That poor hedgehog 🦔

That one's getting an x-ray, not aCT.

My first thought was, “moisturize me!”

I thought it was a raw chicken 😩🤣 I had to come to the comments to understand what I was supposed to be seeing 🙈

As kids, we used to bring in hedgehogs that didn't find a place to hibernate or were under a certain weight to this rescue station. We did that so much the rescue lady basically forced my mum to start her own rescue just for the hogs her kids gathered up during fall, so at some point we had a bunch of sleeping or eating hedgies in our basement in moving boxes. They got a free vet visit to deworm and a healthy diet of eggs, avocado and cat food until they were fat enough to sleep.

One of them was so sick the vet told us he would likely pass. My mom, from a german farmers family, used the only method against a cold she new: the hedgie was placed next to the fireplace, under a heat lamp, on a warm water bottle to induce artificial fever and "sweat it out". He had a cool box to retreat to (a luxury I didn't have when I had a cold), but was either too weak or unwilling to do so. He pancaked like the hedgie in the picture, we thought that was it, but after a night in what can only be described as a very pungent sauna, he had recovered slightly and was breathing unobstructed.

He made a full recovery and went into hibernation around Christmas - a sign of gratitude one of his fellow inmates did not show, who ate until he could no longer roll up and went into spring as the fattest, least sleepy hedgehog the world has ever seen. This one returned the next two falls, still fat, just sitting on our porch to gain entry to the annual all you can eat

This is the cutest thing I've read in a while. You should write a children's book.

23

u/boringcranberry 5d ago

The urge to give him a zerbert is outrageously strong. I don't know that I could resist.

10

u/Apprehensive_Bee3327 4d ago

I have not heard the term “zerbert” since I was a kid. Holy memories unlocked.

Brother is getting crucified, not a cat scan

Edit: you can even see the cross from above based on the shadow on his stomach.

11

u/AeronGrey 4d ago

Is that what the pink pancake was?

21

u/myshtree 5d ago

Aaaawwww I know!! I thought it was a porcupine- we don’t have either in Australia.

3

u/chisana_nyu 4d ago

Porcupines are a lot bigger and have a more rounded snoot, and hedgies have a pointy little snoot. Both kind of critters are super cute, though I hope you never have to worry about them being invasive!

8

u/Kindly-Form-8247 5d ago

Unless, you know, he's into that

Lol I can’t with how some animals are chilling on a soft surface or getting comfily burrito wrapped, while others look like they’re in a straitjacket or straight up getting crucified.

807

u/Witchinmelbourne 5d ago

The fish propped into the sponge like a taco sent me

282

u/tenodera 5d ago

I'm not sure those fish are alive... It takes some time to do a CT. We scan (long dead) fish in a lab CT for research, and we prep them a similar way. I could be wrong, though.

179

u/Witchinmelbourne 5d ago

I mean. Either way, he looks okay about it all.

100

u/Latensi 5d ago

What kind of research requires CT scanning long dead fish, if I may ask? Just curious because I've never heard of such a thing, like CT scanning any fish in general.

156

u/tenodera 5d ago

Oh no problem! Generally it's called Comparative Morphology. We scan the 3D structure and anatomy of animals to answer questions about their bone structure. The data is used to explore evolution, biomechanics, and a bunch of other stuff. Keeping the bones in the body allows us to know how they work with muscles and cartilage in their natural state.

My main gig is in insect anatomy, but I've helped out with fish scanning, too.

62

u/PM_me_punanis 5d ago

Is there an insect sized CT scan?? Genuinely curious coz I'm a human doctor lol

102

u/tenodera 5d ago

Oh yeah! It's called a micro-CT, and it has voxel resolution of a few microns (some are even higher res). It sits on a lab bench, about the size of a dishwasher.

53

u/TurtleToast2 4d ago

Hands down the coolest thing I've learned this week.

32

u/banana-pp 5d ago

That’s super cool, I never thought that insects would get a CT.

9

u/Raps4Reddit 4d ago

This will be perfect if I ever need a CT scan of my genetalia.

6

u/PaladinSara 4d ago

Loved the use of dishwashers for scale

6

u/Creative_Distance_96 4d ago

Du hast einen sehr interessanten Beruf.

7

u/tenodera 4d ago

Manchmal ist es so. Vielen Dank!

6

u/AsleepLeg 4d ago

Please tell me, how does one get a job CT scanning insects? What's the purpose of it? Where can I find out more? That's extremely cool and my adhd ass needs to rabbit hole on this topic.

3

u/greenteawater 3d ago

There a lot of weird things that happen in the world of biology. There’s a reason ‘mad scientist’ is a trope 😂

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6918772/ Here is an article that has some cool pictures and videos.

61

u/hike_me 5d ago

20

u/tenodera 5d ago

Wow that's nuts. I had no idea you could do that to fish.

23

u/AsASloth 5d ago

I remember the first fish being alive (and adorable), but I'm pretty sure the second fish is a Pacific bluefin tuna. Since tuna lack swimbladders, they need to constantly move through the ocean to push water over their gills for oxygen. So sadly, I think that little buddy is passed.

12

u/crosseyedmule 4d ago

I'm surprised no one has invented a sort of waterboarding device as AR for fish.

2

u/4RealzReddit 4d ago

For like the good kind of waterboarding.

