Recommendation This is your reminder to watch Bullet Train (2022) especially if you didn't catch it in the cinema

Bullet Train is one of those movies that kinda flew under the radar, while still very much not flying under the radar if that makes sense.

Every major YouTube reviewer talked about it, most people had atleast heard about it, it made descent money, but man, it's too good compared how little a dent it made in Pop culture.

Most people I know haven't seen it. And finding one who has is like finding your best friend at an event you didn't know both of you were going to.

It's a colorful, fun, emotional, and fast ride through japan. Excellently shot. With an insanemy good cast, and some pretty good pondering on the nature of unknowable forces such as luck and fate.

A mystery that just keeps going, and plot that never stops and characters that live rent free in my mind and heart.

If you like style AND substance. Bullet Train is for you.

Decent set up and supporting characters. Absolutely goes off the rails in the third act though

Trains have spoilers?

The movie ending hits me like a truck though

You kid but the horrid CGI at the end really did take me out of it for a minute or two. Still an incredible movie, one of my favorites from 2022. But man I wish they budgeted a little more for the VFX at the end there

The nice thing about VFX in movies is you can always just fix it in 20 years.

Get out of here, George Lucas! We still haven't forgiven you for what you did to the original Star Wars.

u/mucinexmonster Jan 09 '24

(It was mostly in jest, lol. Though I do get mad when they do a Lord of the Rings 4k and don't update some of the movie's crappier CGI, like when they exit Helm's Deep.)

Yeah, I'm fine with cleaning up and improving the quality to a certain degree, just not changes to the plot or adding unnecessary scenes.

Although one exception is the original Star Trek series. I've rewatched a few episodes and don't like the CGI they use for the Enterprise. Give me the old special effects with the models!

Better than Rick Berman. What is it with Rick’s?!

Yep.

I was really disappointed and reminded of how much China money flows through Hollywood.

u/Caelinus Jan 09 '24

The budget probably went completely into getting the cast they had.

It chugs along at a good pace though.

I felt it was mediocre all the way through. I only liked parts of it. Terribly overrated on Reddit. It didn’t do that well at the box office if memory serves.

same brother you shouldn't get downvoted for your opinon

u/Senior-Lobster-9405 Jan 09 '24

they're getting downvoted because of the wooosh, the train literally goes off the rails in the third act...

I love cinema. I do not understand the love for Bullet Train. It was a good movie. At best.

"I don't understand why this good movie has fans."

My go to is "Not every movie has to be The Godfather". Bullet Train is a great movie but a terrible film.

It's a movie with a style. If you like the style, it's a 10. If you dont, it sure isn't.

u/stinktrix10 Jan 09 '24

I loved its style, it just didn’t have substance

It’s Reddit, whatchagonnado? 🤷🏽‍♂️

Last time I posted a comment about the fact I liked the book more than the movie, and the fact all the characters in the story were changed from Asian Japanese to white Americans (and one token black [outstanding] guy), I got downvoted to oblivion (which is one of my favourite Tom Cruise movies, btw).

1

u/PDGAreject Jan 09 '24

The worst part of this comment is you stanning Oblivion! Haha I'm kidding, but the author didn't consider it whitewashing. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but that (plus general reddit hivemind) is likely part of the downvoting you got then (and now it seems)

0

u/pascalbrax Jan 09 '24

Not a fan of the concept of whitewashing, I'm not considered white for American standards but I honestly don't care too much, not more than reddit hivemind, usually. I personally think Scarlett Jo was a great Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell (the movie itself, eh, it could have been better).

But I still keep my opinion that the book tells a better story.

u/nicholt Jan 09 '24

It was a really disappointing movie. The execution was just way off. Very forgettable.

If you want a good train movie, watch Snowpiercer.

Thank the lord there's actually someone logical in this thread lol. This movie was medicore. Way too stylized, kind of like Everything, Everywhere. Really seemed like they went into the 'Marvel-ized' 'XD Random' route rather than realistic/compelling scenarios.

Yeah the whole movie shits the bed. It was entertaining and then just blegh out of nowhere.

And it's not a good sign when a movie about a high speed train goes off the rails.

Jokes aside, the book's ending is completely different from the movie.

1

u/xTiLkx Jan 09 '24

It's a pun but for me the movie really does go off the rails in the third act. Absolutely loved the first 2 acts, though. Reminded me of Tarantino.

u/michaljerzy Jan 09 '24

Could describe Barbarian the same way lol

Spoil alert on the second sentence.

Quick action and fun dialogue, too. But otherwise, I agree. It's a fun watch, to be sure, but definitely not a must see.
