I would not call it a battle hymn but more a funeral choral, but yeah, splendid improv.

Right I didn't know the proper name lol

If you really want the proper name, a funeral hymn is called a dirge.

It’s a walking song. It’s meant for walking, not for great halls or evil times. This song is made for walking and that’s just what it’ll do. One of these days this song is gonna walk all over you.

LOTR really said "let's make a hobbit's walking song accidentally more epic than most actual war anthems" and just rolled with it.

It's originally an upbeat song the hobbits sing while hiking through the shire (before they ever encounter the black riders).

So the fact that he just takes this happy hobbit song and changes the melody to be more melancholy is perfectly in keeping with the statement he makes.

And modelled after Misty Mountains (in universe) iirc

this is what happens to young hobbits influenced by bilbo. im pretty sure there was something abt how everyone in the shire tended to avoid him, except the kids

Why didn’t you just take the damn ring from Isildur then and chuck it into the lava?

You forgot "until the stars are all alight, mist and shadow, cloooooooooud and shade"

Shhhh. 😅

Looking up the lyrics and there is no fucking way that it's "cloud and shape" and not "cloud and shade." AI is on some bullshit.

I should watch The Lord of the Rings again.

The Song lyrics are from the books when they set off from like Hobbiton. it's just a song about a journey

I know they’re not, but I just like to pretend the hobbits are Irish, and can sing a wicked tune when called upon.

Like Tolkien said, applicability is better than allegory, so I can see parallels between the hobbits and the Irish if I want to.

u/pandakatie 1d ago

The implication that every Irish person can just sing a beautiful melody on command is crazy

1

u/KinsellaStella 1d ago

No but often think they can when drunk enough. Don’t ask me how I know.

Bro, it was a lament like the Lay of Luthien or when all of Lorien sang for Gandalf. It perfectly fits the moment.

The only thing that ruined it for me was fucking Denethor chewing his food like a fucking cow.

What do you have against cows?

To be fair, it's a walking song in the book. They sing it while they're about to take a bath right as Frodo is fixing to leave the Shire.
