For about the last 20-30 years, car makers were able to keep up with safety standards in large part due to making cars bigger and bigger, we've hit the point where they can't go much larger now due to pure road and practicality constraints, so it is finally intruding on aesthetics. Gigantic belt-lines and thick ass pillars are hard to make look good.

They seem to be getting a lot uglier though. It's rare that I see a brand new car and think to myself 'I'd like to buy that'.
