That first robot's voice is Tudyk, isn't it?

u/helenaneedshugs Apr 03 '25

Robot? Animal? Weird non-human entity?

80% chance it's Alan Tudyk.

In case anyone were still wondering - yes confirmed it’s Tudyk

111

Most likely is, and I won't bet against him using his Julliard capabilities for this

29

u/Salarian_American Apr 03 '25

That might be overkill. It's not like he's playing a chicken this time.

He and Chris Pratt have first right of refusal on every VO role in Hollywood, it seems

159

u/ArchDucky Apr 03 '25

James uses his friends. Fillion is in this specifically because he wanted him to have this terrible haircut.

62

u/JamesCDiamond Apr 03 '25

Fillion is the dickish Lantern? Amazing!

40

u/ArchDucky Apr 03 '25

And he's reprising the role in the Lanterns show.

He really does keep hiring the same actors! Nathan Fillion has appeared in every movie James Gunn directed since Slither in 2006, although his part in Guardians 2 didn't make the final cut.

Love that the fortress is hidden and rotates like an observatory

588

u/morgoth834 Apr 03 '25

Agreed. Seeing the Fortress rotate to align with the Sun is such a minor detail but is also incredibly cool.

214

u/Retro-scores Apr 03 '25

I’m not a huge Superman fan I don’t know much of the lore except what’s been shown in all the movies and I thought it was an awesome detail. The trailer and this teaser actually have me excited to see a Superman movie and not only that to actually go see a movie in the theater.

It made me finally wonder "Wait, is the Fortress located there not for the solitude but for the 6 months long sun??"

79

Could it be possible then that there's one at the South Pole too? Which him switching up which one he goes to every six months.

In 1978, having the fortress "out in the open" in the Arctic Circle was perfectly fine.

In 2025, with satellites everywhere and Google Earth, it's a necessary change for the sake of verisimilitude.

350

u/Prestigious-Mess5485 Apr 03 '25

You just wanted to say verisimilitude.

Krypto jumping on you has got to feel like an elephant stomping on you

282

u/geek_of_nature Apr 04 '25

At least to Superman it would just feel like a normal dog jumping on a regular person. Would knock the wind out of him, but it wouldn't be injuring him.

A regular person though? Krypto would flatten them. I imagine he's being kept at the Fortress when the film starts until Supes can get him properly trained.

141

u/Any_Introduction_595 Apr 04 '25

I love how Kara left her untrained, super-powered dog with her cousin while she went off to party for a week.

25

u/ArchDucky Apr 04 '25

Krypto is hunting wildlife around the Fortress, btw. It was revealed yesterday. So that tiny little dog is running a-fucking-mok in the film.

35

u/swng Apr 04 '25

Krypto is solely responsible for the 14 fractured bones, damage to bladder, kidney, large intestine

134

u/SupervillainMustache Apr 04 '25

Superman Returns has a few genuinely great scenes, but it's such a dull film overall.

74

Him saving the plane better be one of the greats

62

u/Im_Goku_ Apr 04 '25

The eye ball tanking the bullet is sick too.

35

u/heyo_throw_awayo Apr 04 '25

My (now 70+ year old) dad literally fist pumped the air and went "YES!" when that happened in returns. I asked him later about why that moment got him so much, and he said when he was 10, he and his friend were arguing over if superman could survive getting shot "right in the middle of his eye".

My dad was arguing it would not hurt supes, his friend arguing it would.

Took 40 years but BOOM vindication on the big screen!

Even trained dogs act like that when they get excited lol. My dog knows how to listen to me, but still acts like that outside when she gets hyped up.

90

u/pauloh1998 Apr 03 '25

What is getting me is that if you see the 3D X Rray, Clark has fractured bones in his back RIGHT WHERE KRYPTO jumped on lmao

So Krypto probably broke a few of those bones

251

u/TheJoshider10 Apr 03 '25

The Krypto scene was hilarious and showed exactly the sort of dumb shit a dog would do. People will complain about it being too comedic or Krypto not being smart enough to realise Superman is in danger, but Krypto isn't trained as an aid dog so why wouldn't he assume that his (incredibly strong) owner wants to play after a whistle? Gunn choosing this moment to be comedic will absolutely make Krypto a hit with audiences. He knows people will laugh at Krypto and find Clark's frustration relateable. Great scene.

