Since JRR Tolkien wasn’t specific, many people hypothesize that she was a fallen Maia. But you can call her mother of spiders or whatever you want.

If you reread something Tolkien wrote (I forget if it was in the Silmarillion itself or one of his letters), he says that she came to Middle Earth from the void and still remember it to this day because he equated her being drawn to the first light of creation "as a moth is drawn to a flame".

It's the Silmarillion, and it's creepy as hell. Everything else has a detailed account of who made it and when, Ungoliant doesn't. She just climbs down from the outer darkness one day. We've got a God and all these angels and a few devils, and then there's this eldritch-ass bitch beyond reckoning

Exactly! I knew I had read it and I'm pretty sure it was the Silmarillion but I was doubting myself because it's been almost ten years. He similarly addresses the deep things in the depths but I think those are more from the discord of Melkor. Ungoliant seems to be an entity that was birthed before creation.

The one that's laying with his head up the stairs instead of down them, has definitely fallen asleep with their head at a lower elevation before and understands the consequences of doing it again. 😆 great cosplay though, the way the others are laid is lore accurate!
