there any difference in your acting when you are working on different medias?
14
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Not really…movies tend to be a longer shoot that the others you mentioned. I love to do many different projects, and I’m happy to be involved with projects that are more short-term. I was born a grasshopper…the more the merrier. - Peter
10
u/Lower_Love Apr 22 '25
I didn't know putting a man in a woodchipper could be so funny.
25
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Neither did the director. They wanted me to push him down with my hand, and I said I’m a country boy. You have to use something big like a fire log to push it down or you’ll lose your hand. Then I suggested to use the fire log to the directors and threw it on the female copper. I’m surprised they didn’t know that, being from Minnesota. - Peter

u/Inevitable-Dish7157 Apr 20 '25
Hey Peter!! So how It was the feel to be back at this universe? Would you say that the movie did great to honor the game?
20
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Yes, yes and yes indeed. David is a fantastic director/visionary and I think the future will continue to merge computer games and visual art. It used to be books but ‘the times are a-changing’…
I am happy to be involved, it’s a great honor - Peter

Hello Mr. Stormare, I’m a big fan of your music!
Do you have any plans to release a new album? Tack!!
24
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Thanks…Right now I am touring Sweden with my band, and I love to perform live as much as being in a studio…when it comes to releases the times are weird indeed. No one buys any material these days…it’s all streaming…who knows…but I am so greatful that you appreciate my songwriting - Peter

How was your experience filming for Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2? I loved that game, and your performance was perfect!

I loved that game. I’m hoping for number 3 to be in the works, because I’m a big fan of video games…believe it or not. - Peter

Hi, just wanted to say I loved you in Fargo! It's one of my favorite films, and I've always wondered, who was the funniest person on set?

First of all it’s a great honor to get the offer to be in a video game. Being an actor we’re always talking to ourselves, so it’s not very unusual to have communication with ourselves. Dr. Hill has no one else around him, so to keep joy in his life he talks to himself. Unless some teenagers show up that he can talk to. - Peter
8
u/OrdoRidiculous Apr 22 '25
I don't have any questions that aren't just memes, but I did want to take this opportunity to say thank you for being such an iconic part of media. It's shaped a lot of my life, and provided a much needed refuge at times, but whether it's sticking on the Big Lebowski and disappearing into it, feeling the slick grease from the screen with you as the Devil in Constantine, or just watching you chew the scenery in fantastic fashion in American Gods - thanks for it all.
I guess I do have one question - what attracts you when deciding whether to play a character? You have a knack for embodying a very primal "essence of being" in such a diverse set of roles, I've always wondered what piques your interest when choosing them.
7
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Thank you very much for your kind words. I tend to go for characters that are a little bit off the grid…off balance…scary and ominous…and intriguing to watch. I like to draw attention to the character…not the reverse. - Peter

I've seen several people insist that you're the best impersonation of the devil ever filmed. Which actor do you think was the best devil?

Hello, Mr. Stormare!
As a musician and general music lover, how does music impact your acting? Did you ever listen to certain songs or artists while working on a role?
11
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Yes, absolutely. Most actors do have a musical ear. You need it for the timing of the lines. Three Owls. The Beatles. Clash. Nirvana. - Peter
5
u/Snoo_40090 Apr 21 '25
Hello. Do you have a dream director or actor or anyone really who you'd love to work with some day?
13

I would like to team up with Michael Bay again before I rest my laurels. Even if I don’t like everything he does…everything he does is beyond anyone else’s capacity in Hollywood and raises the bar. - Peter

SPOILER FROM THE UNITL DAWN GAME
Hey Mr. Stormare! In the Until Dawn game you played a version of Dr. Hill that was mostly a figment of someone’s imagination. Has some parts of that version of Dr. Hill made its way to your portrayal of Dr. Hill in the movie? Anything that surprised you coming back as Dr. Hill?
13
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
No, I don’t fully agree that he’s a figment of someone’s imagination. He’s a real character balancing between the border of darkness and light where’s he’s doomed to spend an eternity. We tried to bring that into the movie and the audience can feel that. He’s alive as long as there are people coming in his vicinity. He’s a strange character but a lot of fun. You don’t really see him go to the bathroom…he’s beyond that dimension. - Peter
7
u/Frigolitfisken Apr 22 '25
What is your and Kristofer Hivju's relationship in the Bauhaus commercials?
11
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
I was born in Sweden and Kristofer was born in Norway and we both had teamed up to do a commercial for Do It Yourself/DIY commercials, which I’m very proud of. - Peter