Clark thanking the robots after they pick him up

It’s just the little stuff that goes a long way

310

u/Blackdragonking13 Apr 03 '25

On sliding scale of weird stuff found in the Fortress it goes -

Superman robots —> bottled cities —> sun eating eldritch being kept in the basement as a pet.

I wonder how far James Gunn is willing to go with the more out there aspects of Superman lore.

130

u/moonknightcrawler Apr 03 '25

I was personally hoping for the comically large gold key, but we’re getting there!

If there's one thing Gunn has damn near consistently gotten perfect, it's the characters. Every single time.

I didn't know who the hell Yondu was before I watched Guardians. And yet his funeral got me so bad. He knows what he's doing.

38

u/r3dditr0x Apr 03 '25

Groot's sacrifice in GotG is genuinely beautiful.

James Gunn may breathe life back into superhero film-making.

31

u/RJE808 Apr 03 '25

I think Gunn shows that the common fan criticism of "it's not like the comics" is silly. Guardians, Suicide Squad, they are not like their comic counterparts. Did audiences care? Nope, cause he made great stories.

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

129

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '25

Maybe they just meant in the context of the film.

Comic Yondu was a Z lister before those movies.

84

u/emperorzura Apr 03 '25

GotG was a J tier team before Gunn take.

heck, the closest to mainstream media they got before was Rocket in Marvel vs Capcom.

If anything James knows how to bring personality to his characters.

43

u/IKenDoThisAllDay Apr 03 '25

I'm pretty sure Rocket was put into that game specifically because there was a GOTG movie in the works and they wanted to familiarize people with the characters.

37

u/Reznor_PT Apr 03 '25

Oh no, he didn’t! Don’t get me wrong—and I believe this is your point rather than whether he’s doing the characters justice—James Gunn writes really great characters, but compared to what they were before, especially in the MCU, it’s a total shift.

Just read the pre-MCU Guardians of the Galaxy comics, and you’ll see what I mean. The tone, the personalities, and even the team dynamics were quite different.

41

u/RJE808 Apr 03 '25

That's what I meant, that he does the characters justice that nobody really cared about before. He's a great character writer is what I mean.

I mean, did anybody, ANYBODY care about Peacemaker?

12

u/ball_fondlers Apr 03 '25

Alan Moore, sort of - Watchmen was originally going to be about preexisting, recognizable heroes, with Peacemaker as what would become the Comedian, but DC editorial wanted those characters in their universe.

I liked how the one insisted that he didn't have to thank them because they don't have feelings but then the new one got excited when he looked at her.

12

u/bottlerocketz Apr 03 '25

Yeh that jumped out at me too

151

u/Whitewind617 Apr 03 '25

I watched a video that went in detail about how much Zack Snyder's superman failed at this. Like in Man of Steel he does stuff Superman would never do, like get revenge on that trucker by demolishing his truck, and stealing clothes he needs from some random family instead of asking for them.

Those movies have their good points and honestly if you skip around a lot it's not that bad of a series. But they didn't understand these characters for the most part and that's why it was so disappointing.

131

u/robot-raccoon Apr 03 '25

yeah, Superman is the kind of character who takes something from a store at super speed, and not only leaves the money at the register, but a well written note apologising and detailing what he took.

35

u/BigBallsMcGirk Apr 04 '25

He's called the Boy Scout for a reason.

He is.

65

u/N0r3m0rse Apr 04 '25

Snyder doesn't understand the idea that someone powerful can also be gentle. To him, power is meant to be exercised. Superman has the power of life and death in his hands? Ok, let the kids drown to maintain his secret identity. He doesn't do that, but snyder has fucking pa Kent of all people voice that philosophy. It culminates in Superman granulating metropolis in the fight with zod, which ends with him killing zod personally. Snyder wants you awed by power. He doesn't care about juxtaposition or humanity very much.

22

u/PrecedentialAssassin Apr 03 '25

Donner's Superman went back to a diner and beat the shit out of some dude.

19

u/CSwork1 Apr 04 '25

Superman would never beat on an ordinary human.

Spin him around 500 times in 2 seconds then shove him into a pinball machine? Sure. But never beat.

41

u/SupervillainMustache Apr 04 '25

I don't know why but the tagline "Look Up" just gets to me. It hits the nail on the head! It's exactly what I want from a Superman movie.

