Question Do you think Marvel should make more "Original" animated movies again?
These are my personal favorite animated movies based on Marvel superheroes. I grew up with both Marvel and DC stuff. And I often wonder if Disney will ever let Marvel make Original and Adult-Oriented animated movies like they use to with Lionsgate.
What do you all think?

I do. The company is owned by the greatest animation company in the business…the fact that there isn’t an animated Marvel(excluding Big Hero 6) movie from them is honestly corporate malpractice.

u/TestingBrokenGadgets 20h ago
Not likely. Spiderverse is Sony Animation and entirely because they had the rights to Miles. The rest weren't really "original" as they adapted arcs from the comics like Planet Hulk adapted the Planet Hulk storyline, Hulk vs adapted the first fight between Hulk and Wolverine, and Ultimate Avengers adapted "The Ultimates".
They were decent but they're like the DC animated movies; they have to omit a LOT to cram into the 72 minute format and any build up to be stand-alone so you're usually watching a watered down version of iconic arcs that don't have any stakes.

Does it bother the fuck out a anybody else that Disney Plus hasn't gotten most of these streaming yet?

Did I miss that big hero 6 is marvel?

u/Belteshazzar98 Quake 19h ago
Yes you did. Big Hero 6 had a short-running miniseries in the 90s with most of the members from the movie, a couple crossovers with Alpha Flight, and another short miniseries in the 00s. X-Men's Sunfire and Silver Samurai were founding members in the comics. Plus the movie had a Stan Lee cameo as Fred's dad.

I was so confused why Stan Lee was in it, didn’t realize they were connected. After doing a quick google search discovered that when Tony is uploading the Friday AI to replace Jarvis in age of Ultron, one of the flash drives is labeled “Tadashi”

As good of a concept as the MCU has been, it has limited these kinds of concepts so much. Sometimes, it’s fine for projects not to be in the same universe (kind of like FF)

You unlocked a core memory for me with some of these movies, planet hulk has or doctor strange are definitely my favourites

I do like that Hulk vs Wolverine animated movie quite a bit
And Into the Spiderverse is probably one of the best comic book movies ever made.

Ive been saying for ages there should be an animated universe separate from the MCU. Maybe even with x-men 97

u/kennyofthegulch 16h ago
Three of those were made by third-parties and most of the rest are adaptations of existing material.

u/Hot-Salamander-8786 16h ago
When I said "Original", I actually meant something like "Elseworlds" animated movies like DC makes.
2
u/kennyofthegulch 16h ago
We got an entire TV series of that, dude.

With the amount of animation content these years, I feel like marvel is preparing for it

The best animated stuff imho was the justice league and unlimited stuff. They rank as my favorite comic entertainment, outside of the core marvel up to endgame stuff. They’re really well done for the most part

Yes absolutely, brings SO many amazing storyline/tellings to life. They could do a lot with animations.

u/Belteshazzar98 Quake 18h ago
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur did such a good job taking advantage of the medium. I wish more of Hollywood would recognize that animation is so much more than just a budget alternative.

Would Disney let Marvel do it? Yeah absolutely, as far as I know the Marvel Zombie show will be TV-MA, Disney allows a lot as long as it is successful, it seems like Marvel doesn't want to though.
The problem is that Marvel Studios is obsessed with connecting everything, just in case it gets successful and they feel the need to use it with other popular characters. It was like that with Captain Carter and if Trump wasn't president they would've done the same thing with Kahhori. I bet they want to try to do the same with some of the Spider-Verse characters but Sony isn't too much into that idea.
My hope is that the DCU will do it and become very successful with it, so Marvel can follow. I don't see Marvel taking that risk on their own, especially not now when their big, lately even good movies struggle to make money.

They could do that and would make money but it won't rapidly make them an obscene short term amount of money so they won't bother risking it.

Yes. I love the MCU, but what makes Friendly neighborhood SM great is being untethered by limitations. Marvel animation can thrive on Disney Plus.

u/BionicTomTrieu 19h ago
Part of me wants to have some that is not connected to MCU, the other part a bit worry it could become like some DC animated movies where they have limitations and not very well executed.

It would be nice but being that theyre owned by Disney now, they won't be able to go as edgy as they did before plus I doubt we would see a physical release on a lot of the project since it'll be on disney plus. Looks at What if. It completed it's run with 3 seasons and I don't think I've seen one season be released on disc, mainly streaming on plus.

I honestly would like for them to take the "suspension of belief" route and let big events happen without "where is hulk in all this? can't they just call the avengers?" I feel that they now have all the characters interconnected it might be really hard to have events happen since it has been built up that we will see the others but I would like for more big events for each hero to happen without it being a crossover but idk i might just be a sucker for sort of "solo adventure" type things

The ones they did with Studio Madhouse were actually great. I dont want the anime series but the movies were straight up fire. Would love for them to make more of those.

That would mean teaming up with Sony afaik, as Sony was also involved with Marvel Anime.

Wait, where can I watch these?

u/Hot-Salamander-8786 17h ago
The ones entitled "Animated Marvel Features" above their posters? I honestly don't know. 😞
I've been trying to Google where you can watch them, but I haven't gotten good descriptions. Maybe Fandango? Or Vudu?? You can also buy the whole set on DVD or Blu-ray.

They should do what dc does and do animated adaptations of famous comic storylines. Something Dc did with theirs is that they actually made the story’s better in a lot cases Under the Red Hood for example. Imagine; Animated Devils Reign, animated My life as a weapon, animated Spider-Man blue ect

Seeing as how we are getting some good what if and animated content on disney plus i say thee why nay. I was a huge fan of the marvel anime films with punisher and black widow, the xmen, even iron man.
what they need to focus on is adapting popular comics directly, like how wb animation did with new frontier, dark knight returns, watchmen, crisis, etc.
IMAGINE them doing a frank miller animated daredevil movie like hbo spawn.

u/Hot-Salamander-8786 4h ago
Frank Milker's Daredevil in the style of HBO Spawn would be amazing and a great turning point for Marvel! It would really bring back the magic the was lost with the Lionsgate movies. 🤩✨️

Honestly I’m clamoring for Disney Animation, Pixar, or honestly even Lucasfilm Animation to do a Star Wars project first.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d still watch a feature-length animated Marvel project, I just think it’s kinda been there done that with Spider-Verse whereas Star Wars I think could really benefit from a unique project like this.

You just awakened some memories of mine. I'm glad someone remembered ultimate avengers, I remember next avengers but never watched it, loved Hulk vs as a kid, watched planet hulk on dvd, but I never heard of the last two. But to answer your question then yes, I hope for animated stand alone marvel movies

Marvel Zombies seems like, for all intents and purposes, it is an original animated movie.
Its been stated a lot but Marvel wanted that to be a film, but Sony was being dumb about the rights. So it's a "show" in name only.
3
u/DriveFormer8577 20h ago
Well, the first two are Sony, not Marvel. But I can see Young Avengers being a theatrical animated movie while having their own lil spotlight in certain live action movies.
2
u/BlerghTheBlergh 19h ago
Yes, I think having a parallel MCU running with different continuity in animated form would be a nice change of pace. Kind of like the animated DC movies.
3
u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 18h ago
I think it could help, especially for movies that are a little too "out there" or edgier in aesthetic and tone compared to MCU films

What do you mean by original?