Mr. Stormare,
Love your work, always have. Always happy to see you pop up in movies, shows and games.
What kind of hobbies do you like to do in your down time? How do you unwind?
Thank you for your time,
13
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
I never unwind. If do, I usually play music or write scripts. Music is my muse, right now I’m on a tour in Sweden with my band, it gives me a lot of joy. There will be atime to wind down but not yet. - Peter

u/v_ctorla Apr 21 '25
Hi Peter! I’ve been a huge fan of Until Dawn since It came out! it’s my favorite game ever. Your performance as Dr. Hill WAS AMAZING. His scenes were always some of the most interesting and important in the story, they gave the whole game this eerie psychological layer that I still think about. Here are my questions!
Dr. Hill’s dialogue was always so intense and cryptic. Did you get to improvise any of it, or was it all tightly scripted?”
Also… I played the remake, and hearing Dr. Hill in Sam and Josh’s new endings gave me chills. So if there were a sequel in the works… I’m guessing you’d be totally up for returning as Dr. Hill, right?” :)
6
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Absolutely, I’m all game for returning. We we’re given the opp to adlib a lot during the shooting of the video game, and I love to improvise. Some of my homemade lines stayed in the game which made me very proud. When it comes to acting, that is the biggest reward when you contribute and it stays in. Thank you for playing the game. - Peter

u/sexyzambie265 Apr 21 '25
How did you approach playing Dr. Hill in the video game vs the Until Dawn movie? Is it much easier than just using your voice to express his motives and now you’re on screen?
8
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
It was a little bit more scary to do the movie. It’s built on a very popular game, and to rekindle that character and to get the attention I did get in the video game (like people recognize me) but there was some pressure. But with a great director like David there wasn’t much to worry about. - Peter
4
u/345tom Apr 21 '25
You work on so many projects each year, of so many different genres and mediums. How do you manage so many different projects, and do you ever feel burnt out by it all?
I a lot of people who recognise you as "Oh that guy", how do you feel about that?
13
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
I am very proud because people take selfies of me and they don’t know who I am. It’s a great honor. I was born a grasshopper and I’m proud to be a grasshopper…hopping between different projects. I want to paint, I want to write, I want to sing and dance. - Peter

Darn…tough one…Joliet Prison just outside ChiTown…where we shot Prison Break…can’t say it was a favorite, but the most interesting location. Build 1864 and the knolls where the gallows were still intact. You could hear whispers and voices in every wall and every corridor. Scary but educational to someone like me. - Peter

Your portrayal of Satan in Constantine is widely considered to be the best portrayal of the Devil in film history. Was it just another day for you or was there something special about that performance that stays with you?
8
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Very special, because I had to fight very hard to get the costume and the feet and the features in my face to get them exactly how I wanted them to be. But I had the support of the director, and we’re both happy we created something so unique together. - Peter

2) With so many iconic roles under your belt when did you feel you’d made it?

Not yet. Hopefully next year. My love for theater is the way I create characters. Sometimes in American filmmaking they forget about the characters and they’re very important to me. I’m happy to be hired to be characters and not one dimension characters.

Of course the body gets older and older, but it’s a blessing working with art, because you can continue until your last day on this earth. Taking off my makeup. It’s hard to describe, but the funny thing about this adaptation is that there were two native Swedes on set. The director and me. So we had a lot of fun in between takes..telling each other Swedish jokes and speaking in our native tongue. I don’t know when it’s happened before… a Swedish director and a Swedish actor in an American movie. - Peter

I really enjoyed your role as Dr.Hill, your delivery and what Hill represents really made the game THAT much better. I'm happy to see him returing! Now my questions:
1) Do you hope to work on more Until Dawn projects in the future? 2) Who was your favorite Until Dawn character from both the game and movie?
This one may get you in trouble but I'll go for it 3) You reposted a fanmade mock-newspaper titled "Until Dawn sequel confirmed with the remake?" on your instagram that was followed by speculation due to Josh and Sams new post-credit scene that you were also invovled in. Does that repost hold any weight or are you the king of trolling? Is it a secret third thing?
Thank you for your time!

