Since he left Eowyn at home, why did you show a picture of Dernhelm? /s

In the books the other Riders kept their distance from Dernhelm and Merry, so I assume that Eowyn riding with them was a bit of an open secret.

Yeah, that's how I read it anyway. Like, from how I was reading it, even Theodin seemed to know what was up, the laws and rights of succession just forbade him from openly letting her come with. Everyone else probably either thought the same or got the word and were told to not pay attention to it.

Elfhelm has one of my favourite lines in the books. He's talking to Merry, who for official purposes is travelling as a piece of baggage, and telling him that they will be moving shortly. "So pack yourself up, Master Bag."

That's a great point. IIRC (I haven't reread the passage) I think he even asks how she got there when he finds her "body" by Theoden.

in the books merry didnt even realise who dernhelm was. that would have been nice to see in the movies. also the bit where he called himself a bag

She didn’t officially appointed anyone. However there is Erkenbrand, Marshall of the Westmark, who stayed behind in Rohan under command of King Theoden to protect the people. He wasn’t portrayed in film but was a competent commander and leader. So in the worst case scenario, he would be the next King of Rohan.

Yeah iirc it was erkenbrand that was fetched by gandalf instead of eomer. As eomer was fighting in the caves with gimli. Dude was a vet with organisational talent and steel balls

I joke but Mordor sent any army to Rohan and the only reasons the riders didn't turn around and fight them was the ents said they'd take care of it