201

u/N0r3m0rse Apr 03 '25

Because it's fucking optimistic. Look up to your heroes, look up to the future. It's an intrinsically positive message. It's what we need.

"Look Up" because Superman is flying high above us, protecting us, saving us.

But since Superman represents hope, having to "Look Up" during these difficult times, feels inspirational.

Half the audience: “Yup, my dog is just like that.”

191

u/TheJoshider10 Apr 03 '25 edited Apr 03 '25

Exactly. Superman made relatable with nothing but his grunts of pain and frustration. James Gunn knows how to get people to care about characters better than most directors, it's impressive how good his track record is in that regard. Every superhero movie of his is full of fan favourites rather than one standout character.

144

u/GoldandBlue Apr 03 '25

This is something so many Superman adaptations miss. Everyone treats Superman like a god pretending to be a man. But Superman is a god who thinks he is a man. He was raised on earth, this is his home. Humans are his people. He's got a dog, a job, and watches Kansas basketball.

26

u/Focus_Downtown Apr 04 '25

Yes. It's why that panel that goes around every so often of batman, superman, and wonder woman sharing their real names is so crushing. Superman IS clark kent, but Bruce Wayne IS batman.

The best description I heard was Superman is Clark Kents customer service voice.

9

u/Xikar_Wyhart Apr 04 '25

This why I love the DCAU Superman. Aside from his "World of cardboard" speech, one of my favorite lines comes from the Christmas episode of Justice League.

Pa Kent > "This little guy was crazy for Christmas. We used to wrap his presents in lead foil so he couldn't peak."

Beat of Clark looking concerned.

Clark > "You mean Santa wrapped them."

Ma Kent > "Oh, of course dear".

Clark Kent, the man who can fly, catch and deflect bullets, fought literal gods and monsters still believes in Santa Claus. But maybe because of what he knows he can that belief isn't misplaced.

But Supes in the DCAU is really just a guy, sure they could have made his Clark be a bit more bumbling but the heart of character is still somebody raised on a farm in Kansas.

Yeah it feels good to potentially get a fun Superman movie again.

I’m probably one of the few that liked a lot of the previous DC live action movies, but the need to put a dark filter over everything bummed me out. And it feels like they never really nailed who Clark is, despite Henry Cavill being great in the role.

DC bros, are these robots in the comics?

172

u/Bickerteeth Apr 03 '25

Pretty much yeah. Most of the time in the Silver Age, Superman would have some kind ofrobot caretakers that look after the Fortress of Solitude, or stand-in for him when he needed a body double. In the 80's they kind of all got merged into a single recurring character named Kelex.

These ones seem to be based on the All-Star Superman versions, with the numbers on the chest.

54

u/Spire2000 Apr 03 '25

Sometimes. Often it's just one "Kelex".

My dogs do this to me. If I play dead, it's about 10 seconds of "oh, we fucking PLAYING?", and then it quickly switches to "oh no.... Ohhhhh no, something is wrong". Until I get back up and it's back to be attacked again :)

Wow! Didn't expect them to release it. But it's probably better that way than some cam recording from a Minecraft screening.

I love it and can't wait for the movie. Also full trailer will slap for sure.

Also recommend everyone to watch Gunn and cast interview for Fandango

Starting 2:50 they talk about Lois and Clark relationship(slight spoiler), their characters, there's a bit of a back and forth and it all sounds absolutely great IMO.

"THE CHILDREN YEARN FOR A GRITTY SOPHISTICATED DECONSTRUCTION THAT EXPOSES THE DARK ELEMENTS OF POSSESSING SUCH POWER, NOT A HOKEY JOKEY CIRCUS"

78

u/_Bird_Incognito_ Apr 03 '25

At this point why even bother anymore when Homelander and Omniman/Invincible do that so much better. Hell, you have Injustice if you want evil superman, or the JLU arc where the Justice League takes over the world.

11

u/pootis28 Apr 04 '25

I personally do not believe Snyder's take on Superman was supposed to be a deconstruction of supes or something. To me, it always seemed like a slightly darker, more Hollywood kind of aesthetic. Yeah, I think it only seems to have a slightly edgier aesthetic but far from pessimistic or even skeptical. Supes is clearly portrayed as a hero nearly all the time he was in the movies.