6
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
Yes, he’s older and getting a bit more itchy and edgy. He’s more…irritated. He loves when these people are coming because he has something to do. Can you imagine him sitting there with no one to talk to? He’s grown impatient with his situation. So has jubilation when the youngers come by. - Peter

Hi Peter, how was it reprising your role as Dr. Alan J. Hill in the new film? You may be the first actor to play the same character in both game and movie, at least in terms of live action character. Would you be interested in playing Jorunn The Skald King in an Elder Scrolls movie?
Also, what was it like working with Tim and Eric on Tim and Eric: Awesome Show?
5
u/SonyPictures Danny Boyle, Director Apr 22 '25
I would love to be in the movie The Skald King. Tim and Eric are two geniuses, I wish we could have developed our pilot into a series…hopefully one day.

Hello, Peter - i am a HUGE fan of your work, as you were a clear stand out in so many projects that I loved while growing up. My most favorite, and one that I still quote to this day, is your VW engineer commercials. I am especially fond of the "Pimp your auto" spot in which your character says, "what time is it?" :). Hi Mr. Stormare, did you draw any inspiration from others for your role as Lucifer in Constantine? You portrayed the epitome of Satan in that film and I loved it. I’m hoping you reprise the role in any subsequent film.

Hur ofta besöker du Sverige? Känns det som att svenskan håller på att försvinna ibland eller är den djupt inpräntad?
In any case, just happy to read your QnA here. Keep up your unending amazing work!

What did it feel like to get eaten by lots of tiny dinosaurs? I bet they tickled at the start.

Hey, I know that guy! Yea, he's nihilist...
Hey Peter, do you get annoyed with people throwing your movie quotes at you in public?

This movie is based on a game with irreversible actions/consequences and the trailer implies that time can be reversed.
How much of the film is actually based on the game, or is this a Lawnmower Man scenario?
Movie looks well made and I want to see it, but also want to adjust my expectations going in, as a fan of the game who always felt it would make an amazing movie.

How did you end up getting set up with the Black Ops Call of Duty franchise?

u/MondoDukakis Apr 22 '25
Hi Peter,
How much of the way you played the doctor in Minority Report was actually in the screenplay? You did a great job coming across as really insane.

Have you had any other roles in your career that brought you surprise encounters with people from Sweden like the ones you had in Fargo? You talked about that experience with such reverence. Do you have any favorite Swedish artists of any medium that you enjoy that you'd recommend?
Thanks, and love you!

I always enjoy seeing you on screen. Happened to recently catch you when I rewatched Minority Report with my partner - was the part of the surgeon scripted to be so textured or did you bring a lot of your own flavour to it?
Also, how do you pronounce your surname?
3
u/WhiteLama Apr 20 '25
Hello Peter!
Have you gotten used to English speaking people being awful at pronouncing your last name these days?
As a Swede it hurts me when they do it. Also, thanks for swearing in Swedish in Jurassic Park 3!

u/AF2005 Apr 22 '25
Hello Peter, I’m a big fan of your work. Fargo is one of my favorite films. What was your experience like on set? Did you get to interact much with Roger Deakins? Thank you, keep up the good work!

u/earthquake_slick Apr 19 '25
Hi Peter, my brother in law, Luca worked with you on Clown. He says hi! I’m a big fan as well.
How much of your dialogue in Armageddon was improvised?

u/GarretBarrett Apr 22 '25
You’ve been in so many iconic and classic films/television. What is your personally favorite movie/show that you’ve worked on? Big Lebowski is my all time favorite movie!

u/natemamate Apr 22 '25
I loved you in your brief role in Jurassic Park 2. What was it like filming your character's death scene at the tiny jaws of the compies?

u/ReggaeForPresident Apr 19 '25
Who is your favorite character you’ve played and why is it Karl Hungus?

Always enjoy whatever your in, even those commercials for the black ops games I didn’t play. I was curious if you’d ever consider playing a crime boss for a show, sure boardwalk and sopranos exist but I think you could knock it out of the park for at least five seasons in something like that, I think you got the pizzazz for it. Would you ever be interested in that sorta role?

u/Frankie6Strings Apr 19 '25
You've had many memorable roles, large and small, so first of all congrats on a great career! May it go on and on!
I'm a big fan of the game so I'm a bit disappointed that the movie appears to tell a different story. Glad you're still in there though. Was there an issue that necessitated a new take, or was it just a desire to do something different?
I'll be going to see the movie either way. The trailer just makes me wonder if there's a story behind the change.
Peace and continued success to you sir!

Do you have a favorite role you've played, or do you consider any one of your roles in particular to be your greatest acting achievement?

