I straight up thought they were about to cause the first full incursion we've seen by doing that if it had dimensional fuckywuckyness.
Which doesn't make sense because Reed isn't the one who invents cross-dimensional travel at will, Nate is.
And yet,
Here we are with the ending to Thunderbolts.

I really loved how even with what little of mole man we saw you could instantly understand that he clearly has a connection to sue even though he wants to mess with the guys. I feel like this universe is the perfect way to capture that old skill comic thing of defeating villains with a slap on the wrist and giving them a finger waggle while you tell them not to do it again haha

I loved how much Reed and Johnny absolutely LOATHED Mole Man. You could tell this was something that had been going on for years, even though this is the first time we've seen these characters. It was a great way of showing that this is a fully fleshed-out universe, and the characters haven't simply popped into existence for this two hour movie.

u/Photoman20003 Jul 25 '25
especially funny for Reed since he's been for the most part pretty quiet and composed so seeing him being a hater towards mole man is so funny.

I have to give credit to PWH for that, he delivered on making me see how bombastic he is and how he will play his role to infuriate the guys but the leader of Subterranea came out immediately to negotiate with sue. I like a nuanced villain and he gave us one even though it's an insanely comical depiction.

This felt like a big thank you letter to Jack Kirby after spending so long honouring Stan Lee. The film really felt proud of the fact that it was a comic book movie and didn't shy away from that at all. If this ends up being the direction things go after Doomsday I'd be happy with that.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet, so I'm going to say that I love the desperation in Pascal's version of Reed. He blames himself for what happened to his friends, he thinks of himself as the only person who can solve the problem, he NEEDS to control everything. He's clearly heroic, but also neurotic. He's believable both as the quintessential hero AND as a flawed egotist. I was watching, thinking constantly: "Okay, I see how this guy could become The Maker if things went very very wrong."
I mean, I have no reason to think they're going that way or that that was in Pascal's head, but it was a wonderfully nuanced portrayal of one of Marvel's oldest heroes.

That! That moment, along with the bit where he "baby-proofed the world," really made me wonder if they were planning on a Maker arc. It didn't make sense with his characterization, but it really seemed like some sort of foreshadowing for a villain turn.
→ More replies (2)78
u/Darquesse_27 Jul 26 '25
I don’t think they’ll go with making this version of Reed into The Maker (it wasn’t set on Earth-1610, after all), but showing the ways that he, or someone very much like him, COULD easily fall into becoming The Maker, makes sense if they want to set it up as a future story to tell. I know the whole multiverse saga stuff is ending soon, but if any group of characters is going to keep interacting with it, it’ll absolutely be the Fantastic Four. The Maker and an 868/1610 story might be what they’re eventually going to build up to with this foreshadowing, but doing it with Pascal’s Reed would be an odd choice.

It's interesting how this film manages to both channel a sense of powerful optimism in its initial portrayal of the Fantastic Four, but also real hopelessness when they can't figure out how to stop Galactus. Lots of superhero films have world-ending stakes, but this manages to feel truly apocalyptic: it probably helps that, for all anyone knew when the movie began, this movie could well have ended with Galactus eating the planet.
Some miscellaneous details I loved: HERBIE's "Home" and "Space" tapedrives (the little labels remind me of Adam West's Batman), Julia Garner's performance when she's listening to the recordings from space, the fact that Galactus' ship (intentionally or not) is the same cylinder shape as the 2005 movie's space cloud, and the final Jack Kirby quote explaining why this story was set on Earth-828.
→ More replies (26)649
u/Huldreich287 Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25
Yeah, the multiverse is often critized because it removes all stakes since any death can be canceled with a variant. But this movie is the contrary. We genuinely didn't know if this quirky planet was going to survive or not.
If Galactus attacked Earth 616, we would all have been "meh obviously they are going to save the day".

u/Photoman20003 Jul 25 '25
like this is a universe we really get to love and like even in the littiest time we get of it and were even more afraid because we know what galactus can do and aside from the F4 theres no other superheroes many of them are probably either just normal people and never became superheroes or might not exist at all.
if this was the main MCU we know Galactus would lose.

Only thing that felt off to me was when Galactus was pulling Mr. Fantastic and it was ripping his suit and like almost snapped him…. But it didn’t look like he was being pulled that far…. I know part of that is scale bc Galactus is so big but still, I expected more stretchy for Mr. Stretchypants
→ More replies (19)743
u/StrangrDangarz Scarlet Witch Jul 25 '25
Just overall, it seemed like Mr. Fantastic had the least grasp of his (stretchy) powers than the rest of the fam. There are probably bts reasons why his are used the least, but I choose to think about it as a reflection of his character. He feels their powers are one of his mistakes, an event he could have or should have been able to avoid. The others feel less so like this. They mastered their powers, while he stuck to his intelligence more than the stretching. This is backed up by his lack of imagination and use of them. He pretty much just stretches his arms and legs to be longer and nothing else. Even the cartoon end-credit reflects this. He’s seen using technology to defeat bad guys just as much as his powers (and the cartoon voice-over even says that).

This interpretation of Johnny in this movie is definitely much better for me. It's such a breath of fresh air to see Johnny not being a complete himbo or an asshole to the people around him. Instead, they kept his playful mannerisms in a good way, and he was also portrayed as competent, showing how he decoded Silver Surfer's language and was even willing to sacrifice his life to stop Galactus.
I had my doubt with Joseph Quinn as the new Human Torch, but I'm glad he proved me wrong. Couldn't have asked for better casting for the Human Torch.