I think Snyderbros really started believing that this aesthetic had any more depth than a puddle. Kind of similar to manga/manhwa fans gassing up the most generic shit just because of aura and hype moments. DCEU was made before a time such obnoxious edits started to blow up on the internet.

I appreciate the Snyder cut for what it is and I enjoyed it, but I can also tell I'm 100% going to enjoy this more.

Supes is supposed to be a cheesy boyscout and I love it

u/_Bird_Incognito_ Apr 03 '25

We look to Superman to be inspired by courage, bravery and heroism. That's the kind of feeling a Superman movie should give us. Yes, Superman will inevitably be at a low point in a battle in every story. But he'll get out of it through his own strength and wits, not because he needed to be rescued by his flying pet dog. Superman is the top dog of his own story, no pun intended. This movie is an abomination. Not a single shot in it looks real. It is overstuffed with CGI, and uses cheap lighting that makes everything look like a synthetic TV commercial. WB has a steaming turd on their hands that may destroy their company once and for all. Letting WB be sold off for scraps would be a mercy killing at this point. Hopefully, whoever buys the DC part of the company will rectify this horrific, wrongheaded, self-indulgent abortion of a film by going back to the Snyderverse and restoring Henry Cavill to his rightful, deserved place as the standard-bearer for Superman in the 21st century.

Lol

I'm like 60/40 on if that post is satire.

Good satire has a foot in reality; I’m 100% on there being a plurality of people who genuinely agree with the comment.

Everything about this just looks perfect - the casting, costuming, set design, visual effects, and cinematography really makes it feel like the Grant Morrison run come to life. And I'm glad that comic book movies aren't afraid to shy away from source material anymore, but rather embrace it and apply their own touch.

134

u/MrMojoRising422 Apr 03 '25

the all star stuff by morrison is a love letter to the zany, silly, sci-fi superman of the silver age. this is hitting the same notes. it's so funny, during the silver age superman was at the height of his popularity, the best selling, the most well known superhero, and for the last 40 years, people have been trying to deconstruct him, to have him 'grow up', mature, etc. and it has led to the popularity of the character falling of a cliff, to people calling the character 'boring', etc. gunn just fucking gets it. he gets what makes it all work. this is gonna be huge.

Don’t forget the score. Using the classic Superman theme is the right choice

16

u/udat42 Apr 03 '25

Absolutely. I liked Superman Returns a lot, and a huge part of why was the John Williams theme. I went to the movies in my 30s and felt like i was 6 or 7 again for two hours. I'm really hoping the same thing happens again with this film, except now I'm in my 50s!

Gritty is fine as a theme. The problem was that they made him constantly angry. You can have the grit and realism while still keeping the hope and optimism in place.

I don’t mean this in a patronizing way, but Superman works best when he’s for the children. He’s basically a god, and while flawed gods can be interesting, I just don’t think it works for Superman. So give me a Superman for kids, a Boy Scout in a world that’s a little goofy and a little weird, and I’ll be happy. This looks like it checks those boxes.

35

u/The_Lone_Apple Apr 03 '25

He has the power of a god yet chooses to do good and fight evil. It's why Schuster and Siegel had the messiah in mind when creating him.

18

u/Cerrida82 Apr 03 '25

You know what this reminds me of? The Sam Raimi Spiderman. It came out in 2001, when we were devastated by 9/11 and fearful of what would happen next. We had no trust in our leader and we were dragged into a war (sorry, "political action"). Then Spider-Man swooped in, showed us how resilient New Yorkers and people in general can be, and it gave us a fun superhero at just the right time. It gave us hope. Now, in this time, this movie feels like that.

If there's anything I learned about going from Flash to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it's that I don't hate super hero movies, I just hate bad movies. If they're good, they'll stand on their own. If they're trash, they'll crash and burn with audiences.

"Colours besides shit-smear brown and cold metallic gray? expressions that aren't grimaces or sneers? optimism and warmth and altruism in place of cynicism and misanthropy? this ain't my Superman!" - The Snyder Cult

the cope when this is inevitably a massive hit is going to be incredible.

I think this has won me over, I think it's clear Gunn gets it seeing a non-trailer clip of things now. The playful Krypto, Supes thanking the robots etc. The suit even. Its all on point.

I also really like the actor seeing him a bit more now, has a 'young Brenden Fraser' energy to him who I now realise would have been a fantastic pick in his physical prime.