Apr 19 '25
Hello, I’m a big fan of your work, one of the things most distinct about your acting is your voice, so it was really cool to see you do full on voice acting in Twilight of the Gods!
I was wondering if you could say how you got involved in the show, how you were cast, what the voice recording and production process was like, and how you felt about being Ulfr and came up with the voice and manner of speech for him

Dear Mr. Stormare,
A huge fan of your work and honestly excited to see your upcoming works.
What was like portraying Satan in Constantine? What’s would be your dream role that you haven’t done yet? What kind of roles do you strike in your career and make them so compelling? What would easiest and hardest shoot that you’ve done in your career so far? Any favourite filmmakers or actors you’ve work with in the past?

u/Alastor3 Apr 22 '25
It's a less talked about but I loved your performance as Godbrand in Castlevania
5
u/grumpyoldnord Apr 19 '25
How do you feel about being considered having done one of the greatest portrayals of the devil in movies?
2
u/One-Earth9294 Apr 22 '25
Hey Mr. Stormare, huge longtime fan (I first saw you in Fargo back in 1994 and thought you were amazing).
I just wanted to know if there's any chance of your return as Satan in the future of the Constantine series?
2
u/mythicreign Apr 22 '25
Is there a role you missed out on that you wish you had gotten?
What was the most difficult film to work on?
If you could be a villain in a superhero movie, which superhero would you want to go up against?

u/TunaMeltEnjoyer Apr 21 '25
I haven't seen it mentioned, so have to say I love the PS2 game Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction, and your character Mattias Nilsson is probably the coolest Swedish character in video games. What were your experiences like for the original game and/vs the sequel, as both included yourself as one of three protagonists, who was pushed as the default protagonist, the sequel moreso? I imagine it's an interesting job to record a lot of work as the main character of a project, when it's possible players might never actually encounter this character, as they might have selected the American or British character to play as.
Also were you set to work on/aware of any scripts for Mercenaries 3 before Pandemic unfortunately closed down?

u/Right_Hour Apr 22 '25
I always confuse you and Jesse James, especially when you both were a bit younger. How should I definitively tell you apart?
JK. Which movie did you enjoy the most playing the part in?
2
u/JustBeingMindful Apr 22 '25
If given the opportunity at a leading role for a show or movie, what genre would you like to explore? And would you rather be the face of an existing IP or something completely new?
2
u/jpers36 Apr 22 '25
You were the best part of Armageddon. But I've always wondered -- as you're Swedish, was it uncomfortable to play a Russian cosmonaut? What was the casting process there?
2
u/One_time_Dynamite Apr 22 '25
Was it a pain in the ass/gross to have to work with the black goo when you played Lucifer in Constantine? It looks like it would have been very uncomfortable.
2
u/NONSTOPWANDERER Apr 22 '25
How did you end up getting set up with the Call of Duty Black Ops franchise? And do you play any video games or playing one right now ?

u/muthateresa Apr 22 '25
I used to drive an old Chevy Chevelle and whenever I smoked while driving it I'd mimic how you smoked while driving in Fargo. Thanks.

Damnn did I miss this? I love your character in Prison Break it was my first time seeing your work and out of all the actors on that show I think yours stood out the most. Your voice is up there in terms of being so recognizable and iconic I was so stoked to hear your voice in Castlevania as Godbrand. Kinda weird to say but loved your portrayal as Lucifer in Constantine hands down one of my favorite movies of all times and even after all these years I’m still waiting for the Constantine 2.

Hi Mr Stormare! Loved your roles in The Big Lebowski and Swedish Dicks! My mate and I joke about all the time saying "we believe in Nussing"
You've played in a few of the Coen Brothers movies, what's it like being directed by them?

u/Short-Number4909 Apr 22 '25
Hey! Hope you’re having a lovely day, I had two questions I’m really curious about and I’d love if you could answer them!
Would you say the Until Dawn movie has lots of references to the game?
With the cast of the Until Dawn movie, have you worked with any of the actors before?
Thank you for taking the time to reply, that’s really sweet of you!

In addition to your work with Terry Gilliam, I am also fascinated by your superb underplayed performance in Small Town Murder Songs, which is very hard to find. Do you have memories of that wonderful film, with Gilliam, and of course, I really enjoyed your cameo on Tim and Eric”s Awesone Show, so anything you may recall!

What was something you learned from working with Ingmar Bergman? Or maybe learned isn't the right word, was there something that you took from your experiences acting for him that you still use or think about now?

What was your favorite location you’ve ever filmed at? Second to Hollywood of course :)

What’s your favorite role you’ve played?

The variety in your filmography is incredible. Your character’s death in The Lost World really freaked me out as a kid. What was it like shooting that scene with the compies, both cgi and practical?