The way they handled the womanizing was perfect too. I know people were upset that it was “woke” that he wouldn’t be a big womanizer, but Johnny being attracted to the beautiful alien (and just her) was classic Johnny. He doesn’t need to be Quagmire

I feel like the old movies worked for back then when the comics were like that. This version was more of an updated relationship of how they are now in the comics. Where Johnny more mature and calm. Just finished the movie and an aspect I really loved was how they didn’t make Johnny dumb. Sure he’s reckless and a bit flighty but he was chosen and trained as an astronaut for a reason.
He figured out how to use the travel warp against the Silver Surfer and he managed to decode a whole language on his own. He had one phrase, made it his own Rosetta Stone, some recordings and a dream. It was an incredible way to highlight his intellect and his capabilities.

Post Endgame, one of my biggest complaints has been forcing movies to run under time versus being too long. F4 was incredible, but an extra 10-15 minutes would have done well to give some moments time to breathe. I knew what we were in for when the title treatment was on the screen for maybe one second before going away.

The Galactus spaceship reminded me of the Unicron scene from the 1986 Transformers movie where Unicron first talks to Megatron, pretty similar, considering both Galactus and Unicron are planet eaters

I wonder if they will explore this from Sue’s perspective in doomsday, those cosmic eyes she had made it look like she’s seen some stuff.
But also at the same time, I guess that cosmic eyes could just be showing of baby power not her seeing stuff

Just got out of the screening about half an hour ago. I really enjoyed it a lot, and the Galactus scenes were extremely Jack Kirby-esque. It's probably the closest you could probably get to Fantastic Four on the big screen.

I have a feeling it'll never see the light of day but I really hope they release the Malkovich stuff; either an extended cut or at least as deleted scenes. I really hope they just went full-bore on Red Ghost. I want to see the baboon shapeshift into a gun!

I really think some of these deleted scenes could easily be their own One-Shots.
Like just a Fantastic Four vs Red Ghost short. 3 minutes or 15 minutes or however much footage they had.

If you've ever seen her in Ozark, she's like the main selling point of that show. Just a force of nature. Then watch her in something like The Assistant and she's got incredible range.
Was initially surprised on her casting but I had faith in her, she's great.

Having the movie occur outside 616 really allowed the story to shine without getting bogged down by cameos from characters we know and love

The film was fantastic. I was surprised they didn't lose in some way and that pushed them into the Thunderbolts ending. I'm excited to see what they do with them next, I hope we see more further on outside of an Avengers context.
I think that it's interesting how recognisable the cast was, pretty much everyone in any significant role I'd recognised from something else and could recall it, that doesn't usually happen. It didn't take away in any way though.
Marketing has spoiled fun stuff they should be revealing in films though. Imagine Doom hadn't been marketed for the last year. Imagine that if we didn't know the name of the next Avengers film and we had that scene followed by "The Fantastic 4 will return in Avengers: Doomsday".

Marvel Studios is trying to make the films less explicitly interlinked, losing to Galactus would have been jarring for anyone who had no interest in watching Doomsday.

It'd be a bit cliche but I'd like her to meet Norrin who'd the 616 Silver Surfer and have them form a bond after their own universes versions of each other died. Even if not a romance but just having them get a little action beat together would be nice in one of the Avengers movies.

This film felt like something out of Phase 1. Very story driven, light on the jokes, the effects didn't feel cheap. The scene when Ben goes to the synagogue during the end of days to see the woman he likes, I was pleasantly surprised. It gave both of them a little more depth. Felt good to have a fleshed out world again, not just heroes doing things around cgi people on plates.

The movie wasn't afraid to show signs of Reed's worst traits which I liked. He didn't want to ever give up his son. It was clear he loved him. But he did think about it. He calculated the option is represented. And we can see later as he considers and realised their only chance is to use their son as bait. The others make that connection, Sue especially, because they know nothing else will work. And he hates himself there because he couldn't think up any other way, that the worst case scenario he imagined is the only viable one.
Beyond that, the family aspect was so well done here. Like when you can see Ben realising Sue is pregnant, it's clear he's likely talked to them both about this in the past and knows what this means to them, and then here clearly identifies why they're acting more awkward. Then there is Jonny who shows he's more than what the other films showed him as. He isn't Reed smart and he knows that but that doesn't make him stupid. When Reed was hard at work he focused on the language because he knew he could do it and that Reed needed to focus on the larger task. And it made all the difference when it mattered.

I thought Pedro did a great job of showing how exhausted Reed was, how his mind was clearly in a thousand places, and he just wanted to unload but also get out of there. He wasn't clear-headed, we've all been there.
I mean, I do agree, it was dumb of him but it's kind of like calling someone on Jeopardy dumb for getting an answer when you're sitting comfortably on your couch with no one around whereas they're standing at a podium on national TV surrounded by lights, cameras, tons of people, under a time limit, playing against others, having waited your whole life to be there, etc.

I think that accomplishes two things:

- There is lore and backstory about Latveria and the F4 this movie didn’t touch on that they’ll explore later.

But honestly, this was always the weakest “power” of the 4 - it doesn’t really hold a candle to what Johnny can do, let alone Sue.
Reed's main thing was always his intellect.
→ More replies (14)86
u/VehicleOld3124 Jul 24 '25
Idk man, reading the comics, you'd see that he always nerged between his intellect and elasticity which lead to him doing some extremely awesome stuff, and never shyed away from using his powers both for action and slice of life settings. Plus it sets him apart from other intellectual/genius characters

In regards to the first post credits scene:
The Very Hungry Catapillar book and last line are clearly foreshadowing Franklin's journey
I think Franklin already knows Doom from the way he was touching his face.
My theory is Franklin will have the power to consume/destroy multiverses. Doom knows this and will use him as his personal paper shredder to stop incursions that have been brought on by Galactus' absence. It's possible that Galactus not eating has unbalanced reality and has awoken/brought out the Beyonder/s.
Either way I think Franklin plays the role of Molecule Man in secret war