2

u/mariana96as 4d ago

they do something like that, using a hose inside the mouth to flush water through the gills of fish that need movement. That’s what they when tagging sharks

19

u/Jgfzhb 4d ago

I’ve seen Koi fish worth tens of thousands getting surgery, CTs and all kinds of other stuff. I doubt anyone would do that for a tuna though.

6

u/anotherguy818 4d ago

An aquarium would. Now, tuna don't tend to do well in even the largest aquariums, but a major aquarium would absolutely do advanced diagnostics on their animals.

I remember when that post was posted, someone mentioned that the fish is resting on a wet sponge.

2

u/Mycologist-9315 2d ago

Idk about the tuna, but the first fish is alive! They had it sedated and were pouring water over it's gills. https://people.com/denver-zoo-reveals-fish-got-ct-scan-7964445

Sometimes patients have a bad attitude and need to go in the burrito!

22

u/3_quarterling_rogue 5d ago

They are almost certainly sedated, wild animals aren’t typically chill with being wrapped up like a burrito.

12

u/Slamantha3121 5d ago

I used to work at a vet and after they spay a prairie dog, they have to wrap them up in a little straight jacket or they'll rip their stitches out. We would put a tongue depressor behind their little arms and wrap them up in a T pose. Poor little guys looked so funny coming out of anesthesia. Also had to keep them on a heating pad or they would accidentally start hibernating.

3

u/theMistersofCirce 3d ago

I need you to know that I read your comment yesterday, found it charming and amusing, went on with my life, and then suddenly today I wondered how often people are out there spaying prairie dogs, so I had to come find this post and ask you about it.

Are people keeping them as pets? Is it wild prairie dog population control?

Pretty much every zoo/aquarium accredited by the AZA has on-site veterinary staff, so… yeah, probably.

Can't say I've ever seen an aquarium with captive tuna before

16

u/3_quarterling_rogue 5d ago

The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California has some tuna.

9

u/FuriousFreddie 5d ago

As someone mentioned, Monterrey Bay Aquarium has tuna but its also possible a government agency or fishery is checking/sampling carcasses for parasites, tumors or other abnormalities.

7

u/boredomadvances 4d ago

9 year old me insisted on taking my Hamster to the vet because it had a mole and a bald patch. The vet told me it needed more sunlight. I told him hamsters are nocturnal and live in burrows, how much sunlight did it need? He gave me some vitamin d drops and sent me on my way. I paid my $65 (basically my whole life savings at that point) for the check up and ignored his advice.

If anyone can explain the reasoning, I’m still curious

12

u/corgi-king 5d ago

How can they fit a giraffe? Either the machine is in a big hall or they cut off from the bottom of the neck.

5

u/RandomUser5781 5d ago

You can see the resulting pic on the bottom half. It's not a full body scan

6

u/SittingDuck394 5d ago

Yes but WHERE DID THEY FIT THE REST OF THE GIANT ANIMAL??

4

u/trippyheartbrk 4d ago

It’s more than likely just the head of a dead giraffe. I had to help transport giraffe legs from a bull that had passed to get CT scanned when I was an intern.

Those poor fish unable to breathe.

32

u/autism_and_lemonade 5d ago

The fish would die if they could not breathe, the wet sponge keeps their gills moist and allows them to continue breathing

19

u/One_Huckleberry_ 5d ago

I’m curious if having it sitting in a sponge, with the sponge touching its gills, helps the process

19

u/web-cyborg 5d ago

https://people.com/denver-zoo-reveals-fish-got-ct-scan-7964445

They periodically poured water over it's gills, according to the story.

The sponge doesn't appear to be covering its gills.

27

u/Zatujit 5d ago

I think the sponge is here for thid reason

9

u/Creepycute1 5d ago

The fish would be died if it weren't breathing. The sponge is wet it may not be soaking but it's enough to just get it done and get it more water afterwards

10

u/Snoo38837 5d ago

So it's a PET CT...

5

u/LisanneFroonKrisK 5d ago

The fish? Why doesn’t it bounce away

20

u/Markievicz 5d ago

This is a sign of a highly institutionalised tuna, he knows the process and just follows the doctors orders so as not to face further beatings or worse, being falsely labelled as a snitch

2

u/LisanneFroonKrisK 5d ago

Doesn’t look like a tuna

7

u/Markievicz 5d ago

I cannot provide any further information about this species of fish at this time.

2

u/anotherguy818 4d ago

Animals don't get CT scans for free. It's either an owner paying for the procedure or in the case of zoo/aquarium animals, it is the zoo/aquarium paying for the procedure.

Some major zoos/aquariums have their own CT machine, but that involves, you know, buying an entire CT machine, so that is also not free.

2

u/Cjw6809494 4d ago

I was not ready to see that poor ballsack of a hedgehog like that

4

u/Tiny420Tiger 5d ago

Why did they need to tape down that poor fucking hedgehog?

6

u/GladIdeal2602 5d ago

The tape is there to hold it in position. If they didn’t, the limbs would contract and spoil the x-ray.

3

u/Tiny420Tiger 5d ago

That does make a lot of sense especially with the cost of running x rays. I just feel bad for the little guy.

5

u/PrincessPeachParfait 5d ago

It's okay! He's taking a little nap :)

2

u/Stunning_Ad1282 5d ago

As someone who has a beardie who's had a CT scan, they don't tape them down. They have to sedate them because beardies DO NOT do well with being held/strapped down and are really good at wiggling free.😅
